Stillness stretches time like pulled taffy. It doesn't race - just piles up, quiet, between breaths. Some mornings belong to data, pages thick with notes. Others unfold in streets with names you didn't know yesterday. Thoughts settle into notebooks. Later, hands open them across oceans. Alone time reveals your inner strength. Performance fades into silence. Roles dissolve without notice. Being there matters most. Joy appears quietly, not shouting, just staying - calm as breathing.

Midway through a gathering in Portland, he appears. Out of nowhere, moving past people packed together.

This isn't Daniel. Meet Marcus Chen instead - shared lab space with Daniel years ago, during those long semesters on campus. Lately I've seen him drift into academic mixers; quiet presence, brief glance upward, then gone before words form. But today, suddenly, we both wait beside steaming trays of brew - his shoes planted now, rooted like something shifted underground.
