A Life in the Hidden Leaf

Chapter 16 - Part 1

Naruto was already off the crater floor.

Sage Mode held. The markings sat sharp on his face, the pigmentation dark against the dust. Orange eyes tracked everything a half-beat before it happened — a tile slipping, a shift in the smoke, the way a cloak hem moved before a foot did. Fukasaku's claws were locked into his shoulder, the old toad's weight small and solid through the flak. Every breath the toad took was a reminder that the natural energy still had a source sitting right there.

The air out here was worse than the crater. Dust hung in sheets. Smoke crawled along what was left of the streets. Broken rooftops leaned like drunks, beams exposed, paper walls gone. Fires still chewed at the edges of collapsed shops. The bite of ozone sat over blood and scorched wood, sharp enough to taste.

The Deva Path came forward in short, even steps. Red hair dull under the haze. Rinnegan empty. The black rods in his face and body caught what little light made it through the smoke. He did not hurry. He did not need to. The other two were already with him. Preta Path at his left, that hungry stillness in the way he held his hands open, palms ready. Asura Path at his right, metal seams showing through the cloak, one arm already thicker than it should have been, the plating along the forearm splitting as if it wanted to open.

"The jinchūriki will surrender," the Deva Path said. No heat in it. No rise. Just the same flat voice that had been used on dying shinobi all afternoon. "Hand yourself over. The pain ends. Resist, and more of this village dies."

Naruto spat grit and blood to the side. It hit a broken tile and sat there dark. "You killed Jiraiya-sensei." His voice came out raw, scraped down to the middle. "You don't get to talk like you're doing us a favor. You don't get to stand in my village and call this mercy."

The Deva Path's head tilted a fraction. "Mercy is an end to suffering. You are prolonging it."

"Careful," Fukasaku muttered near his ear, claws tightening. "Don't dump the natural energy on raw force. The one in front of you is not the source. Break the line. Don't pick a fistfight with a puppet and call it even."

"I know." Naruto's hands came together. Chakra spun up in his palm, loud and tight, the sphere building until the air around it hummed. Sage Mode made the weight of it clearer — how much was his, how much was the mountain. "I'm not here to figure him out. I'm here to put him down."

He charged.

The Rasengan came in fast and clean, no wasted flourish. Preta Path stepped into it like he'd been waiting the whole time, feet set, hands out. The sphere hit those palms and died. No explosion. No shockwave. Just that ugly pull, the jutsu collapsing inward until there was nothing left but Naruto's empty hand and the cold look on Preta's face. The chakra was gone like it had never been spun.

"Shit—"

Asura Path's arm split open with a mechanical scream. The cloak tore along the seam. Missiles kicked out of the casing in a tight cluster, heat smearing the air, the smell of scorched metal cutting through the smoke. Blades followed, snapping out of the other arm with a hard metallic click-click-click. Naruto kicked off a broken beam, frog-movement snapping his body sideways through the smoke. One missile chewed the stone where his head had been and turned it into a crater the size of a cart. Another clipped his cloak and tore it, the fabric whipping away in burning shreds. He hit a rooftop on one hand, rolled across loose tiles, and came up running along the pitch, Sage Mode feeding him the next three steps before his feet found them.

"Keep moving," Fukasaku rasped. "Don't give the orange one a line."

Deva Path did not chase. He stood in the open and watched the angles, Rinnegan turning with Naruto's path like the whole street was a board. When Naruto cut back in off the roof edge, the hand was already up.

Shinra Tensei hit like a wall.

Naruto got an arm up. It was not enough. The force threw him off the roof and across a street of rubble, cloak gone, body tumbling through dust and broken signage. He twisted mid-air on instinct, spotted a floating slab of masonry, and kicked it to kill the spin. He landed hard on one knee. Stone bit through the cloth. Blood in his mouth again, hot and copper. Fukasaku grunted from the impact and held on, claws digging deeper.

"He's timing you," the toad said, voice tight against his ear. "Waiting for the straight line. Don't give him a straight shot. You do that again and he puts you through a building."

Naruto wiped his face with the back of his wrist. Grit smeared through the blood. The grin he wore was thin, but the orange eyes stayed hard. "Yeah. I noticed."

He pushed up. Sage Mode still held.

"Next time I don't throw it at the one with the hands," Naruto muttered.

"Now you're listening," Fukasaku said.

Yasuo worked the rim.

He did not go into the Path fight. The signatures in the open ground were loud enough without him adding another body to it. Naruto's Sage Mode burned bright and sharp to the east. The three Path signatures sat cold against it. That was Naruto's ground. Yasuo's was everything still trying to live around the edge of it.

