Chapter 38: The First Day of Death and the War of Souls

The Slow Hours in Hell

The first day in the Cemetery of Shadows began—a graveyard filled with thousands of dead souls killed by Liva's mother and Morgana. After extracting their souls, they eat the bodies as if eating animal meat, but in reality, they eat human flesh. The air was so hot and heavy that Rina felt her lungs were burning; a very hot wind moved in and out of her chest, so scorching it felt as if her body was catching fire. Morgana and Liva's mother sat at a distance, looking greedily at the chain that bound Rina and Diari together. The red chain had now turned into a dark purple, a sign that it was sucking the very last drops of Rina and Diari's power.

The Nightmare of Shadows

Morgana began casting spells again to torture Rina and Diari. This spell made the lost souls start dragging Rina and Diari toward the underground. Rina felt the cold hands of the dead pulling them toward the graves. Morgana said with a laugh: "Rina, these are your new friends. They only want one thing: the light within your blood. Rest assured, if you don't give it to them, your eyes will be closed by tonight. Bye-bye, dead one!"

The Peak of Diari's Weakness

Diari could no longer lift his head; his pains were increasing more and more, becoming unbearable. The chain had drained so much of his strength that his heartbeat was very faint. At that moment, Liva slowly walked toward Diari, moving her dagger back and forth across his arm, saying: "See, Diari? Even light dies here. You are just a stinking body tied to Rina. If I tell you that Rina now wishes for death so she and her father can be saved, and for you to die here and become our food—keep that in your mind, Rina hates you very much." Diari only looked at her with half-closed eyes; he knew Liva was lying, but the pain was so intense that he was almost losing his mind.

A Different Whisper Within the Earth

While Rina was surrendering to those cold hands dragging them toward the grave, a very strange sound came from the depths of the earth. She heard a low and different voice—a voice that was not like the lost souls, but a voice full of wisdom saying: "True blood does not get lost within the soil... call it... call the White Shadows." Rina realized that Liva's mother and Morgana had made a very big mistake; there was a chance that worse things would happen to them, not to Rina and her group, because they had brought Rina to the place where the "Ancestors of the Mark" were buried.

End of the Chapter: Waiting for a Darker Night

The night was coming to an end. Morgana said to Liva's mother: "The first night is over, the mark hasn't appeared yet, but their resistance is breaking. Tomorrow, on the second day, I will make them wish for death themselves." Liva's mother replied: "Tomorrow will be a very good day; we will have much work to do, cleaning their meat so we can enjoy eating it, Morgana, Hahaha!" Amidst her pains, Rina held Diari's hand tightly and said in her heart: "The second day will be a day of fear for you... I heard a voice, a voice that you are afraid of."
