Chapter 21 - Chapter 20 – Thursday’s Soft Light, A Shared Flash at Dusk, and the Static That Whispers ‘Almost’

Thursday morning felt like the city had finally exhaled.

The rain had stopped sometime in the night, leaving behind a clean, cool air that smelled faintly of wet leaves and distant salt from the bay.

Sunlight came through the shutters in thin, pale bars—no harsh glare, just gentle warmth.

I woke slowly.

No alarm needed.

The resonance was already humming—quiet, steady, like Aira had been awake for a while and the thread between us had simply carried the fact across town.

Seiko was in the kitchen for once—rare mid-week appearance.

She stood at the stove flipping tamagoyaki, cigarette unlit between her lips like a placeholder.

"Morning," she said without turning.

"Morning."

She slid a plate across the counter—two perfect golden rolls, miso soup steaming beside them.

"Eat. You're starting to look less like a ghost."

I sat.

Picked up chopsticks.

She leaned against the counter, arms crossed.

"Resonance still calm?"

"Yeah. No spikes. Just… there."

She nodded once.

"Good. Means whatever's watching is taking a breather. Or sizing you both up properly before the next poke."

I swallowed a bite of tamagoyaki—fluffy, slightly sweet.

"Any advice for when it stops breathing?"

Seiko finally lit the cigarette.

Inhaled deeply.

"Stay together. Don't isolate. Resonance is strongest when you're close. Distance weakens it. And when the poke comes… don't try to fight it alone. Let it bleed both ways. Share the hit."

She exhaled smoke toward the ceiling.

"Pink-hair's tougher than she looks. But she's not invincible. Neither are you."

I finished the meal in silence.

Seiko watched me the whole time.

When I stood to leave she spoke again—quieter.

"If you get a flash today that feels too real… text her immediately. Don't wait for the aftershock."

I nodded.

Grabbed my bag.

Stepped out into the clean Thursday light.

---

School arrived without drama.

Aira was already at her desk when I entered—textbook open, but eyes on the window.

She looked up the moment the resonance tugged.

Small smile.

Small nod.

We didn't speak much during classes.

The resonance carried the small things:

- A flicker of her boredom during history lecture.

- A pulse of my quiet relief when no new watcher appeared in reflections.

- A shared moment of calm when sunlight hit the desk just right.

Lunch was the same spot—oak tree, bench, no rain today.

Aira's bento: soba noodles cold, dipped in tsuyu, with tempura shrimp on the side.

She pushed the tempura toward me without asking.

I took one.

We ate listening to birds and distant school chatter.

Halfway through she spoke—voice low.

"I got a flash this morning. Walking past the station. Saw a convenience store window. Someone inside buying melon pan. Hood up. Looking tired but… steady."

I looked at her.

"That was me. 7:45. Before school."

She nodded slowly.

"The delay's shorter now. Maybe ten seconds. And it felt… warmer. Like the resonance filtered it."

The static hummed—dual, layered, almost harmonious.

I tore a piece of tempura.

"The system upgraded again last night. Said real-time emotional ping is possible now. During high-stress or focus."

Aira exhaled through her nose.

"Meaning if something bad happens… we'll feel it together. Instantly."

"Yeah."

She looked at the sky—clear blue patches breaking through clouds.

"That's both terrifying and… comforting."

We finished eating.

The sun climbed higher.

Aira packed her bento.

Stood.

"I've got club till late. But… text me when you get home tonight. Just 'home'. Nothing fancy."

I nodded.

She started walking.

Paused at the corner—routine now.

"And Haruto?"

"Yeah?"

"If you get a flash of my evening… don't overthink it. Just tell me what you saw. Even if it's boring."

Then she was gone.

---

The afternoon classes passed quietly.

After school I walked home alone—the resonance stretching thin but not breaking.

Seiko wasn't back yet.

I ate convenience store katsu curry again—sitting on the engawa this time, watching dusk settle over the garden.

Around 7:40 my phone buzzed.

Aira.

*Club done. Heading home. Static's calm. You?*

I typed back immediately:

*Home. Eating curry on the engawa. Static same. Still alive.*

A minute later:

*Good. I just walked past the shrine road. Felt you sitting there before I saw the house. Weird but… nice.*

I stared at the message.

The resonance pulsed—warm, clear.

A faint flash came through—not delayed this time.

Real-time.

Her view: shrine road at dusk, red torii gate silhouetted against orange sky, stone steps leading up, faint glow from the house windows.

And through her eyes—I saw myself sitting on the engawa, phone in hand, curry bowl balanced on my knee.

The image faded.

I exhaled slowly.

Typed:

*Got a flash. Saw myself through your eyes. Sitting here. Curry and all.*

Her reply came fast:

*Yeah. I felt you notice. Like someone waved from across the street.*

I set the phone down.

The static settled—content, almost smiling.

**Echo Evolution – resonance milestone: near real-time bidirectional visual bleed-over achieved (short-range, low-stress).**

**Moderate Emotional Resonance upgraded (+22% clarity; real-time emotional ping now stable during intentional focus; visual/auditory fragments up to 10 seconds live).**

**New passive note: Mutual resonance may create temporary 'shared vantage' effect during calm proximity states (both parties see brief glimpses of the other's immediate view).**

**Last pride status: Still attached. But pride just got seen through someone else's eyes—and it didn't feel like exposure. It felt like company.**

I finished the curry.

Watched the sky turn full dark.

Somewhere across town, Aira was doing the same.

And for the first time, the distance didn't matter quite so much.