A medic team had been caught under a leaning wall when the last repulsion ripple ran through the block. Two of them, plus a wounded chunin they had been dragging. The wall was coming down in pieces. Yasuo cut in from the side, Wind along both hands, and sheared the worst of the falling timber before it finished them. The beam split with a wet crack and dropped short of the medic's spine. Lightning kept his feet light over the broken stone. He hauled the first medic out by the harness, then the second, then got a shoulder under the chunin and pulled him clear as the rest of the wall finally went.

"Move. Don't stop in the open. Slug's that way — green light. Go."

The lead medic coughed dust and nodded, already grabbing the chunin's other arm. "Didn't see the wall shift—"

"You wouldn't have. Keep going."

They moved.

A last Animal Path dog, armor cracked and one eye gone, came low along an evac line of civilians and two genin. The genin had kunai out and the wrong stance for a thing that size. The civilians were packed too tight in the alley mouth. Yasuo met the summon at the opening. Wind took the front legs in a low, screaming arc. The dog dropped chest-first. Lightning locked the spine before it could rise, a short burst straight into the gap in the armor. The thing jerked once and stayed down, claws scraping stone and then going still.

He pointed the group at the slug. "Keep low. Stay together. Don't cut through the open avenue — that's in the Path's line. Take the side street."

The older genin swallowed and herded the civilians. No names. No pause. Yasuo was already scanning the next gap — another leaning storefront, a smear of blood that still had a pulse under it, the next place a body could get caught when the open ground threw another wave.

Tsunade stood on what was left of a command roof near the largest Katsuyu segment. The Strength of a Hundred Seal glowed on her forehead, a hard diamond of light that cost her every second it stayed lit. Her torn Hokage robe hung open more than it should have. Blonde hair stuck to her neck and temples in damp strands. Her heavy tits strained the ruined cloth, the soft weight sitting full and flushed, dark nipples stiff where milk had soaked through in irregular patches. The fabric clung to the curves. Every breath shifted that weight. Every shift smeared more wet into the robe.

Between her thighs the mess from earlier was still there. Sticky. Warming again with the strain and the running. She could feel it when she planted her feet, the leftover slick from the last time she had pulled Yasuo behind cover, still sitting in her, still leaking a little when she clenched. She ignored it the way she ignored the tremor in her hands.

She activated the seal. "Hold the corridors. Do not charge the Deva Path. I want medics rotating through Katsuyu, not standing in the open waiting to die. West line, keep the evac moving. If you cannot form a wall, you carry. Acknowledge."

A scatter of confirmations came back, thin and tired.

Shizune was at her shoulder, face grey under the dirt, a supply scroll clenched in one hand. "The seal is burning too hot. You need to drop it in cycles or you're going to drop with it. I can see it in your hands."

"If I cycle it now, people die." Tsunade did not look at her. Her eyes stayed on the field. "Keep the supplies moving. That's your job."

"This is also my job." Shizune's voice stayed low, meant for the roof, not the channel. "You're leaking. You're shaking. The last time you went behind the slug you came back standing, and it's already wearing off. I'm not blind. The robe is wet. Your legs are locked like you're holding yourself together."

Tsunade's jaw locked. A fresh trickle of milk ran down the underside of one heavy tit and soaked another patch into the cloth. "Then stop talking and work. If I need a lecture I'll ask for one when the village is not on fire."

Shizune held her stare a second longer, then turned back to the runners. "You heard her. Supplies to the north segment. Move."

Tsunade's golden eyes swept the field and caught Yasuo for half a second on the next street, moving a wounded chunin into the green glow. Her body reacted before the rest of her did. Nipples tightened hard against the wet cloth, a dull ache blooming under the milk. A warm trickle ran down and dripped inside the robe. Her thighs pressed together on instinct. The leftover slick from earlier shifted when she clenched, a filthy reminder that the last reset was already fading and her head was starting to fray around the edges of the orders. She held the next command in her mouth and did not break. Not here. Not on the roof with Shizune three feet away.

Yasuo came up the broken stair a minute later. He did not waste the approach. Dust on him. Blood on his hands that was not his. He stopped at a range that looked like a status report.

"North line is holding," he said. "Evac is still moving. Extra Paths are on Naruto. Preta and Asura. He's in Sage Mode. He's not winning clean. Deva's timing the pushes. I pulled two medic teams off a collapse and killed a leftover dog on the alley line. That's the rim. The middle is his."

Tsunade took it with a short nod. Her throat worked once. Up close the wet patches on her robe were obvious. The smell of milk sat under the smoke if anyone had the time to notice. She did not adjust the cloth.

"Then we hold the ground he isn't standing on," she said. "No one charges that open stretch. Get back out there. I'll call if I need you."

The last part sat between them for a beat too long. Her pupils were a little wide. Her thighs were still pressed together under the ruined pants. She could feel herself leaking into the cloth and hated how badly she wanted to drag him off the stair and fix it before the next wave. She turned back to the seals before it could become anything else.

"All units. Maintain the inner corridors. Anyone who can still form a wall, do it. We are not folding."
