Chapter 11: The Chimney Paradox and the Whispering Rocks

Time in the Silent Death Forest moved differently. There were no weekends, no deadlines. There was only the sun, the moon, and the work.

A week passed.

The clearing had changed completely. The foundation was no longer just a frame; it was a solid, shiny platform of Silver-Bark Cedar. The floor was smooth and warm. The "Mortise and Tenon" method was hard work, but it was a success.

Now, the walls were going up.

Kael stood in the center of his unfinished living room. The walls were about waist-high, built from thick Ironwood logs.

"Okay," Kael wiped his hands on a cloth. "Living room layout check."

He pointed to the east wall. "Big window there for the morning sun."

He pointed to the west. "Kitchen area there."

He pointed to the north wall. "And right here... the fireplace."

He paused. He looked at the wood all around him.

"Right," Kael muttered. "I can't build a fireplace out of wood. It would just burn the house down."

He needed stone. And not just any stone—he needed heat-resistant stone. And he needed something to stick them together.

"Mud is not strong enough," he thought.

He walked down to the stream. He looked at the soil at the bottom of the riverbank. It looked different from normal dirt. It was grey and sticky.

"System, Analysis," Kael commanded.

[Analysis Complete.]

[Material: Riverbed Clay.]

[Composition: High concentration of Limestone Dust and Silt.]

Kael smiled. "Limestone. Perfect. If I mix this with water and sand, I can make a strong cement."

But he couldn't do it with magic. He didn't have a skill for that. He had to do it the hard way.

"Mixing this by hand will take forever," Kael said. "I need a machine."

He turned back to his woodpile.

Using his axe and chisel, he spent the next two hours building a tool. It looked like a large wooden barrel on a stand, with a handle on the side. Inside the barrel, he put wooden paddles.

"Look, Noir," Kael said to the panther. "The Forest Mixer."

Noir, who was licking his paw, stopped and stared at the wooden barrel. He looked at Kael with a confused face. 'You built a toy?'

"It's not a toy," Kael explained, spinning the handle. "I put the rocks, the clay, and the water in here. I spin it. It mixes the cement perfectly without me getting my hands dirty."

Noir yawned. He didn't care about the machine. He only cared about lunch.

"But first," Kael said. "We need the stones. Big ones."

He packed a bag. He took his Durable Steel Axe, a rope, and some dried meat.

"We haven't explored the north side yet," Kael said. "It looks rocky over there. We might find stone."

They started walking.

Leaving the clearing felt strange now. The building site felt like "Home." The forest felt wild.

But Kael wasn't the scared waiter who arrived a week ago. He moved with confidence. His high Agility allowed him to step quietly over roots. His Strength (now 26) meant he could push through thick bushes easily.

And, of course, he had his partner walking beside him.

Kael looked at Noir. To Kael, Noir was a very strong panther, maybe Level 25 or 30. He was big and scary to others, but to Kael, he was just a lazy cat.

Kael didn't know the truth—that Noir was a Level 74 Beast Lord who could destroy a kingdom without breaking a sweat.

As they walked, the forest became very quiet. Birds stopped singing. Small animals hid.

"You really scare everything away, don't you?" Kael laughed.

Noir just flicked his tail.

After an hour of walking, the ground changed. The soft dirt turned into gravel. The trees became fewer.

"Jackpot," Kael whispered.

Ahead of them was a small cliff, about twenty meters high. At the bottom of the cliff, there was a huge pile of rocks. It looked like a landslide had happened recently.

Kael ran up to the pile. He picked up a heavy grey stone.

"System, Analysis," Kael commanded.

[Analysis Complete.]

[Material: Granite.]

[Properties: High Density, Excellent Heat Resistance.]

"Perfect," Kael grinned. "This is exactly what I need for the chimney."

He started looking through the pile, throwing good stones to the side.

Clatter. Clatter.

Then, Noir stopped.

The panther stood in the middle of the rocks. His ears moved forward. His tail went stiff. A low growl started in his throat.

"What is it, boy?" Kael froze, holding his axe tight. "A monster?"

Noir walked to the cliff face. He sniffed a huge boulder—a massive rock that weighed tons—that was blocking a hole in the cliff.

Noir looked back at Kael, then tapped the boulder with his paw.

Kael walked over slowly. "Is something behind this?"

He put his ear against the cold stone.

At first, silence.

Then... a sound.

Scritch... scritch...

It was quiet. It sounded like scratching. And then, a very soft, high noise.

Eeeee...

"Someone is trapped," Kael whispered. "Or something."

He looked at the huge boulder. It must have fallen during the landslide and blocked the cave entrance.

"System, Analysis," Kael commanded.

[Target: Granite Boulder.]

[Weight: Approx. 2,500 kg.]

"Two and a half tons," Kael whistled. "I'm strong, but I can't move that."

He looked at Noir. The panther was pacing back and forth. Noir didn't look like he wanted to fight. He looked curious.

"Noir," Kael said seriously. "Do you think we can move this?"

Noir looked at the rock, then at Kael. He let out a breath. 'I can move it easily. But you should help so you feel useful.'

"Okay. Let's try," Kael said.

Kael found a long, strong Ironwood log nearby. He used his creation skill to make a metal tip for it.

"System, Create: Steel Pry Bar Tip."

[Cost: 8 Mana.]

He put the metal tip on the log and jammed it under the boulder.

"Okay, Noir. I'm going to pry. You push. On three."

Kael put his shoulder under the log. He used his breathing technique to strengthen his body.

"One... Two... THREE!"

Kael pushed with everything he had. The log creaked. The huge rock moved a tiny bit.

"PUSH!"

Noir roared. The panther slammed his shoulder into the stone.

CRACK.

The boulder slid sideways like it was on wheels. It rolled away from the cliff wall.

Kael dropped the log, breathing hard. "We... did it."

Noir shook his fur, looking bored.

Kael grabbed a torch from his bag and lit it.

"Hello?" Kael called out. "Is anyone there?"

The light shined into the dark cave.

In the back corner, shaking in fear, was a shape.

It wasn't a bear. It wasn't a goblin.

It was a spider. A huge spider, the size of a small car. It was covered in soft, white fur. It had eight big black eyes that blinked in the light.

But the spider wasn't attacking. It was covering its face with its front legs, trying to hide. It was shaking violently.

"System, Analysis," Kael commanded.

[Analysis Complete.]

[Target: Weaver Arachnid (Variant).]

[Level: ???]

[Status: Starving, Dehydrated, Trapped.]

"Question marks?" Kael thought. "It must be higher than Level 20. But it looks so scared."

Kael lowered his axe.

"Oh," Kael whispered gently. "You're not a monster. You're just a scared little thing."

Noir walked in. He sniffed the spider's leg, then sat down. He looked at Kael.

Kael smiled. "It seems we found a neighbor."
