Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: Breakthrough I

Raul stayed seated long after the echoes of battle faded from the stone.

His back pressed against the cold wall, legs stretched out, hands resting loosely on his knees. Sweat cooled against his skin, leaving a faint chill that crept inward. His breathing had slowed, but the ache hadn't left, not the deep, bone-heavy kind that came from pushing past your limit and finding out it still wasn't enough.

Enduring Heart did its work quietly.

The buzzing fog in his head thinned first. Thoughts sharpened, and awareness returned. The tremor in his hands faded, replaced by that familiar, stubborn steadiness. His body, though, his body lagged, muscles screaming their protest, joints stiff and swollen with exhaustion.

Raul tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling.

"Just one percent left," he murmured.

Arin, who had been sharpening his blade nearby, glanced up. "Don't let it get to your head. One more real fight and you'll break through."

Victor nodded in agreement, leaning against his shield. "You earned it already. Rank's just catching up."

Mina smiled faintly but said nothing.

They didn't linger.

Rest in the Mines was never safe for long, no matter how quiet things felt. After Raul could stand without wobbling, and after Mina confirmed Ghost was still scouting ahead, they moved again.

The tunnels narrowed, then widened, then narrowed again. This branch felt… different. Older. The stone here was smoother in places, worn down by weight and time rather than claws and battles.

Then Ghost returned.

The sensation hit Mina first, an abrupt pulse of information through their contract. Size. Space. Heat. Movement.

Her steps slowed.

"There's a chamber ahead," Mina said quietly. "Three times bigger than Castle's old one."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "And?"

"Two Captain Rank Stonebacks," she added. "They're alive, eating, and not even paying attention."

Raul whistled under his breath. "That's… odd."

"They're not guarding anything," Mina went on. "Just eating. They don't look alert at all."

Arin stopped walking. "Then we don't need to engage."

Mina tilted her head, considering. Then she looked at Raul.

Raul met her gaze.

They nodded, wordless, instinctive.

Victor noticed immediately. "I don't like that look. What are you thinking?"

"Let's just check for ourselves," Mina said lightly.

Arin sighed but followed anyway.

The chamber opened up like a hollowed-out cavern, vast enough that even Castle would look small inside it. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like the teeth of some ancient beast. Bones littered the ground: old, cracked, picked clean.

At the center sat two massive Stoneback Lizards.

They were bigger than Castle had been in life. Their armored hides were thicker, darker, etched with scars and mineral deposits that had fused with their scales. Each of them hunched over a carcass, jaws working slowly, methodically, as if time itself had slowed around them.

Slothful, gluttonous, and dangerous.

Victor swallowed. "What should we do?"

Mina didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Castle's contract. Felt the steady, overwhelming presence waiting just beneath the surface of her mana.

Then she said, "We can take them."

Arin turned sharply. "Mina…"

"With Castle," Mina added calmly. "It'll be controlled."

Raul stepped forward. "I'll help. Just assist. They're slow, I can bait, disrupt, open gaps."

Arin's expression hardened. "You're still Soldier Rank."

"I'm at ninety-nine percent," Raul replied. "And I know when to pull back."

"That's what everyone says right before they don't," Arin shot back.

Raul shrugged. "Trust me."

Arin exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "I hate this."

Mina grinned. "You'll get over it."

"Fine," Arin said, defeated. "But the second things go wrong…"

"We retreat," Mina finished. "Same as always."

Raul rolled his shoulders, blades sliding into his hands. "Let's go."

Mina moved first.

She didn't charge.

She leapt.

Her body blurred as she crossed the distance, spear already spinning in her grip. The first Stoneback barely had time to lift its head before Mina drove Midnight Flash down into the armor seam behind its skull.

The impact cracked like thunder.

The Stoneback roared, the sound deep enough to vibrate the cavern walls. It reared up instinctively.

And Castle descended.

The undead Captain Rank Stoneback materialized midair, violent purple mana pouring off its body like smoke. It crashed down onto the second Stoneback with titanic force, jaws clamping onto its neck as both monsters slammed into the stone floor.

The cavern shook.

Mina landed lightly, rolling away as the first Stoneback thrashed, tail smashing into the ground where she'd been a heartbeat earlier.

"Castle," she commanded. "Hold."

Castle obeyed.

Its massive limbs locked around its opponent, undead strength grinding stone against stone. The living Stoneback roared, claws scraping uselessly against Castle's dead armor.

Raul moved.

