As we stepped out of the mansion, the sensory assault was overwhelming. I had seen processions before, but always from the side of the road, holding a basket of petals to throw at Elowen's feet.
Never like this.
The security was immense; three rings of armed guards in full tactical gear. The crowd was a literal sea of bodies, held back by iron barricades. As soon as Gideon and I appeared on the grand stairs, a roar went up that was so loud it felt like a physical blow to my chest.
"ALPHA! ALPHA! JUSTICE FOR AURELIUS GOLDBANE!"
Flashbulbs from the press core went off like a rhythmic lightning storm, blinding and glorious. I gripped Gideon's arm, my chin held high.
Everywhere I looked, I saw flyers pinned to the stone pillars with Gideon's face, looking noble and heroic. They had the words THE SHIELD OF LUPIN printed in bold gold letters.
They loved him. And because I was on his arm, they were starting to love me, too.
"Gideon! Alpha Gideon!"
"You're the best!"
