Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

Mia decided she'd had enough of the cryptic texts. She called Luna.

"Hey, Lu. Need some advice. Got a weird situation with Ryder Enterprises."

Luna's voice was instantly alert. "What happened?"

Mia filled her in on the meeting with Ethan, the files, and the mysterious texts. Luna listened quietly, then said, "Mia, this sounds huge. And scary. Do you want to drop it?"

Mia hesitated. Part of her wanted to dig deeper. Part of her wanted to run.

Luna's voice was firm. "Mia, if you're in over your head, drop it. We can figure something else out."

Mia thought about the byline, the scoop, the story of a lifetime. And the mysterious texts. Her mind was a whirlwind of pros and cons.

"I'm gonna dig a little deeper," Mia said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I'll be careful."

Luna sighed, the sound crackling through the phone. "Okay. But you tell me everything. And I mean everything. If you don't check in with me by midnight tomorrow, I'm calling the cops."

Mia smiled, feeling a rush of gratitude. "I will, Lu. Promise."

As they hung up, Mia's mind was made up. She'd meet Ethan tomorrow, get more info on Ryder Enterprises. And she'd be ready.

Mia's phone buzzed – an email from Ethan. "Tomorrow night. My office. 7 PM. Come prepared."

Prepared for what? Her mind was racing with possibilities.

Mia walked to her tiny kitchen, the dim light casting shadows on the walls. She poured herself a glass of wine, the liquid crimson in the dim light. What secrets was she getting into?

The city outside was alive, neon lights bleeding into the night. Mia's apartment felt small, suffocating. She needed air.

She grabbed her jacket and headed out, into the night. The streets were alive, music pulsing from clubs, people laughing on corners. Mia walked, letting the city swallow her for a while.

Her phone buzzed again. Unknown number. "Don't go to Ethan's office."

Mia's heart skipped a beat.

Who was this? And how did they know about Ethan's office?

She stopped on the sidewalk, fingers hovering over the phone screen. Should she respond? Or ignore it?

The unknown number sent another text. "He's not who you think he is, Mia."

Mia's grip on her phone tightened. What did that mean? Ethan had seemed so sure, so confident. Was he playing her?

She thought back to their meeting, his words, his smile. Had she missed something?

Mia turned around, heading back to her apartment. She needed to dig deeper into Ethan, into Ryder Enterprises. And she knew just the person to help.

She pulled up a contact on her phone and hit call. "Alex, need a favor."

Alex was a tech whiz, a friend from her journalism days. "What's up, Mia?"

"I need everything you can find on Ethan Ryder and Ryder Enterprises. Deep dive."

Alex's tone turned serious. "Sounds like trouble. You sure?"

Mia glanced around the dark street. "Positive."

The city pulsed around her as she waited for Alex's reply. What secrets was Ethan hiding?

Alex's reply came a minute later. "Got something. Ethan Ryder's history is... interesting. Father was a whistleblower against Ryder Enterprises. He died under suspicious circumstances."

Mia's eyes narrowed. "What about Ethan?"

Alex's voice was low. "Ethan took over Ryder Enterprises a year ago. Since then... deals got shadier. Connections to some shady people."

Mia's mind was spinning. "Thanks, Alex. Be careful on your end, okay?"

Alex chuckled. "You too, Mia. Watch your back."

Mia ended the call, her thoughts racing. Ethan was using her. For what?

She got to her apartment, locked the door behind her. The shadows seemed darker now.

Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. "Don't trust anyone, Mia."

Mia got so frightened that she let out a little scream, though not loud enough. Now, what did they want from her, she asked no one in particular?

Mia's gaze darted around her apartment, the dim light casting shadows on the walls. She needed a plan. And she needed to know more.

She booted up her laptop, fingers flying across the keyboard as she dug into Ethan's files. The documents revealed a web of deals, connections, and numbers that didn't add up.

Suddenly, a document caught her eye. "Project Eclipse". What was that?

Mia's phone buzzed, breaking her focus. A text from Ethan. "Tomorrow night. My office. Don't be late."

Mia's heart skipped a beat. She typed out a response. "What about Project Eclipse?"

The response was instant. "We discuss it tomorrow. Come alone."

Mia's instincts screamed at her. This was big. And dangerous.

She glanced at her clock. 11 PM. Luna would be worried.

Mia quickly texted Luna. "Got more info. Be careful. Love you."

Luna's response was immediate. "Be careful too. <3"

Mia smiled, feeling a rush of gratitude. She had people watching her back.

But who was watching Ethan's?

Mia's instincts were on high alert. She knew she couldn't trust Ethan, but she needed to know more about Project Eclipse.

She decided to dig deeper into the files on her laptop. The documents revealed more connections, more deals. And a pattern of corruption that went all the way to the top.

As she scrolled through the files, her eyes landed on a folder labeled "Classified".Was this it?

She opened the folder, her eyes widened as she scanned the contents in the folder. Photos, recordings, documents... it was all there. Evidence of Ethan's involvement in some shady deals.

Mia's phone buzzed again, making her jump. A text from Luna. "Mia, be careful. I got a weird feeling about this."

Mia's heart was racing. She quickly typed out a response. "I will, Lu. Got some crazy stuff here. Will fill you in tomorrow."

Just then, her door creaked open. Mia spun around, her heart pounding. A figure slipped in, dressed in black.

Mia's voice caught in her throat and her face was as white as a sheet of paper as a shakily asked"Who's there?"

The figure in black didn't move or speak. Mia's heart was racing as she stared at the shadowy form.

Suddenly, the figure stepped forward, into the dim light of Mia's apartment. It was a woman, with piercing green eyes and a messy bob of dark hair.

"Ava," Mia breathed. A friend from her journalism days. "You scared me."

Ava's eyes darted around the room, like she was checking for threats. "Mia, I got your message. What's going on?"

Mia gestured to her laptop. "Ethan Ryder. He's involved in some heavy stuff. And I think I'm in over my head."

Ava's gaze locked onto the laptop screen. "Project Eclipse?"

Mia nodded. "Yeah. You know about it?"

Ava's expression turned grim. "It's worse than you think Mia."
