Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 : FRAGMENTS

As the first light of dawn filtered through the curtains at exactly 6:00 AM, Akira's eyes slowly fluttered open. Her initial consciousness was met with a dull, persistent throb in her shoulder—the physical toll of a restless night and the heavy burdens she carried. However, as she turned her head to the side, the discomfort didn't just fade; it vanished entirely, rendered insignificant by the sight beside her. There lay Naea, surrendered to a deep, peaceful slumber, her features radiating a profound innocence that seemed to still the very air in the room. Watching her—so vulnerable and serene—Akira felt a surge of warmth wash over her, a healing balm that chased away every ounce of pain and replaced it with a newfound, radiant spark of devotion.

Gently, Akira eased Naea's head off her shoulder, moving with a tender precision to free her trapped arm without disturbing the peace of the morning. Before rising from the bed, she leaned in and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against Naea's forehead, whispering a quiet, "Good morning, Miss Sato." That kiss was more than a gesture; it was a silent acknowledgment that a new sunshine had entered Akira's life, reflecting a brightness on her face that had been missing for years. As she prepared to leave for her department, a heavy reluctance pulled at her heart—the thought of leaving Naea was almost unbearable. This was her first official day back since the life-altering surgery that had kept her on leave, and the transition felt daunting. After slipping quietly out of Naea's apartment, she returned to her own to freshen up and prepare a quick breakfast, which she then carefully carried back to Apartment 44. By the time she stepped back inside, Naea had already woken up and was currently in the shower, the sound of running water echoing the start of their new chapter.

As soon as Naea stepped out of the shower, she meticulously followed her skincare routine before slipping into her outfit. Emerging from her bedroom, she made her way toward the kitchen, only to find Akira leaning against the counter, waiting patiently for them to share breakfast together. Akira had prepared a remarkably healthy meal, and Naea approached her with a radiant, affectionate smile, greeting her with a soft "Good morning." Akira, catching her eye with a playful glint, teased her in a funny way, "You're late, Naea! I wished you a morning as soon as I woke up, and you're only replying now?" Naea laughed it off and, as they began to eat, she asked without looking up if Akira was heading back to the department today. When Akira nodded, Naea followed up by asking if she was finally feeling better. Akira took a deliberate five-second pause, her gaze softening as she replied, "Yes, much better... especially since last night." Realizing Akira was teasing her about their intimate time, Naea began to blush and hurriedly told her to finish her breakfast and get going. Akira let out a light laugh, leaning in close to catch a better look at her reddened cheeks and asking if she was indeed blushing, but Naea gently pushed her back with her hand, jokingly telling her that she was being "a bit much" today.

After finishing her breakfast quickly, Akira prepared to leave, but she suddenly stopped and turned back toward Naea. With a lingering gaze, she asked, "Don't you think you should give me something?" leaving Naea looking back in confusion. Akira's eyes flickered from Naea's face down to her lips; Naea, instantly catching the hint, replied firmly, "Absolutely not. If you want to go, then just go." Feeling a bit dejected, Akira pulled out her phone, unblocked Naea on messenger, and sent a text: "Hey Miss Sato, if you give me one kiss, Prosecutor Akira will stay energetic all day," followed by a shower of pleading emojis. Watching her type, Naea saw the notification pop up on her phone and read the message, looking up to find Akira watching her with hopeful eyes. Naea teased her, asking if she'd like some vitamins for energy instead, which left a flash of disappointment on Akira's face as she sighed, "It's okay... I'll be fine."

As Akira turned to leave, Naea called out her name. Akira stopped but didn't turn around. Naea picked up Akira's coat, which had been set aside during breakfast, walked up behind her, and commanded in a cold yet affectionate voice, "Arms up." Akira complied, and as Naea helped her into the coat, she remarked, "You shouldn't be in such a rush that you forget things." Once the coat was on, Akira turned to say thank you, but Naea didn't just stand there; she grabbed Akira's collar, pulled her close, and planted a sweet, lingering kiss on her cheek. Akira's eyes fluttered shut, soaking in the moment, until Naea gently pushed her back and said, "Now, you can go." With a radiant smile plastered on her face, Akira headed down to her car and drove toward the department, while Naea, after finishing the dishes, grabbed her keys and headed out to the hospital.

As Akira entered the prosecution department, she was met with a chorus of welcomes from the staff. She offered a brief "Thank you" before heading straight to her cabin, where she immediately resumed her work on the Crimson Canvas case. Her focus intensified when she learned that Minato Takahashi would be returning to Japan from Spain in just two days. Hearing that name ignited a cold fury within her, reminding her that she still hadn't told Kenji the truth. She decided then and there that she would confront Kenji today. However, as she decoded the case files, she stumbled upon another case—one far more disgusting and brutal than the Blue Butterfly incident. The details were so sickening they made her head spin; she couldn't fathom how such atrocities were happening in the heart of Tokyo.

