Chapter 77 - Approach to the Fourth Capital.

Night did not feel like safety anymore.

Not in these lands.

It felt like concealment temporary, fragile, always on the edge of being torn open.

Riven moved through it anyway.

The wind dragged cold fingers across the broken terrain as the small group advanced in silence. Astra led slightly ahead, her staff low, its faint runes dimmed to near invisibility. Eryx followed behind her, his presence heavy but controlled like a blade kept sheathed, but never relaxed.

And Riven…

Riven felt every step.

Not just his own.

Everything.

The land itself seemed different the closer they got to the Fourth's territory. The air carried a pressure that wasn't physical, but instinctual like the world was being watched.

He tightened his grip slightly.

Twin blades strapped at his sides.

Still.

Ready.

Astra didn't look back as she spoke quietly.

"We're close."

Eryx gave a low hum in response, eyes scanning the horizon.

Riven didn't speak.

He was listening to something else.

Something deeper.

A faint pull inside his core.

Not pain.

Not rage.

Recognition.

He frowned slightly.

"…Do you feel that?" he asked.

Astra slowed just enough for him to hear her voice clearly.

"Yes," she replied simply.

Eryx's eyes narrowed.

"That's the barrier system," he said. "Fourth Capital's outer seal. It reacts to unstable cores."

Riven exhaled slowly.

"My core isn't unstable," he muttered.

Astra glanced at him briefly.

"It's not judging stability," she said. "It's judging difference."

That made Riven quiet.

Difference.

His existence had been "difference" since the moment his second energy awakened.

Night Wolf energy was standard.

Ranked.

Understood.

But the dark energy

It didn't belong anywhere.

And the closer they got to the capital, the more it seemed to respond.

Like it was remembering something.

Or being remembered.

Eryx stopped walking.

A hand rose slightly.

Instantly, the group halted.

Ahead of them, the terrain dipped into a narrow valley of broken stone and dead grass. At its center was something almost invisible at first glance

A thin shimmer in the air.

A boundary.

A seal.

Astra stepped closer, her staff lightly tapping the ground once.

The runes along its surface flickered.

"…Barrier density is high," she murmured. "They've upgraded it recently."

Eryx's expression darkened slightly.

"That means they're expecting trouble."

Riven's gaze stayed fixed on the shimmering field.

"It doesn't feel like a wall," he said quietly.

Astra turned slightly toward him.

"What does it feel like?"

Riven hesitated.

"…Like something is looking back."

Silence followed that.

Even Eryx didn't immediately respond.

Then he exhaled through his nose.

"Welcome to the Fourth."

The Capital Beyond the Seal

They crossed at night.

Not by force.

Not by breaking.

But by slipping through a gap Astra found an instability in the barrier's lower weave, likely caused by old infrastructure beneath the capital.

Astra guided them through it carefully, suppressing the energy ripple as much as possible.

For a moment

Everything went still.

Then the world shifted.

They emerged into shadowed stone corridors beneath the city.

The air was different here.

Heavier.

Controlled.

Riven looked up slightly.

Above them, faint light filtered through drainage grates and architectural seams. The capital existed overhead massive, structured, and alive with order.

Eryx crouched slightly, placing a hand against the stone wall.

"This is it," he muttered. "Underground network."

Astra nodded.

"From here, we split paths."

Riven's eyes sharpened.

Eryx looked at him directly.

"You're not coming with us all the way," he said.

Riven frowned. "Why?"

"Because you're the one they're going to notice first if things go wrong."

That wasn't an insult.

It was fact.

Astra stepped forward slightly.

"I'll suppress detection routes and ward signals," she said. "Eryx will handle patrol interference."

Then she looked at Riven.

"You go straight to your clan."

Riven nodded once.

"…Nyss too."

Eryx's jaw tightened slightly at that name, but he said nothing.

Instead

He stepped forward.

"Listen carefully," Eryx said.

Riven met his gaze.

"If you lose control in there… you don't just risk the mission."

A pause.

"You risk starting a war inside the capital."

Riven didn't respond immediately.

Then

"I know."

Eryx studied him for a long moment.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

He stepped back.

Astra placed a hand briefly on Riven's shoulder.

Not heavy.

Not emotional.

Grounding.

"Stay aware of yourself," she said quietly.

Riven gave a small nod.

Then she removed her hand.

And the three separated.

Inside the Fourth Capital

The moment Riven moved alone, everything changed.

Silence felt louder.

His senses sharpened.

Every drop of water echoing through the tunnels.

Every distant footstep above.

Every faint pulse of energy woven into the city's structure.

He moved carefully.

Controlled.

But the closer he got to the upper districts, the more the feeling returned.

That strange pull.

His core reacted subtly again.

Dark energy…

Not rising.

Not spilling.

But aware.

Like it knew where it was.

Riven frowned slightly.

"That's not normal," he muttered under his breath.

Then

He stopped.

Ahead, voices.

"…They moved the prisoners again."

"…Fourth Commander wants tighter surveillance."

"…Especially the girl Nyss. She's unstable."

Riven's eyes narrowed instantly.

He pressed himself against the wall, listening.

Nyss.

Close.

He exhaled slowly.

Control.

Focus.

Then he moved again.

Deep in the Capital Lower Holding District

The lower district was quieter.

Not peaceful.

Controlled quiet.

Guards stood at intervals, but not aggressively more like they trusted the system itself to do the watching.

That was the difference in the Fourth.

Order didn't need chaos.

It just needed structure.

Riven slipped between shadows, avoiding light pools and patrol rotations.

Then

He felt it.

A presence.

Familiar.

His steps slowed.

His breath tightened slightly.

There.

Ahead.

A sealed section of reinforced stone and energy locks.

And beyond it

Nyss.

Riven placed a hand against the wall.

His voice barely audible.

"…I'm here."

Inside, something shifted.

Not sound.

Not movement.

Recognition.