Flowstep carried him across the chamber in a flash, too fast for the Stonebacks' eyes to track. He slashed at tendons, not aiming to kill, just to slow. Just to disrupt.

The first Stoneback turned toward him, enraged.

Too slow.

Raul darted in and out, blades flashing, leaving shallow cuts along joints and underplates. Every movement was measured, no wasted energy. No panic.

Mina engaged fully now.

She drove her spear forward again and again, strikes reinforced by Unbroken Guard, each blow landing with precision rather than brute force. She wasn't trying to crush the Stoneback; she was controlling it.

The monster snapped at her, jaws closing where her head had been a moment before.

Mina slid under the bite, planted her foot against its chest, and shoved off, twisting midair and bringing her spear down across its eye ridge.

The Stoneback howled.

Raul used the opening.

He sprinted straight up its flank, using protruding scales as footholds, then launched himself off its shoulder and plunged both daggers into the soft flesh beneath its jaw.

The monster bucked violently.

Raul ripped the blades free and was already gone, landing in a roll and skidding to a stop just as the Stoneback collapsed to one knee.

Castle roared a dead, hollow sound and tightened its grip.

The second Stoneback fought harder.

It twisted, slammed Castle into a pillar hard enough to shatter stone, then bit down on Castle's shoulder, tearing off a chunk of undead flesh.

Purple mana flared.

Castle didn't flinch.

It headbutted the living Stoneback, then slammed it into the ground again and again, relentless, merciless.

Mina joined them, spear striking from above, each attack precise, controlled. She avoided the head. She was already thinking ahead.

No deep injuries.

The first Stoneback, wounded and furious, chose a new target.

Raul.

It abandoned its slow, grinding advance and exploded forward, stone-shaking mass moving with a speed that had no business belonging to something that large. Its jaws snapped shut where Raul had been a heartbeat ago—

—but he was already gone.

Flowstep burned as he twisted aside, boots scraping sparks from the cavern floor. The miss bought him less than a second.

The tail came down.

Raul turned mid-motion, blades crossing instinctively, but the impact still caught him.

Hard.

The world inverted.

He slammed into the cavern wall with a sound like breaking stone. The impact drove the breath from his lungs. Cracks spiderwebbed outward behind him. Pain detonated through his ribs, white and absolute.

Raul slid down the rock, vision blurring, ears ringing.

The Stoneback didn't hesitate.

It charged.

Mouth open.

Teeth like cleavers.

Ending distance with horrifying certainty.

Raul's breath hitched.

For a split second, fear clawed up his spine—

—and Enduring Heart crushed it.

Not dulled or soothed.

Destroyed.

Pain remained. Damage remained. But panic had no foothold.

Raul planted his foot against the wall and pushed.

Too much.

Flowstep screamed in protest as he forced it past familiarity, past comfort, past the edge he'd learned to respect. His body moved before thought could catch up, motion snapping clean and precise despite the agony tearing through him.

The Stoneback's jaws slammed shut, missing him by inches.

Raul had already slipped past its head, inside the reach of its bite.

He didn't think. His body settled, angles lining up, the chaos shrinking to a single, clean opening.

Something clicked inside him.

Raul drove both daggers upward.

The blades crossed as they went in, punching deep beneath the Stoneback's skull, guided by instinct refined into certainty. Steel met resistance, then passed through it entirely, piercing straight through the brainstem.

The monster shuddered once.

Then it went still.

Raul hit the ground hard, rolling across the stone before coming to rest on his back. His chest heaved violently, lungs burning like they'd been scraped raw. His hands trembled, fingers refusing to close around the daggers any longer.

Pain flooded back in.

But something else stayed.

A heat, steady and unshakable, settled in his core, not adrenaline, not Enduring Heart's suppression, but stability. His breathing slowed despite the exhaustion. His pulse steadied instead of spiraling.

Raul stared up at the cavern ceiling, blinking slowly.

"…Huh."

He could feel it.

The difference.

Silence spread through the chamber.

Mina turned.

Castle released the second Stoneback at her command. The massive creature collapsed under accumulated wounds and pressure, still alive, but helpless, pinned beneath sheer weight and shattered footing.

Mina exhaled and smiled. It wasn't wide or surprised, just quiet, like she'd already reached the answer on her own.

Raul let out a breath that turned into a short, disbelieving laugh. His chest still hurt. Everything hurt. But beneath it, his body felt… aligned. Like it finally belonged to him completely.

"…So that's what it feels like," he muttered.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

And when he opened them again,

Raul Slade was no longer a Soldier Rank anymore.
