Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 18: "What the Review Started"
Amara's POV
"He hasn't said anything yet," Rose murmured.
I rocked the baby gently against my shoulder while watching Luke through the kitchen window.
He moved normally.
Cooked normally.
Spoke normally.
But I knew him now.
And Luke Bennett only got that quiet when his mind was carrying something heavy.
Across the restaurant Marcus was arguing with a customer again.
"I'm telling you," Marcus said dramatically, "extra caramel absolutely counts as emotional healing."
Carl walked past him carrying plates.
"You say that about everything."
"Because healing matters, Carl."
Normal.
The restaurant looked normal.
But underneath it…
Everything had shifted after the review dropped that morning.
Julian Cross's article had spread through the city like wildfire.
Not just good.
Historic.
"One restaurant impresses. The other reminds you why people gather around tables in the first place."
That line alone had people quoting the article everywhere.
Reservations exploded.
Customers lined up outside before opening.
Even the staff from neighboring businesses came in just to "see the place everybody was talking about."
And across the street?
Hale Signature looked beautiful.
Expensive.
Full.
But quieter tonight.
Not defeated.
Just shaken.
Because the city had chosen a favorite.
Rose closed the tablet in front of her.
"The review changed everything."
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
But my eyes drifted toward the corner booth near the back.
Toward Adrian.
He had arrived an hour ago.
And hadn't left.
Adrian Cole.
Another man from Luke's old world.
Another ghost.
Only this one felt different.
Calmer.
More dangerous somehow.
Not loud like Evan.
Not polished like Daniel Kessler.
Adrian sat quietly watching the restaurant like he was studying Luke's entire life from a distance.
The baby stirred softly in my arms.
Rose noticed me looking.
"He's waiting."
"I know."
"Luke's waiting too."
I looked back toward the kitchen.
Luke glanced toward Adrian for half a second.
Then back to work.
Avoiding the conversation.
Marcus finally wandered over carrying a coffee pot.
"Okay," he whispered dramatically, "I've officially decided Booth Guy is suspicious."
Rose sighed.
"Marcus."
"No seriously," Marcus continued quietly. "He's been nursing the same coffee for an hour."
Carl joined us.
"That's because he didn't come for coffee."
Marcus blinked.
"You think he came for violence?"
Carl stared at him.
"No."
Marcus shrugged.
"Worth asking."
The restaurant door opened again.
A rush of customers entered laughing loudly about the review article.
One woman pointed toward Luke in the kitchen.
"That's him."
Another whispered,
"The chef from the article."
Luke noticed immediately.
I saw it in the way his shoulders tightened.
Attention still made him uncomfortable.
Rose saw it too.
"He's not used to being admired."
Marcus snorted.
"He should practice."
Then Adrian finally stood.
The entire room felt it.
Even before he spoke.
Luke slowly looked up from the kitchen.
And just like that.
The past stood up and walked toward him.
Marcus whispered,
"Oh boy."
Adrian stopped near the kitchen entrance.
For a second neither man spoke.
Then Adrian nodded once.
"Still cooking under pressure."
Luke's voice stayed even.
"Still showing up uninvited."
Marcus quietly leaned toward Rose.
"Okay wow. Tension."
Rose folded her arms.
"Shh."
Adrian looked around the restaurant carefully.
"You built something good here."
Luke wiped his hands slowly on a towel.
"What do you want, Adrian?"
Straight to it.
No pretending.
Adrian's eyes shifted briefly toward me.
Toward the baby.
Toward the life around Luke now.
Then back to Luke.
"You've changed."
Luke answered quietly,
"Yes."
Adrian nodded slightly.
"I can see that."
Marcus whispered,
"Why does this feel like two ex-generals meeting after a war?"
Carl muttered,
"Because it kind of is."
Adrian finally sat at the counter.
Luke stayed standing.
Neither looked comfortable.
Rose moved closer beside me.
"She said his name earlier."
"Who?"
"Margaret."
I frowned slightly.
"What about him?"
Rose lowered her voice.
"He was one of the only people who sided with Luke after the deal collapsed."
That surprised me.
"He supported Luke?"
Rose nodded slowly.
"But something happened between them after."
Before I could ask more
Adrian spoke again.
"I read the review."
