The clearing was already ruined before the first blow landed.
Trees lay split and half-burned, their trunks crushed into the earth as if the land itself had tried to flee. The air trembled not with sound, but with pressure. Lunar energy pressed down like a second sky.
Riven stood at the center of it.
His breath came slow now, controlled. The wound Kael had given him days ago had sealed, though the memory of it still burned beneath his ribs. His Lunar Core rotated steadily within him darker than before, denser, alive with a predatory rhythm.
A Night Wolf.
Across from him, Kael Ironfang cracked his neck once, rolling his shoulders like a man preparing for routine execution rather than a fight.
"You survived ascension," Kael said calmly. "Impressive."
Riven said nothing. His eyes no longer purely silver caught the light like fractured glass, black veins threading through their glow.
Kael stepped forward.
The world exploded.
Riven moved first.
He closed the distance in a blur, foot carving a trench through stone as he pivoted low and drove his fist toward Kael's ribs. Kael blocked barely. The impact thundered outward, shockwaves snapping branches and hurling dust skyward.
Riven followed instantly: elbow, knee, heel each strike precise, brutal, efficient. No wasted movement. No flourish.
Kael was forced back.
For the first time since his introduction to the story, Kael Ironfang retreated.
Riven's claws flashed, raking across Kael's chestplate, tearing through reinforced lunar alloy. Kael grunted as blood bloomed dark against silver armor.
The watching wolves froze.
This wasn't luck.
This wasn't desperation.
Riven was winning.
Kael tried to counter with a crushing palm strike, but Riven slipped inside the blow, shoulder-checking him with Night Wolf force. Kael slammed into a boulder hard enough to shatter it.
Riven was on him instantly, fist crashing down
Kael caught it.
The ground cracked beneath their feet.
For a heartbeat, they stared at each other, strength locked. Riven's muscles screamed but held.
Kael smiled.
"So," he said softly, "this is what the Blood Moon is grooming."
Then his aura changed.
It wasn't explosive. It didn't roar.
It descended.
The pressure doubled. Then tripled.
The air bent inward toward Kael as silver-white lunar energy poured out of him, flooding the clearing like a rising tide.
Alpha Candidate Domain: Iron Sovereignty.
The ground bowed.
Riven was forced back as Kael stood, fully upright now, arms slightly spread, lunar aura spiraling violently around him.
"This," Kael said, voice echoing unnaturally, "is the difference between ascension and authority."
Kael vanished.
Riven barely raised his guard before Kael's fist smashed into his ribs. Bone cracked. Riven flew skidding across the ground, carving a furrow before crashing into a fallen tree.
Kael didn't let up.
He appeared above Riven, heel descending like a meteor. Riven rolled, the impact pulverizing the earth where his head had been.
Riven rose, blood at his mouth, and struck back
Kael caught his arm and twisted.
The sound was sickening.
Riven screamed as Kael drove a knee into his stomach, then another into his chest. Riven collapsed, coughing blood.
Kael lifted him by the throat.
"You climbed too fast," Kael snarled now, rage bleeding through his composure. "And now you fall."
He hurled Riven aside.
The pack moved.
Nyss shouted Riven's name as three Night Wolves charged Kael together. Lunar techniques ignited blades, chains, compressed strikes
Kael turned.
One swing.
A single, wide arc of lunar force erupted from his arm.
All three wolves were struck mid-charge and obliterated from the air, their bodies slamming into the ground unconscious, bleeding, unmoving.
Silence fell.
Riven pushed himself up on shaking arms.
He saw them.
His pack.
Broken.
Still.
Something inside him shifted.
Not power.
Restraint.
The Lunar Core within him shuddered violently. Cracks spread across its surface not glowing, not ascending but splintering.
Kael felt it and frowned. "What are you"
The night screamed.
Dark energy poured from Riven like smoke from a collapsing star. The moonlight above fractured, shadows stretching unnaturally long as the ground blackened beneath his feet.
Riven rose slowly.
His eyes were no longer silver.
They were void.
Night Wolf Domain: Black Howl.
It wasn't structured like Kael's. It had no order, no symmetry.
It was rage given shape.
Riven vanished and Kael barely blocked in time as claws tore across his chest, ripping armor apart. Kael staggered, shocked.
Riven hit him again.
And again.
And again.
Each blow carried dark lunar force that corroded Kael's aura, disrupting Iron Sovereignty. Kael roared, trying to reinforce his domain, but Riven was relentless feral, berserk.
Kael struck back with a full-force Alpha blow
Riven took it head-on.
The impact shattered the ground, but Riven didn't fall. He grabbed Kael's arm and bit down, fangs tearing into flesh infused with lunar authority.
Kael screamed.
Riven slammed him into the ground repeatedly, dark energy detonating with each impact. Kael's domain flickered, cracked, collapsed.
Riven raised his claws to finish it.
Nyss moved.
Lunar chains erupted from her hands, glowing blue-white as they wrapped around Riven's limbs, chest, and neck. The contact burned but held.
"RIVEN!" she screamed. "LOOK AT ME!"
Riven turned.
His claws trembled inches from her face.
Nyss's eyes burned with focus as she activated her technique fully Lunar Chain Reversal, forcing resonance between her core and his fractured one.
"Come back," she whispered. "You're not alone."
The dark energy convulsed.
Riven screamed a sound of pain, fury, grief and then collapsed to his knees as the chains tightened and the fractured core stabilized.
The darkness withdrew.
The night breathed again.
Kael lay broken, unconscious, breathing but defeated.
Riven fell forward, caught by Nyss before he hit the ground.
The Blood Moon above dimmed slightly.
Watching.
Waiting.
And the war had only just begun.
