Chapter 41 - truth

Everything happened the way it was supposed to happen. Elena was indeed sacrificed. Klaus kept his promise and didn't sacrifice any vampire or any werewolf from the town. He also didn't turn Jenna like in the original series.

Damon and Stefan tried to intervene, but they couldn't—it was already too late. Klaus had already killed the werewolf and the vampire and attacked Elena. He drank her blood to the last drop.

"Aaahhhh!" he screamed in agony, then started laughing as his eyes turned yellow. "Hahahaha, I'm finally free!"

That's when a blast of energy hit him.

"Greta!" he shouted for his witch to help him, but she was quickly restrained by her brother.

Jonas Martin used all his magic to try to attack Klaus, and everyone looked on with hope when Elijah attacked him. Elijah thrust his hand into Klaus's chest and grabbed his heart.

"This is the end, brother."

He was about to pull it out when—

"Wait! It was a lie! I didn't throw our siblings' bodies into the ocean!" Klaus said desperately.

"Don't listen to him, Elijah!" Stefan shouted in anger, looking at Elena's lifeless body on the ground.

But it was too late. Before anyone could blink, Elijah had already disappeared with Klaus.

"No…" Stefan and Damon dropped to their knees.

Once again, they had been defeated.

Cough, cough.

That's when both of them looked forward and saw Elena coughing. They rushed to her.

"Elena!"

They both cried as they embraced her.

"So…" Caroline sighed. "Klaus broke the curse."

She looked at John Gilbert's dead body on the ground and began digging with a shovel.

"How deep?" Caroline asked. "Now Klaus is invincible, and he probably won't want to leave town."

"Very deep… We don't want Elena to find out her father sacrificed himself for her," Bonnie replied with a tired sigh. "Klaus is indeed invincible… but he's not more powerful."

"What do you mean?" Caroline asked, confused. "He's a hybrid now…"

"Vampires and werewolves are opposing beings," Bonnie said, summoning a book. "According to this bestiary, if a werewolf becomes a vampire, the two 'demons' destroy each other."

"And what does that mean?" Caroline asked curiously.

"It means that without those 'demons,' the werewolf side can never become an alpha, and the vampire side can never awaken vampiric magic," Bonnie said with a bright smile. "So if this theory is correct, Klaus basically castrated his own power when he broke the curse."

"Bonnie, English please," Caroline said, tired of her rambling.

"Werewolves and vampires are opposites. Vampires are extremely vulnerable to werewolf venom, even though they're immune to almost every other poison or disease. And werewolves are vulnerable to vampiric magic, despite having one of the highest magical resistances," Bonnie explained with a sigh. "Basically, Klaus's wolf and vampire sides had to suppress themselves to avoid destroying each other. Did he become physically stronger? Yes. But mystically… he castrated himself."

"So in the end, even losing, we won?" Caroline threw her hands up.

"In a way, yes," Bonnie replied with a small smile.

"But he's an Original and a regular wolf. Shouldn't his vampire side destroy the wolf side easily?" Caroline asked.

"Yes… and that's why I interfered. The magic he used to protect himself when he was in Alaric's body—I transferred that to his wolf side."

"Why would you do that?" Caroline asked, completely shocked.

"God forgive me, but have you seen the abomination that Nik is? He might be my brother/cousin, and I love him…" Bonnie said sincerely. "But have you seen how powerful he is with magic? He's literally a magical bomb. He might be a child of the Ancestor, but having that much magical power… it's not normal. And he's Klaus's son."

"So you're saying that maybe Nik's vampire side absorbed his werewolf side?" Caroline asked, surprised.

"No… I think his witch side absorbed the wolf side, since it was the only one that was always active," Bonnie said calmly. "That's why his witch magic is so wild—and so compatible with his vampiric magic."

Caroline stayed silent for a few seconds, trying to put everything together.

"So… Nik isn't just powerful… he's been unstable since birth?"

Bonnie nodded slowly.

"He never had a clear separation between his sides. While Klaus was forcibly divided… Nik was born… fused."

Caroline ran a hand over her face.

"That's worse."

"Much worse," Bonnie replied without hesitation.

"Because Klaus still has internal conflict… Nik doesn't. For him, all of this is natural."

She took a deep breath.

"His magic doesn't need balance… because he's never known imbalance."

That's when both of them felt a presence.

"It's Nik… he's back!" Caroline shouted happily, jumping in excitement.
