[Chapter 98: Upgrade]
The Slender Man was dead, and Amy and Erin, the two sisters, were already well on their way to recovery. Daniel used his magic power, and their eyelids fluttered as they slowly woke.
A look of confusion first crossed their faces, but as they saw the thick fog dissipate and Daniel standing before them, hope instantly filled their eyes.
Erin was the first to rise, pulling her sister Amy up as she asked, "Mr. Cross, that Slender Man, is he really gone?"
Daniel examined their faces carefully. Under his Spiritual Perception Technique, the deadly aura that had clung to them was completely gone.
He smiled faintly. "You don't need to worry anymore. I've already taken care of him."
"Really?" Their faces lit up with joyous smiles.
"Yes, really."
"That's wonderful!"
The two sisters cheered, hugging each other before Amy quickly rushed inside. "Dad! Mom! I'm not going to die! Mr. Cross killed the Slender Man! I'm going to live!"
"Is that true?" Mr. and Mrs. Bane hurried out at full speed, grabbing Amy's shoulders, their anxiety melting into relief.
Once they heard the confirmation, their faces blossomed with excitement. Soon, the whole family was sobbing and laughing as they embraced.
A cough from Daniel pulled their attention, and they parted to approach him.
"Mr. Cross, thank you so much for saving Amy and Erin," the couple said sincerely, eyes shining with heartfelt gratitude.
Daniel nodded. "It was their destiny not to die, and the fact that you found me was fate. It's late, I should be heading back."
Bane nodded understandingly. "Please wait just a moment."
Before long, Daniel found a check for $80,000 in his hands. Bane had handed it over without hesitation; to him, this was the best money ever spent.
Mrs. Bane invited, "It's late, Mr. Cross. Why don't you stay another night?"
Daniel declined politely, "No need. It's not far from here."
"But driving at night isn't very safe. You know how the public safety is in Los Angeles," Bane warned.
Daniel smiled calmly, "That misfortune will be theirs."
Amidst the Bane family's profuse thanks, Daniel slid behind the wheel of his Cadillac and headed home.
Nothing happened during Daniel's drive home.
Logging into the System, Daniel saw 314,400 Merit Points staring back at him.
He smiled.
"Upgrade!"
