Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: The Aftermath.

The sun had risen fully over Mount Fuji by the time they reached the surface again.

The northern slope was quiet—too quiet. No Guild teams yet. No helicopters. Ren had kept his word: perimeter sealed, no interference. The vent entrance behind them looked like any other crack in the rock—innocent, unremarkable.

Haruto stood at the trailhead, coat dusted with ash, breathing in the cold mountain air. Miya and Yuki flanked him, silent, watching the horizon.

No purple mist.

No whispers.

No pull from the rune—because there was no rune anymore.

Haruto opened his palm one last time.

Smooth skin. Faint golden scars where the spiral had been. Nothing more.

He closed his hand.

"It's really over."

Miya exhaled—long, shaky.

"I thought… I thought we'd lose you down there."

Haruto looked at her.

"You didn't."

Yuki smirked, but his eyes were softer than usual.

"Stubborn bastard. Even gods can't kill you."

Haruto let out a quiet laugh.

They started down the trail.

Halfway, Ren's SUV waited—engine running, no driver.

A note on the dashboard:

*"Extraction complete. No traces. No reports. The Guild owes you one. – Ren"*

Miya read it aloud.

Yuki snorted.

"He's sentimental."

Haruto folded the note.

"Or pragmatic."

They drove back toward Tokyo in silence at first.

The radio played soft J-pop—normal, mundane. The world continuing as if nothing had happened.

Miya broke the quiet.

"What now? The Gates are stable. Nox is gone. The mark is gone."

Haruto stared out the window.

"We live."

Yuki raised an eyebrow.

"That's it?"

Haruto turned to them.

"No more running. No more hiding. We protect what's left. Train. Grow stronger. Because even without Nox… there are still threats. S-ranks. SS-ranks. SSS-ranks. Things we haven't seen yet."

Miya nodded slowly.

"And the divine voice? The one that brought you back?"

Haruto's expression darkened—just a fraction.

"It's still out there. Watching. Waiting for something."

He looked at his palm again.

"But for the first time… I'm not afraid of what comes next."

Yuki leaned back in the seat.

"Good. Because I'm not done kicking ass yet."

Miya smiled—small, real.

"Neither am I."

The SUV rolled into Tokyo as evening fell.

Neon lights flickered on.

The city breathed—alive, unbroken.

Haruto looked out at the skyline.

The apocalypse had ended.

But the story of the Sovereign Guardian… had only just begun.

They parked near the Nakano safehouse.

Miya turned off the engine.

"Home?"

Haruto nodded.

"For now."

They stepped out.

The door opened before they reached it.

Ren stood in the doorway—casual clothes, no suit. Purple eyes calm.

"Figured you'd come back here."

Haruto raised an eyebrow.

"You're breaking protocol."

Ren shrugged.

"I'm off-duty."

He stepped aside.

"Inside. We need to talk."

They entered.

The table was set—simple food, tea, a bottle of sake.

Ren closed the door.

"No record. No witnesses. Just us."

He looked at Haruto.

"The higher-ups want to bury this. Call it a natural stabilization. No mention of you. No records of the anchors. You disappear. Become a ghost."

Yuki laughed once.

"They're scared."

Ren nodded.

"They are. But I'm not."

He looked at the three of them.

"I want to offer something else."

Haruto waited.

Ren continued.

"A new division. Unofficial. Off the books. You three lead it. Hunt the remaining threats—corrupted Gates, rogue S-ranks, whatever comes next. Full autonomy. Guild resources when needed. No oversight."

Miya tilted her head.

"Why?"

Ren met her gaze.

"Because the world still needs guardians. And you're the best we've got."

Haruto looked at Miya and Yuki.

They nodded—once.

Haruto turned back to Ren.

"We'll think about it."

Ren smiled—small, knowing.

"Take your time."

He walked to the door.

"But don't take too long. Something tells me the quiet won't last."

The door closed behind him.

Miya looked at Haruto.

"What do you think?"

Haruto stared at the sake bottle.

Then poured three glasses.

He raised his.

"To the end of one story…"

Miya and Yuki raised theirs.

"…and the beginning of the next."

They drank.

The city lights glowed outside the window.

The Sovereign Guardian had chosen his path.

And the world—finally—had a chance to heal.
