Chapter 26 – Breach
The containment chamber hummed with low mechanical precision.
Dan sat upright on the reinforced steel platform, wrists bound by kinetic suppressors designed for enhanced threats. The air smelled sterile. Artificial. Controlled.
He hated it.
A thick glass barrier separated him from observation officers. Behind it, silhouettes shifted. Watching. Measuring. Deciding.
The system flickered faintly in his vision.
System: Host stability at 83%. Emotional turbulence detected. External interference probability: rising.
Dan exhaled slowly.
"Cut the commentary."
Silence.
Then—
System: Threat proximity increasing. Not human.
Dan's head snapped up.
Outside the chamber, the lights flickered once.
Then twice.
The officers behind the glass exchanged confused glances.
A red pulse flashed across the ceiling.
Security breach.
Across the facility, alarms began to howl.
"Sector Four compromised!"
"Thermal signatures—multiple!"
"They're inside!"
Gunfire erupted.
Short bursts. Controlled. Professional.
Then screaming.
Dan's jaw clenched.
"You wanted containment," he muttered. "Congratulations."
The glass wall in front of him cracked—just slightly.
Something slammed into it from the outside.
Not a bullet.
A body.
A Delta operator was thrown across the corridor like a rag doll.
Behind him—
A humanoid stepped into view.
White radiant scales. Blackened veins pulsing beneath its skin. Eyes glowing faintly red.
It tilted its head.
Then looked directly at Dan.
Recognition.
Back at Morgan's house—
Sophia backed slowly away from the shimmering distortion in the room.
The air felt wrong. Heavy.
Her phone vibrated suddenly in her hand.
Unknown number.
She hesitated.
Answered.
Static.
Then a distorted whisper:
"Leave the house. Now."
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
"Who is this?!"
The line cut.
The lights flickered.
The shimmer solidified.
Not fully visible—just a warped silhouette in the corner of the room.
Watching.
Learning.
Her breath became shallow.
The file dropped from her hands again.
A low vibration rolled through the walls.
Something was activating.
Back in the containment facility—
The humanoid outside Dan's chamber dragged its claws across the reinforced glass.
Screeeeech.
The sound was unbearable.
Bullets tore into its back from behind.
It didn't even flinch.
Its eyes never left Dan.
System: Host restraint protocols obstruct combat response. Override required.
Dan smirked faintly.
"Finally."
The glass shattered inward as the humanoid lunged.
Dan rolled off the platform just as claws tore through where his throat had been.
Even restrained, he moved fast.
Two soldiers rushed in.
One was cut down instantly.
The other emptied an entire magazine into the creature's skull.
No effect.
The humanoid grabbed him by the face—
Crack.
Dropped him.
Dan's eyes darkened.
"Override restraints."
System: Risk level extreme.
"Do it."
The suppressors snapped open.
Energy surged through his veins like wildfire.
Adrenaline flooded.
Pain receptors dulled.
The humanoid charged.
Dan met it head-on.
Their collision dented the steel wall.
Sophia ran.
The front door wouldn't open.
Locked electronically.
She didn't remember installing that.
Her breath became erratic.
She turned—
The shimmer had moved.
Closer.
It wasn't fully humanoid.
It was… scanning.
Her.
A faint mechanical tone echoed in her ears.
Then—
Her phone lit up again.
This time with a message.
No sender.
"You were not meant to find the file."
Her throat tightened.
"What do you want?"
The distortion pulsed.
And for a split second—
She saw something inside it.
A symbol.
The same symbol she had once glimpsed faintly on Dan's skin after a battle.
Her stomach dropped.
Back in Washington—
Dan drove his elbow into the humanoid's abdomen with full enhanced force.
The creature staggered.
He followed with a spinning kick.
Bone cracked.
The humanoid roared.
But there was something different.
Its skin flickered.
Almost unstable.
System: These units are modified. Adaptive strain detected.
Gunfire echoed in distant corridors.
Multiple impact sounds.
There wasn't just one.
There were many.
Dan grabbed the humanoid by the throat and slammed it against the wall.
"You followed me."
The creature's lips split in what almost looked like a smile.
It rasped in broken speech:
"…Host…"
Dan froze.
It knew.
The humanoid's claws drove into his side.
Pain exploded through him.
He gritted his teeth and ignited high-temperature energy through his palms.
The creature convulsed as unseen flames burned through it from within.
Its scales blackened.
Cracked.
Collapsed.
It fell to the ground smoking.
Dead.
Dan staggered backward, breathing heavily.
Blood dripped down his side.
System: Additional hostile signatures approaching. Estimated count: twelve.
Dan laughed softly.
"Twelve?"
The corridor lights went out.
Emergency red lights flickered on.
Shadows stretched long across the walls.
At the far end of the hallway—
Shapes moved.
Multiple.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Watching him.
At Morgan's house—
The distortion suddenly surged forward.
Sophia screamed as something invisible slammed her against the wall.
The file burst open on the floor.
Pages scattered.
One page glowed faintly.
Morgan's final words:
"If they find her… the system will activate."
Sophia's eyes widened.
"The system…?"
The distortion paused.
As if listening.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Then—
A voice.
Not from outside.
Inside her head.
Faint.
Unstable.
"…Potential host detected…"
Her breath stopped.
"No."
The room shook violently.
Windows cracked.
Outside—
A dark silhouette stood across the street.
Watching the house.
Watching her.
Back in the facility—
The twelve humanoids stepped fully into the corridor.
Their eyes glowed brighter than any Dan had seen before.
In perfect unison—
They knelt.
Not in weakness.
In acknowledgment.
The lead humanoid spoke clearly:
"You… are required."
Dan's blood ran cold.
Behind him—
The system flickered violently.
System: External signal interference detected. Attempting defensive isolation—
It cut off.
For the first time since activation—
The system went silent.
The humanoids rose.
And the lead one extended its hand toward Dan.
Not to kill.
To take.
Dan clenched his fists.
And for the first time—
He felt completely alone.
