Daniel stood there sputtering, "Mom, seriously? You're hugging him more than me these days," but she just shushed him and kept holding me until I pulled back, wiping my eyes quick so neither of them saw how bad it hit.
The rest of the night was her making us tea and forcing us to sit on the couch while she lectured Daniel about being a better husband, me chiming in with little jabs like "Yeah, listen to your mom, she knows you're a pain," and him grumbling back but not fighting too hard because she had that mom glare locked on. By the time we went to bed in separate rooms, thank god I was exhausted but smiling a tiny bit because damn, having a mom like that? It felt good. Too good. Made the fake wedding feel a little less like a cage.