The "Gilded Cage" Incident (The Brutal Details)

This case wasn't just kidnapping; it was a systematic destruction of the human soul. The file that left Akira reeling contained these horrific details:

The Silent Scream: Victims were kept in high-tech, soundproofed chambers that looked like luxury apartments from the outside. Inside, their vocal cords were surgically modified so they could never scream for help. A mild anesthetic was continuously dripped into their eyes, keeping their vision in a permanent, blurry haze.

Identity Annihilation: The torture wasn't just physical; it was psychological. Victims were drugged to erase their memories. Through constant video and audio loops, they were "reprogrammed" with new identities, forced to believe they were living statues or different people entirely.

The Twisted Exhibition: The most repulsive part was the "Gilded Cage" itself. An elite underground society viewed these victims as "living art installations." Akira saw a photo of a victim sitting at a dining table—eyes open but completely vacant, like a mannequin. In front of her was a photo of her childhood self, yet her face remained expressionless; her identity had been completely hollowed out.

After decoding the disturbing file, Akira felt a heavy tension settle in her mind, and her heart craved the comfort of Naea's presence. Acting on impulse, she drove to the hospital and headed straight to the reception desk to ask for Dr. Naea's whereabouts. Upon being told that Naea was in the cafeteria, a fleeting smile touched Akira's lips, though she carefully masked it from those around her. However, the moment she reached the cafeteria, her warmth turned into cold fury; she saw Naea sitting with Kenji, sharing coffee together. While Kenji had a visible smile on his face, Naea sat there with her usual calm expression. Instead of approaching them directly, Akira pulled out her phone and sent a message asking, "Naea, where are you?" She watched as the notification popped up on Naea's phone, seeing Naea look at it, but to Akira's growing resentment, Naea neither replied nor marked the message as seen. Feeling deeply ignored and stung by the sight, Akira stormed out of the hospital and retreated to her office to bury herself in case files. When a notification finally arrived later, it was a curt, one-word reply from Naea: "Hospital." Seeing that blunt response only added fuel to Akira's anger, leaving her fuming at her desk.

Akira channeled her frustration into overtime, pushing past her usual 7 PM departure to stay an extra hour at the office. Meanwhile, the events of the day unfolded in a series of misunderstandings. Earlier at the hospital, after Akira had stormed out, Kenji finished his coffee and told Naea to let her "Prosecutor friend" know her dare was successful; Naea had previously lied to Kenji, claiming Akira's news about their relationship was just a prank or a "dare" to cover the truth. This explains why Kenji was laughing when Akira saw them. Later, while Naea was finishing her rounds, she overheard two nurses gossiping—one mentioned seeing Prosecutor Akira earlier, while the other lamented missing her because her brother, an aspiring lawyer, was a huge fan of Akira's work. Realizing Akira had actually visited the hospital and likely saw her with Kenji, Naea finally replied to the earlier message with a blunt "Hospital" while changing out of her uniform. Feeling a sense of regret and remembering an old conversation where she had harshly denied a recovering Akira's craving for Black Forest cake, Naea decided to make amends. On her way home at 6 PM, she stopped at a bakery to buy a Dark Forest cake specifically for Akira, heading back to the apartment to wait for her.

Order of Incidents

The Hidden Truth: Naea lies to Kenji, telling him that Akira's claims about their relationship were just a "dare," which leads to their lighthearted coffee meeting.

The Misunderstanding: Akira visits the hospital, sees them laughing, sends a message that goes unanswered, and leaves in a jealous rage.

The Revelation: Naea overhears nurses talking about Akira's visit and realizes Akira saw her with Kenji; she sends the brief "Hospital" reply while leaving work.

The Peace Offering: Remembering she once scolded a postoperative Akira for wanting cake, Naea stops at a bakery at 6 PM to buy a Dark Forest cake as a surprise.

The Overtime: Unaware of the surprise, a fuming Akira stays at the Prosecution office until 8 PM to vent her anger through work.

Akira glanced at the clock and realized it was already 9:00 PM; she finally stood up, gathered her things, and headed straight to her car to drive home. Upon arriving at the WF Empire, she parked and made her way to her own sanctuary, Apartment 42. Driven by a lingering thirst and the exhaustion of the day, she went directly to the kitchen for a glass of water. However, in her distracted state, her movement was clumsy, causing a glass sitting on the edge to tip over and shatter into a mess of shards on the floor. Without reaching for a brush or any tools, she began picking up the broken glass with her bare hands, seemingly numb to the danger. The sharp edges sliced into her skin, and one particularly deep cut began to bleed profusely. Yet, Akira showed no reaction—not even a wince; she simply gave her hand a slight, detached shake to flick away the blood just as the persistent chime of the doorbell rang through the quiet apartment.

As the persistent ringing of the doorbell echoed, Akira walked toward the entrance and swung the door open, only to find Naea standing there on the other side. Akira stared at her with a cold, distant gaze, her voice devoid of its usual warmth as she bluntly asked if there was something she needed. Naea was momentarily taken aback, her confusion clear as she stood there with the cake, but she knew Akira well enough to understand exactly what this sharp tone meant—it was the protective, icy wall Akira built whenever she was deeply hurt or seething with unspoken anger.
