Chapter 357: Coordination
The next morning, the delegation from the Infrastructure Command arrived on
schedule.
The lead official was a Vampire in a standard-issue military tunic. He lacked
the Skull Medallion, indicating a rank below Centurion. Flanking him were two
Skeleton Soldiers, their utility belts laden with a diverse inventory: hammers,
measuring tapes, and precision engraving chisels.
The Vampire stood at the entrance, scanning the twelve architects and their
tactical rucksacks.
"Status check. Are all units present?"
Miller nodded. "All units accounted for."
"Follow. First stop: Infrastructure Command for ID-activation. Then, the primary
construction sector."
Zero fluff. He turned and marched away.
The twelve humans followed, traversing the main thoroughfare of the Iron
Fortress. The morning city was a hive of multi-racial industry.
An Orc vendor was grilling meat-skewers, the aroma drifting for meters. Next
door, a Dwarf was selling ironware, pots and pans arrayed across the
cobblestones. Beside him... a Skeleton stood motionless behind a fruit stall, a
wooden sign indicating the price-points for various apples.
Leo stared for several seconds.
A skeleton selling fruit.
It was a visual dissonance he projected would remain un-archived for a lifetime.
Milo leaned in, his voice a low whisper.
"Do you project he accidentally drops bone-fragments on the produce?"
"Cease the vocalization."
The Infrastructure Command was localized in the Northern Sector—a heavy stone
structure with the Imperial flag snapping over the portal. Inside, the
activity-level was significantly higher than the firm back home. Vampires,
skeletons, and Ghouls weaved between desks. The walls were covered in scrolls:
urban floor-plans, architectural elevations, and geological maps. The
aesthetic... was profoundly medieval.
Leo's "Professional-Audit" reflex triggered. He examined a wall-scroll. The
lines were precise and the notations clear, but the scale-logic differed
entirely from modern standards. There was zero concept of reinforced concrete;
it was a structural mix of stone and timber. However, every critical junction
was marked with a "Magical Reinforcement Node."
This was a technology he hadn't yet archived.
A Vampire approached with a stack of ID plates. "Seventh Architectural Firm?"
"Affirmative."
"Identification plates. Carry them visibly. Authorization is required for all
construction sectors."
Miller distributed the plates. Leo looked at his: [Temporary Assignment.
Technical Consultant. Leo.]
Technical Consultant. statistically a superior title to "Draughtsman."
Procedures finalized, the Vampire led them to the construction site.
The "Site" was a massive vacant lot in the city's Eastern Sector. Stone-dust
lines already marked the general zoning, but no kinetic labor had commenced. A
security perimeter had been established, with dozens of Skeleton Berserkers
standing sentry.
"This coordinate is Phase One of the New City Initiative," the Vampire stated,
gesturing to the perimeter.
"Total area: approximately one hundred and fifty acres."
"The zoning is a 'Mixed-Use' residential and commercial sector. Residential
units are prioritized for height. Commercial stalls will align with the primary
artery."
"Structural requirements: Residential units must exceed ten levels. Commercial
units must exceed five."
Ten levels?
Leo and Milo exchanged a glance. In the Eldritch Realm, ten stories was a minor
variable. But here?
"Query: What is the status of the foundation? Has a geological survey been
conducted?" Miller asked bluntly.
The Vampire blinked. "Geological survey?"
"As in... auditing the soil density, the lithosphere depth, and the load-bearing
coefficients? For a ten-story structure, foundation parameters are the critical
win-condition."
The Vampire calculated for a moment. "Imperial architecture disregard those
variables."
"Logic?"
"Magical Reinforcement."
The Vampire walked to a neighboring three-story stone structure and slapped the
wall.
"During the construction phase of any Imperial structure, the Arcane Legion
applies a reinforcement enchantment. The resulting structural integrity is eight
to ten times the baseline of the raw material. Foundations operate under the
same logic."
"Simply stated: Imperial structures do not experience collapse."
Miller frowned. "Then identify our purpose. Why requisition us?"
"Because Imperial architects lack the logic for high-density verticality," the
Vampire answered matter-of-factly.
"Our aesthetic tradition has remained horizontal. Three levels. Five. Rarely
exceeding seven. Magical reinforcement solves the structural logic, but it
cannot solve the design-logic."
"Your experience with vertical urban density is the missing variable."
Leo understood. The Empire possesses the materials and the reinforcement tech,
but they lack the 'Blueprint' for a skyscraper. We possess the blueprints, but
have zero data on magical reinforcement.
"Accepted. I grasp the synergy," Miller said. He knelt, extracting a notebook
and pen from his bag. "We shall initiate a site-survey immediately to archive
the topographical data. Do you possess surveying equipment?"
"Affirmative."
The Vampire signaled the skeletons. Two soldiers approached, unlatching a brass
instrument from their belts.
Leo took the device. It looked like an archaic version of a level-transit, but
the brass was encrusted with runes, and the lens-tube emitted a soft sapphire
glow.
"Identify operation method."
"Level the frame. Inject Mana. The data-readout manifests in the lens."
"We possess zero Mana."
The Vampire froze. Silence reigned for three seconds.
Milo whispered from the back, "Weakest units in the room: Confirmed."
"...I shall assign a Skeleton Unit to provide the Mana-injection for your
operations."
Over the next two cycles, the twelve architects finalized the foundational
survey with the assistance of the skeletal technicians.
"Assistance" was a misnomer; the humans identified the coordinates, and the
skeletons marched over, pumped Od into the device, and generated the data. The
architects handled the logging and calculation.
The efficiency was staggering.
Leo had to admit: the integration of magic into civil engineering was leagues
ahead of their own technology. A single magical transit had saved them at least
three cycles of manual labor.
But the Grand Design still relied on them.
On the third cycle, Miller gathered the team at their quarters to audit the
preliminary results.
"I have processed the data. The foundation parameters are significantly better
than projected."
"With magical reinforcement, the load-bearing capacity is approximately five to
six times that of solid granite by our standards."
"That dense?"
"Affirmative. Theoretically, ten levels is a statistical zero. We could reach
twenty with ease."
"Two primary 'Dead Knots' remain," Miller continued, sketching on a white-board.
"First: The Empire lacks automated lifts. We cannot simply duplicate our home
designs. However, the Liaison Eric mentioned 'Floating Platforms'—a Mana-driven
transit system. We must coordinate with the Arcane Legion for that integration."
"Second: The Aesthetic shell."
"The directive is to integrate modern verticality without discarding the
Empire's medieval identity. Simply stated..."
"A Mashup?" Milo suggested.
"Exactly. A structural fusion."
Milo adjusted his glasses. Operations were transitioning to the Design Phase.
