Chapter 19 - A NEW ALLY APPEARS FROM THE SHADOWS

Chapter 19 –A New Ally appears from the shadows

The streets of Villeneuve were quiet. Moonlight hit the cobblestones, lanterns flickered, and shadows stretched along the walls. Dan crouched on a rooftop, scanning below. Reeve adjusted his rifle beside him, eyes alert.

A noise behind them made them freeze. From the shadows, a figure stepped forward.

"You two still breathing?" the man whispered.

Reeve squinted. "Who are you?"

"I'm Keane," he said. "Mist Island survivor. Came to make sure you don't end up like the others."

Dan exhaled slowly. System ping: unknown subject. Survival traits high. Emotional state: cautious.

"How did you get here?" Dan asked.

Keane crouched next to them. "Crossed borders at night. No comms, no alerts. Took me a week. Had to get here before the humanoids settled."

Reeve raised an eyebrow. "A week? You didn't call anyone?"

Keane smirked faintly. "Calling in? Easy way to get intercepted. Silence keeps you alive."

Dan nodded. "Good to have you."

They moved quietly across rooftops, sticking to shadows. Below, subtle movements caught their eyes.

"See that?" Keane whispered, pointing to a corner. "They mimic civilians. Every twitch, every glance. Fear fuels them. Makes them faster, smarter."

Dan's system pinged: Target in range. Observation recommended. Emotional control needed.

Reeve muttered, "So we just watch while monsters practice hunting humans?"

Dan shook his head. "We survive first. Then we act."

Keane shifted slightly, voice softer. "You know… after Mist Island, I thought I'd be done with this life. But it follows you. Everywhere. Faces, screams… you think you escaped, then it drags you back."

Dan glanced at him. "You're still here. That's proof enough. You're not broken."

Keane chuckled dryly. "Maybe. But some nights… the nightmares wake me before the alarm." He paused. "I lost friends there. Didn't just survive—I watched others die while I lived. Sometimes I wonder if surviving is worse."

Reeve shook his head. "Man… that's heavy."

Dan nodded, voice low. "We've all got our demons. Let's just make sure they don't catch the civilians tonight."

Minutes stretched. Then a scream cut through the night.

In a narrow alley, a humanoid emerged. Long limbs, twisted face, eyes glowing. A young woman was cornered against the wall.

Keane hissed, "Stay calm. Watch it. Don't rush."

Reeve fired a burst from his rifle. Bullets slammed into the humanoid's limbs. Sparks flew. The creature staggered slightly but didn't stop. It lunged again toward the woman.

Dan's system buzzed: Humanoid resistant. Adaptive behavior escalating. Engagement recommended.

Dan exhaled. System, divine onload. Prep combat.

System: Divine onload ready. Strength 1000%, speed 5x, regeneration ready.

The woman dove behind a dumpster. Reeve kept firing, forcing the humanoid to dodge intermittently, but its relentless drive to attack was terrifying.

Dan's instincts flared. Vision sharpened. Every movement of the humanoid calculated in his mind.

System: Predictive strike analysis active. Optimal path ready.

The humanoid twisted, lunging at Reeve. Reeve fired another volley, buying fractions of a second. The creature adapted instantly, eyes now on Dan.

Dan crouched, pipe in hand. Every muscle tensed. Strength, speed, timing—all synced with the system.

Keane called from the rooftops, "Protect civilians! Minimize risk!"

The humanoid hissed, readying another strike.

Dan's eyes narrowed. System: combat mode active. Alignment complete. Divine onload engaged.

He lunged forward. Reeve crouched behind cover, jaw tight, eyes wide at Dan's fluid movement.

System: Humanoid adaptive patterns detected. Adjusting in real time.

The creature twisted violently and was ready to hit.