Luke stayed quiet.
Adrian continued.
"The city loves you now."
Marcus whispered proudly,
"As they should."
Adrian ignored the interruption.
"But admiration changes quickly."
Luke met his gaze.
"You didn't come here to discuss restaurant reviews."
"No."
Adrian leaned back slightly.
"I came because Hale Urban Developments is preparing something."
That got everyone's attention.
Carl straightened immediately.
"What kind of something?"
Adrian looked at Luke only.
"They're buying surrounding properties."
Rose frowned.
"Around the restaurant?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus blinked.
"Wait."
Carl understood first.
"They're trying to isolate the block."
Rose's expression darkened.
"Pressure strategy."
Luke finally moved from behind the counter.
"What's the endgame?"
Adrian answered quietly.
"Force you to expand under them or drown competing beside them."
Marcus pointed across the street.
"I knew Airport Food Lady was evil."
Rose ignored him.
"Why tell us?"
Adrian looked at Luke for a long moment before answering.
"Because you were right."
The restaurant quieted again.
Luke didn't react immediately.
Adrian continued.
"Years ago."
"The deal."
"You were right to walk away."
Luke's expression tightened slightly.
"That's not what you said back then."
"No."
Adrian looked down briefly.
"Back then I cared more about winning than consequences."
Marcus whispered,
"Corporate therapy session."
Carl elbowed him.
Adrian looked around the restaurant again.
"At the time I thought you threw your future away."
His eyes landed on the baby in my arms.
"Now I think you found it."
Silence.
Heavy.
Real.
Luke crossed his arms.
"You didn't drive across the city just to apologize."
Adrian almost smiled.
"No."
Then his expression turned serious again.
"Hale is planning a massive expansion announcement next month."
Rose frowned.
"How massive?"
Adrian answered quietly.
"They want to own this entire district."
Marcus nearly dropped the coffee pot.
"THIS district?"
Carl muttered,
"That would destroy independent businesses."
Rose nodded slowly.
"And make them untouchable."
Luke looked toward the front windows.
Toward the neighborhood outside.
The local bakery.
The bookstore.
The tiny family-owned florist.
Places that had existed long before Hale arrived.
Adrian's voice lowered.
"They think if they bury you publicly… the rest will follow."
Luke looked back at him.
"And you're helping me because?"
Adrian answered honestly.
"Because I watched what happened after you left."
Luke stayed silent.
Adrian continued.
"The people who stayed became worse."
That line sat heavy between them.
Years of regret packed inside one sentence.
The baby suddenly made a tiny sleepy sound in my arms.
Adrian looked toward him.
Then toward Luke.
"You really love them."
Luke didn't answer immediately.
But when he finally spoke…
His voice was quieter than before.
"Yes."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"That's why you'll survive this."
Marcus whispered dramatically,
"I'm emotional now."
Rose shook her head.
"Of course you are."
Luke leaned against the counter.
"What exactly are you offering?"
Adrian reached into his coat slowly.
Carl immediately stiffened.
Marcus whispered,
"If that's a weapon I'm quitting."
Adrian pulled out a folder.
Documents.
Maps.
Property acquisition plans.
Rose's eyes widened immediately.
"Oh my God."
Carl leaned over her shoulder.
"Hale's buying pattern."
Adrian nodded.
"I copied everything before leaving."
Marcus blinked.
"You left?"
Adrian looked at Luke.
"This morning."
Luke studied him carefully.
"You walked away."
Adrian gave a faint humorless laugh.
"Guess you finally rubbed off on me."
For the first time all night…
Luke smiled.
Small.
Real.
And in that moment
I realized something important.
The past wasn't just returning to challenge Luke anymore.
Now…
It was returning to follow him.
And somehow that felt even bigger.
Because people didn't walk away from power for weak men.
They walked away for men who changed them.
Luke looked down at the folder again.
Then around the restaurant.
The life.
The people.
The family is growing around him.
And softly almost to himself he said,
"Then we fight smart."
Marcus immediately raised a coffee mug.
"To smart fighting."
Carl smirked.
Rose smiled faintly.
And outside the restaurant windows…
The city lights glowed across both restaurants.
One built on image.
One built on people.
The war for the neighborhood had officially begun.
