Sunlight hit my face, while clothes clung to me like a second skin. Ella's room smelled like old books and something vanilla. My head felt heavy, and empty as if thoughts had been scooped out. I don't remember how I got here.
Fresh light cut through the curtains, aiming straight for my eyes as if the sky meant harm. A slow throb pushed against my skull, steady like footsteps toward an ending. The inside of my mouth carried the scent of last night's mistake. Fabric clung sideways around me, shoes still stuck to my feet, colors dragged messy across Ella's sheets.
A mess walked around on two legs. That mess was me.
Bits of yesterday evening returned, sharp and ugly. There was a gathering. Bottles of vodka. Way too many bottles. Then Daniel showed up wearing that pair of jeans. Madison pressed her lips to his. I turned to Jayce, wanting his mouth on mine. The look on Daniel's face after he spotted us.
Frozen stare, full of hurt. Off he went without a word.
