The sky cracked open right after lunch.
Not dramatic thunder—just a sudden, heavy downpour that turned the school grounds into a gray blur. Students scrambled indoors, laughing and cursing the weather. Windows fogged. Hallways filled with the smell of wet uniforms and cheap cafeteria food.
I stayed in the classroom longer than necessary.
Most of the class had cleared out for club activities or the shelter of the library. Aira was gone early—something about meeting friends at a nearby café. Kenji had mumbled about band practice and vanished.
Just me, the rain drumming on the roof, and the low static that refused to leave.
I sat at my desk, staring at the rain-streaked window. Droplets raced each other down the glass. One would win, merge with another, grow bigger, then disappear at the sill.
Pointless motion.
The static pulsed once—soft, almost thoughtful.
I didn't react.
I was getting used to it. Not comfortable. Just… accustomed. Like living with a low-grade headache that never quite goes away.
Footsteps in the hallway.
Slow. Deliberate.
Not a student rushing.
I turned my head slightly.
The door slid open halfway.
Jiji—Jin Enjoji—stood there.
Tall for his age, messy hair, easy smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. He was in the same year, different class. I'd seen him in passing: always with a group, always laughing a little too loud, always carrying that faint aura of someone who'd seen things most people hadn't.
He leaned against the doorframe, hands in pockets.
"You're the new guy, right? Haruto?"
I nodded slowly. "Yeah."
"Jiji." He gave a small wave. "Heard you've been… interesting lately."
"Interesting how?"
He shrugged. "People talk. You swatted something invisible in class. Tripped weirdly in PE. Looked like you were running from your own shadow yesterday after school."
I kept my face neutral. "Rumors travel fast."
"Especially when they're true." He stepped inside, slid the door shut behind him. The rain noise muffled slightly. "Relax. I'm not here to grill you."
"Then why?"
He walked over to the window, looked out at the rain. "I get feelings sometimes. Bad ones. Like when something's watching. Or waiting."
He turned back to me.
"You've got that smell on you right now. Not yokai stink exactly. Something… borrowed."
My pulse kicked up a notch.
He noticed.
"Don't freak. I'm not gonna rat you out or anything. I just… notice things. And lately, I've noticed you noticing things."
I studied him. No hostility. No mockery. Just quiet curiosity.
"You've seen stuff too?" I asked carefully.
Jiji laughed—short, self-deprecating. "More than I'd like. Let's just say I've had my share of bad nights."
Silence for a beat.
The rain kept falling.
He rubbed the back of his neck. "Look. If something's tailing you… don't ignore it. But don't go looking for it either. That's how people end up in deeper shit."
"Sound advice," I said dryly.
"Yeah, well. I learned it the hard way." He glanced toward the door. "Anyway. Just thought I'd say hi. You seem like the type who might need a heads-up before things get weird."
"They're already weird."
He grinned—real this time. "Welcome to Kamigoe."
He slid the door open again.
Paused.
"One more thing."
"Yeah?"
"If you ever feel like your shadow's not yours anymore… come find me. Or Momo. Or Okarun. We're not exactly normal either."
He left before I could respond.
The door clicked shut.
I sat there listening to the rain.

The system didn't mock me this time.
It just noted the fact.
Like it was keeping score for something bigger.
I stood up slowly.
Packed my bag.
The rain showed no sign of stopping.
I stepped into the hallway.
Empty.
Quiet.
But no longer lonely.
Someone else had noticed.
And in this city, being noticed was the first step toward being hunted.
Or maybe—maybe—being helped.
I pulled up my hood and stepped out into the downpour.
The static followed.
Calmer now.
Almost… approving.
