Viser crashed into the empty concrete, her momentum carrying her forward. "How is that possible?" she choked out, looking around wildly. "No human is that fast!"

"Up here."

Viser snapped her head upward.

I was at the apex of my jump, suspended in the air right above her blind spot. I flipped the Dwarven Sword into a reverse grip, letting gravity and my monstrous Strength stat do the work.

I dropped down, driving the golden blade straight down through her spine and out her stomach, pinning her entirely to the warehouse floor.

Viser gasped, a horrific wet sound escaping her lips. Her eyes rolled back, her beast legs twitching once, twice, before she went completely limp.

I let out a breath, planting my boot on her back, and wrenched the sword free. I didn't say a word. I just flicked the blood off the blade, stepped off the corpse, and started walking toward the warehouse exit. Kiba and Koneko immediately moved in to secure the body and ensure she was actually dead.

I saw Rias open her mouth to call out to me, her eyes wide with a mix of shock and awe, but I completely ignored her and kept walking. Let them clean up the mess.

...

I sat outside in the cool night air for a good five minutes, leaning against the trunk of an old tree. I had a rag out, methodically wiping down the golden metal of my Dwarven Sword, just enjoying the quiet.

Eventually, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse creaked open, and the Gremory peerage filed out.

Isa practically sprinted over to me.

"Shiro! That was amazing!" Isa cheered, her eyes practically shining. "How did you pull that off? You didn't even need our help!"

I just offered a small, modest smile, though I could feel the incredibly intense stares boring into the side of my head from the rest of the peerage.

Rias stepped forward, her arms crossed beneath her chest. The arrogant, composed heiress from the clubroom was gone, replaced by someone who was genuinely trying to figure a puzzle out.

"That was certainly quite a show," Rias said, her cyan eyes scanning me up and down. "Who was your teacher, Shiro?"

I slid the rag back into my pocket. "Would you believe me if I told you I learned all my magic by reading books?"

Rias let out a soft, elegant snort, shaking her head in complete disbelief. I just smiled. Well, I suppose today was at least a little bit interesting.

"Who forged your sword?"

I looked over. Kiba had stepped closer, her eyes entirely fixated on the golden blade resting against my hip. As a Knight obsessed with holy and demonic swords, it made sense she would pick up on it.

"It doesn't look like any Holy weapon I've ever seen," Kiba continued, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. "And yet... the metal was emitting an incredibly unusual magical energy. It isn't demonic, either."

I knew exactly what it was, a standard Skyrim enchantment that I could eventually replicate myself once my [Smithing]and [Enchanting] skills were high enough. But explaining Tamrielic crafting mechanics to a Devil was a headache I didn't want to deal with right now.

"It was a gift," I said simply. "From a friend."

I could see Kiba physically holding back a dozen more questions about the metallurgy and balance of the blade, but Rias held up a hand, stopping her Knight from pressing the issue.

Rias stepped closer, the moonlight catching her crimson hair. She had her own question for me.

"How were you able to take down a Stray Devil like that?" Rias pressed, stepping closer to me.

I just shrugged, sliding my sword back into my inventory. The golden blade vanished into thin air. "What are you talking about? You saw the whole thing. What part was confusing?"

Rias frowned, clearly not approving of my tone. "That's not what I meant, Shiro. Why didn't you let us deal with it? You were supposed to observe."

A familiar, throbbing ache started to build right behind my eyes. I stared at her, genuinely trying to process the sheer audacity of the question.

"Last time I checked, Gremory, the mutated chimera was trying to rip my throat out," I said, my voice dropping into a flat, irritated deadpan. "While you did absolutely nothing. You didn't even try to jump in. The only people who actually swung a weapon were Koneko, Kiba, and Isa."

Rias opened her mouth, then snapped it shut, her face flushing slightly as she realized I was right.

I let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through my dusty hair. "I'm going home."

I turned my back on them and started walking toward the warehouse exit. But before I could take three steps, a small shadow blurred into my peripheral vision.

Koneko dropped into a low stance right in front of me, completely blocking my path. Her golden eyes were narrowed into dangerous slits.

"You know," Koneko said, her voice quiet but laced with malice, "we never actually had the time to settle the score."

I stopped, looking down at the petite white-haired girl in confusion. "What score?"

Koneko didn't answer with words. She cracked her knuckles, the sound echoing sharply in the quiet warehouse. "For attacking my familiar."

Without any telegraphing, she launched herself off the concrete. She threw a devastating, aura-laced punch aimed directly at my jaw. Thanks to my Agility, I saw it coming just in time. I leaned backward, letting the small fist slice through the empty air an inch from my nose.

But Koneko wasn't just a brawler; she was the Rook. She used the momentum of her missed punch to pivot in mid-air, bringing her leg up in a brutal roundhouse kick.

The heel of her shoe slammed directly into my left shoulder.

Even with my Endurance at 50, the sheer kinetic force of a Devil's strike felt like getting hit by a speeding truck. I was lifted entirely off my feet, flying backward until I crashed into the corrugated metal siding of the warehouse with a deafening bang.

I groaned, shaking the dizziness out of my head, and slowly pushed myself up from the dented metal.

"Koneko! Stand down!" Rias screamed from the center of the room, genuine panic in her voice. "He's not the enemy!"
