Chapter 30 - The Garnishment of Grace

The morning after the Obsidian Exchange was not met with a hangover of guilt, but with the crisp, digital chime of a successful synchronization.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION] [Ledger of the First Default: INTEGRATED.] [New Passive Ability: Market Manipulation (Lv. 1)] [Effect: You can now perceive the 'Interest Rates' of all entities within 50 meters.]

Kaelen sat in the meditation gardens of the Golden Leaf Academy, a place of floating fountains and white lilies that cost more to maintain than a village's annual harvest. He wasn't meditating. He was watching the "Golden Guard"—the High Priestess's personal detachment of paladins—as they marched through the campus.

To the common eye, they were paragons of light. To Kaelen's updated vision, they were walking, breathing high-interest loans.

[TARGET: Captain Valerius (Golden Guard)] [CURRENT DEBT: 1,200,000 KP (Equipment Lease / Divine Favor)] [INTEREST RATE: 12% Per Annum (Compounded Daily)]

"They don't even own their own armor," Kaelen whispered, a thin smile touching his lips. "The Church leases them their 'Holiness' at a premium."

Alaric stood behind him, his hood up. The Error-Knight was more stable today, his flickering skin replaced by a dull, matte black that seemed to drink the morning sunlight.

"The President is watching from the balcony," Alaric rasped, his voice still carrying that slight digital distortion. "She's been there for an hour. She knows you're a glitch, Kaelen."

"Let her watch," Kaelen said, standing up and smoothing his pristine white robes. "Today, we aren't just students. We're debt collectors."

He began to walk toward the main gates, where the Golden Guard was conducting a 'Random Audit' of the student body—a fancy term for shaking down the children of lesser nobles for "Purity Offerings."

"Saint Kaelen!" Captain Valerius called out, his silver-plated visor lifting. "A blessing to see you. We were just ensuring the spiritual health of the Academy remains... profitable."

"Indeed, Captain," Kaelen said, his [False Saint's Halo] pulsing with a humble, golden warmth. "But I noticed something. Your armor... it seems to be losing its luster. The mana-conductors are frayed. Are you behind on your 'Grace Maintenance' fees?"

The Captain's smile faltered. "That is... internal Church business, Saint."

"It's everyone's business when the protectors of the faith are being overcharged," Kaelen said, stepping into the Captain's personal space. He reached out and tapped the Captain's breastplate with his cane.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Debt Restructuring (Lv. 1)] [Target: Captain Valerius.] [Action: Interest Rate Hijack.]

"The Church charges you 12%," Kaelen whispered, his eyes flashing violet behind a mask of pity. "I can offer you 5%. And I'll consolidate your 'Divine Favor' loans into a single, manageable payment plan."

[WARNING!] [Unauthorized Financial Advice Detected.] [System Integrity: STABLE (Masking as a 'Miracle').]

Valerius gasped. He felt the crushing weight of his spiritual debt—the heavy, cold pressure that had sat on his chest for a decade—suddenly lift. His armor didn't just glow; it purred.

"How... what did you do?" the Captain stammered.

"I simply performed a 'Financial Healing'," Kaelen said loudly, so the surrounding students could hear. "Why should a servant of the Light suffer under the weight of usury? Your debt is now owed to the Sovereign's Ledger. Be at peace, Captain."

[NOTIFICATION] [New Debtor Acquired: Captain Valerius.] [Benefit: You now own 15% of the Captain's 'Combat Experience' as Daily Interest.] [Kaelen's Daily Tax Progress: 1,800/2,500 KP (Garnished from Valerius).]

The other guards looked at their Captain, seeing him radiate a level of power he hadn't possessed in years. They didn't see a scam; they saw a Saint who could literally "forgive" the debt that kept them enslaved to the High Priestess.

"Me too!" one guard shouted, dropping to his knees. "Saint Kaelen, my family's tithe-debt... it's drowning us!"

"And mine!" another cried.

Within minutes, the "Golden Guard" was no longer the High Priestess's muscle. They were Kaelen's first "Shareholders."

High on the balcony, Seraphina van Draken watched the scene. She didn't see a miracle. She saw a man stealing an army by refinancing their souls.

"He isn't just a fraud," she whispered, her grip tightening on the stone railing until it cracked. "He's a rival bank."

Kaelen looked up at her and offered a polite, humble bow.

[VOLUME 3: THE HOSTILE TAKEOVER] [PHASE 1: Hostile Acquisition of the Guard — SUCCESSFUL.]

"Alaric," Kaelen said, his voice cold and focused. "Tell the Headmaster I'll be late for History class. I have a lot of paperwork to process."

Kaelen has just 'purchased' the loyalty of the city's elite guards by restructuring their divine debt. He is building a shadow-bank inside the Academy, and the High Priestess has no idea her assets are being liquidated from the bottom up.
