…
Mythical Pokémon were often labeled as "underwhelming."
But that reputation existed mostly because no one had ever truly captured and trained them properly.
Well—except for Darkrai, the nightmare incarnate.
And Mew, the ancestor of all Pokémon.
As for the little one in front of him—Jirachi didn't show overwhelming combat power simply because it didn't like fighting. Otherwise, it could easily overwhelm most Pokémon out there.
Jirachi was just… adorable.
So adorable that Chen Ran didn't even want it to battle at all.
"Hello~"
Jirachi squinted happily, looking relaxed and content.
It leaned against the vinyl record player, lifting a small hand toward the flowing music that made it feel warm and calm.
"Careful, Jirachi!"
Chen Ran hurriedly stopped it and gently held its hand.
Soft.
Warm.
When Jirachi looked up at him with a slightly confused expression, Chen Ran felt his heart nearly melt.
"Jirachi, this machine is called a record player. The spinning thing is a record. If you touch it, the music won't play anymore."
He explained carefully, afraid even raising his voice might startle it.
"I understand."
Jirachi obediently took Chen Ran's hand, holding onto his fingers.
Way too cute.
"I really like this song," Jirachi said softly. "Thank you, Chen Ran."
Most Mythical Pokémon were kind, gentle, and pure-hearted.
Jirachi embodied that perfectly.
Feeling Chen Ran's warmth and sincerity, it instinctively moved closer, leaning against him.
Chen Ran couldn't have asked for more.
He pulled over a stool and sat down, letting Jirachi sit on his lap.
Its short legs rested against him, listening quietly to the music.
"Ouch."
Charmander wasn't jealous at all—if anything, it looked pleased.
It walked over and sat against Chen Ran's calf.
One person.
Two Pokémon.
Eyes closed, listening to clean, gentle music, savoring the peaceful moment.
Ding!
Charmander has resonated with the pure singing and made a breakthrough!
Charmander reached Lv. 9!
Ding!
Charmander learned the move: Smokescreen!
"..."
The sudden notification shattered the tranquility.
Chen Ran stared at Charmander in shock as it wagged its tail happily.
"Wait—you can level up just by listening to music?"
"You're unbelievable, Charmander."
Unfortunately, it seemed to be a one-time thing.
After several more minutes, Charmander's experience didn't increase further, and Chen Ran gave up on testing it.
"Jirachi."
He gently turned Jirachi to face him.
"Be my partner."
"…Partner?"
Jirachi blinked, clearly puzzled.
"What is a partner?"
As a Mythical Pokémon that awakened only once every thousand years—and could move freely for just seven days—Jirachi had no real concept of companionship.
Chen Ran smiled and pointed at Charmander.
"A partner means living together, battling together, sharing happiness—and sharing sadness."
"Charmander is my partner."
"Ouch!"
That's right!
Charmander eagerly raised a paw.
From the moment it met Jirachi, Charmander liked it. That soft, delicate presence stirred a protective instinct deep inside.
"Then… Jirachi wants to be your partner too, Chen Ran."
Jirachi learned quickly.
After awakening, the first human it saw was Chen Ran—someone it instinctively liked.
And then there was Charmander.
Jirachi understood.
"But… Jirachi only has seven days."
"After seven days, Jirachi will fall asleep again."
"And follow the shooting star… away."
Its voice lowered, and its head drooped.
That fate… was lonely.
"What a cruel setting," Chen Ran muttered.
But he wasn't worried.
Because he had something else—
the system.
"Don't worry, Jirachi."
Chen Ran took out a Poké Ball.
It looked ordinary—just a standard red-and-white ball.
But it was system-produced.
A Poké Ball that ignored the world's rules.
"As long as Jirachi stays inside this Poké Ball, you won't fall asleep after seven days."
"And you won't be taken away by a meteor either."
A system Poké Ball didn't just restore stamina or grant experience.
It could even override the laws governing Mythical Pokémon.
"Really?!"
Jirachi looked up instantly, the three blue Wish Tags swaying with excitement.
Its eyes sparkled.
"Can Jirachi really stay here… and be your partner?"
Every awakening brought back memories of thousands of lonely years.
Seven days—that was all it ever had.
Now, Chen Ran's words gave it hope.
"Yes."
Chen Ran patted his chest.
"No matter what, I won't let you leave Charmander and me after seven days."
"Ouch!"
Charmander raised both paws in agreement.
"Okay!"
Jirachi reached out and pressed the button on the Poké Ball.
A red light flashed.
Jirachi vanished.
Chen Ran clenched his fist.
He had successfully captured Jirachi.
