Chapter 490 - Chapter 491: The Croatian Defender Joins the Attack!

Inter's home ground had just witnessed another magnificent direct free kick.

With the entire stadium rocking around him, Leo dropped to his knees and slid across the pitch in celebration.

Gvardiol ran around his Croatian national team teammate Brozović and threw his arms around Leo as he slid.

Klopp had been about to celebrate with his two assistants, but Zubizarreta and Krawietz had already rushed toward Leo.

The two of them had positioned themselves near the touchline before Leo even took the free kick. If he scored, they were going to sprint over immediately and celebrate with him.

There was nothing Zubizarreta enjoyed more than the moment one of Leo's free kicks hit the back of the net.

"Inter Milan concede first!"

"Leo has scored a beautiful free kick at Inter's home ground!"

"Škriniar committed the foul, and when Leo stepped up to take the free kick, he sent the ball right over Škriniar's head and into the net!"

"Handanović had no chance! Inter had already put their tallest players in the wall, but Leo's free kicks always seem to find that beautiful curve around them!"

Liverpool fans had seen Leo score directly from free kicks countless times.

"Forget the Premier League. Leo has scored plenty of free kicks in the Champions League alone!"

"Škriniar probably hasn't seen one particular Premier League statistic. Leo is one of the players fouled least often near the penalty area, because nobody dares to bring him down there!"

"If you're going to foul him, do it earlier. Before Brozović had to. Let Çalhanoğlu or Vidal foul him farther away!"

Inzaghi had considered that possibility.

What he hadn't expected was that if you gave Leo one free-kick opportunity, he really could score from it.

"I don't think Inter are playing well. They still haven't shown what they're capable of."

"Liverpool may indeed be incredibly strong in Champions League knockout matches, but Inter still have to play to their own level."

"Playing against Leo has never been easy. Everyone knows that. Every Premier League fan knows it, and so does every team that's ever faced him in the Champions League!"

Inzaghi kept looking for a solution before finally calling Dimarco over.

"Dimarco, go back to attacking. Stop worrying about marking Leo. Let Vidal and Çalhanoğlu handle him."

"You focus on combining with Brozović."

"The two of you need to use your passing to break through Rodri's defense, then get the ball to Lautaro Martínez. Or find Džeko first and have him create something for Lautaro."

"And tell Lautaro to shoot more!"

In the 27th minute.

Brozović began getting on the ball again, while Leo continued denying Çalhanoğlu any chance to receive it.

Brozović took a pass from Bastoni and initially tried to carry the ball forward, but Szoboszlai's pressure forced him to play it back to Bastoni.

The young Bastoni spotted Džeko and went long.

This time, the pass was excellent.

Konaté chased Džeko and tried to disrupt him, but Džeko still managed to bring the ball under control.

Konaté then shoved him straight to the ground.

Leo immediately ran over and told Konaté to back away.

Inter's players had initially wanted to surround Konaté and put pressure on him, but when they saw Leo step in, they simply laughed and returned to their positions to prepare for the free kick.

Inter's players respected Leo.

Leo respected Inter as well.

"Leo, come visit Argentina sometime if you get the chance. Agüero has told me a lot about you, and Dybala keeps saying he wants to meet you."

"You played against Dybala's Juventus in the Champions League a long time ago, didn't you?"

Lautaro Martínez used the stoppage before the free kick to chat with Leo.

Leo remembered Dybala very clearly.

Dybala had played extremely well when Liverpool faced Juventus back then, although he still hadn't quite developed into the player people had once expected him to become.

"I still think Dybala has a chance to become a top attacking midfielder."

"But he needs to join a club willing to build around him and find a coach willing to make him the centerpiece of the team."

Lautaro Martínez moved into Liverpool's penalty area.

For the first time, Çalhanoğlu finally had a chance to show off his delivery.

Surely Leo couldn't stop him from a free kick too?

Çalhanoğlu looked toward Lautaro Martínez.

He thought back to all the times he had assisted Lautaro in Serie A and confidently struck the ball.

A delivery that good was surely going to find Lautaro.

It would have.

If Leo hadn't suddenly appeared.

It was almost as though Leo already knew Çalhanoğlu was going to target Lautaro.

He suddenly appeared from behind Lautaro and headed the ball forward.

Not only had he intercepted Çalhanoğlu's delivery, he immediately accelerated past Vidal, caught up with his own header, and began charging forward with the ball.

Every Inter player's first instinct was to sprint back.

Brozović was the only one who grabbed Leo.

He used every bit of strength he had to stop Leo from carrying the ball forward.

Brozović was determined not to let him escape.

He received a yellow card for it, but Inter's players collectively breathed a sigh of relief.

"That was a very smart foul from Brozović."

"From there, Leo can't shoot directly."

After finally managing to hold Leo back, Brozović felt as though he had accomplished something incredibly important.

He relaxed for just a moment.

Then Leo immediately took the free kick.

Quick free kick to the right.

Right back Gvardiol surged forward!

In the past, Liverpool had generally only encouraged their right back to attack when Alexander-Arnold was playing there.

And ever since Gvardiol joined Liverpool, he had almost exclusively played at center back.

So nobody expected him to attack.

Klopp knew better.

What Gvardiol had shown in training went far beyond what you would expect from an ordinary defender.

His attacking ability was excellent.

And Gvardiol's greatest attacking strength wasn't simply his ability to create chances for teammates.

He could score himself.

"The Croatian defender is joining the attack! Gvardiol is flying forward down the right!"

"Leo's pass has opened up all that space on Inter's left! Inter's players are still trying to set up for the free kick, and nobody has noticed Gvardiol!"

Dimarco hadn't expected Gvardiol to attack.

During Inzaghi's preparations for the match, he had received no information suggesting that Gvardiol would make forward runs.

So Inzaghi had never specifically warned his players to watch for Gvardiol joining the attack.

The Croatian defender was already inside Inter's penalty area.

There were two defenders between him and Handanović.

One was Bastoni.

Gvardiol barely even noticed the other.

The moment he saw Bastoni, the youngest player in Inter's back line, he decided that was the man he was going to attack.

His technique and the way he carried the ball looked nothing like that of a typical defender.

Gvardiol actually cut past Bastoni with the ball.

His center of gravity wasn't especially low, but he still beat him.

Leo knew that in training, this was basically the only move Gvardiol used whenever he dribbled forward.

But Inter's players certainly didn't know that.

Handanović rushed out to stop him and shaped himself to prevent Gvardiol from knocking the ball past him.

But Gvardiol had no intention of pushing it around the goalkeeper.

He simply cut the ball again.

And beat Handanović too.
