Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The First Signs of Ability

After Zhang Wei and the nurse left, Ye Fan rested on the hospital bed for a while. Suddenly, he felt an itch around his eyes, which were wrapped in gauze, like the feeling when an injury is healing. It started mildly but gradually intensified, making him want to scratch it hard.

Ye Fan tried to find the call button by the bed to have the nurse check if his condition had worsened, so he reached out and groped around.

After groping in the dark for a while, he not only couldn't find the call button but also fell off the bed, landing in a daze.

"What's going on?" Knowing he might lose his sight and even be disfigured, this sudden itching filled Ye Fan with worry, even terror. He was in his early twenties, in the prime of his youth, the best years of his life.

Ye Fan struggled to his feet, clenching his fists tightly. He was now facing a life in darkness and needed to adapt.

Ye Fan stood up, supporting himself on the edge of the bed. Just as he was about to return to his bed, he felt a sharp pain in his eyes, like being pricked by needles, as if something was irritating them. Ye Fan thought the gauze was too tight and reached out to loosen it.

After pulling three times, Ye Fan realized something was wrong. When he was first injured, even the slightest movement, let alone pulling the gauze, would cause excruciating pain, but now he didn't feel that way. Since the doctor had already said he was blind, Ye Fan steeled himself and began to pull the gauze off.

As the gauze was peeled off layer by layer, it went smoothly at first, but by the last layer, stained with blood and clotted, it had hardened. Ye Fan was afraid of aggravating the wound, so he slowed down. Suddenly, Ye Fan was surprised to find that he could see a blurry light through the last layer of gauze…

 This meant…

his eyes could still perceive light.

Overjoyed, Ye Fan removed the last piece of gauze. The bright light made him uncomfortable, and he instinctively shielded his eyes with his hand. He then slightly opened them, gradually adjusting to the light before slowly opening them completely.

Discovering he wasn't blind, Ye Fan rushed to the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror.

His eyes were mostly fine, though his pupils still had a hint of bloodshot, like he was wearing color-changing contact lenses. Aside from the prolonged bandage, his face was unharmed.

His only regret was that although he could see, it was very blurry, as if his eyes were covered by a semi-transparent gauze.

After staring at himself in the mirror for several seconds, Ye Fan let out a long sigh of relief. Although he didn't know what had happened to him, one thing was clear: he wasn't disfigured, and he wasn't blind.

This was incredibly good news for Ye Fan.

With these thoughts swirling in his mind, Ye Fan drifted off to sleep.

When Ye Fan woke up, it was already past seven o'clock the next day. The first thing he did was rush to the bathroom. In the mirror, the bloodshot in his pupils had disappeared, and his vision had completely recovered; he could see things very clearly.

Ye Fan really wanted to jump around twice and shout to express his excitement.

Filled with joy, Ye Fan returned to his bed and sat down. He felt a little hungry and remembered that Zhang Wei had left some snacks in the cabinet when he visited him. So, Ye Fan subconsciously looked at the cabinet.

Suddenly, Ye Fan found that he could clearly see the snacks and a carton of milk in the cabinet. Ye Fan thought he was hallucinating and subconsciously rubbed his eyes. When Ye Fan opened his eyes again, he found that the cabinet was closed. Then, Ye Fan saw the things inside the cabinet again.

"What on earth is going on?" Ye Fan was completely bewildered by this strange phenomenon.

Just then, footsteps sounded outside the door. Ye Fan subconsciously turned his head to look at the doorway, his gaze piercing through the wooden door to see a nurse walking inside. Outside, the nurse was talking to a stranger and even accepted a red envelope that the stranger had secretly slipped to him.

The nurse whispered, "Don't worry, I'll vacate the ward as soon as possible."

The stranger nodded in satisfaction, said a few polite words, and hurriedly left.

When the nurse pushed the door open, Ye Fan realized that after his ordeal, he had gained a magical power: X-ray vision!

"What are you doing? Why did you remove the gauze without permission?" the nurse shouted angrily at Ye Fan, who had his back to her, and casually placed the tray she was carrying on the table.

Immersed in his surprise, Ye Fan didn't notice the nurse's words at all.

"I'm talking to you, can't you hear me? Hmm? Your eyes are okay?" The nurse, now facing Ye Fan, looked in surprise at his undamaged eyes, and even his injured face was completely healed, with skin even whiter than the rest of his body.

After the initial surprise, the nurse said, "I'm here to inform you that the treatment fees your boss advanced have run out. If you don't continue paying, you'll have to move out of the intensive care unit. Oh, and you have ten minutes." She then gave a disdainful snort.

The doctor who followed coughed and said in a pretentious tone, "How can you talk to a patient like that? We are angels in white, dedicated to saving lives; don't always associate things with money."

"Huh? Your eyes are healed? How is that possible?" The doctor suddenly noticed that Ye Fan's eyes were healed, and his facial skin was also fine. He was Ye Fan's attending physician, and he knew Ye Fan's condition better than anyone. According to the tests at the time, his eyes definitely couldn't be saved.

But now he saw that Ye Fan's eyes were completely fine.

The nurse, preoccupied with getting Ye Fan out of bed as quickly as possible so other patients could be admitted, wasn't interested in investigating his miraculous recovery. She urged, "Are you really deaf? Didn't you hear what I just said?"

Hearing this, Ye Fan was instantly furious. He'd already had enough to suffer these past two days—being fired for rescuing a damsel in distress, nearly losing his life, and now he was being humiliated in the hospital.

"Even if you paid me, I wouldn't stay in a place like this," he said, turning to leave.

He gave the stunned doctor and nurse a cold look before leaving the ward.

Standing outside the hospital, Ye Fan checked his pockets; all his belongings were there—two thousand yuan in total. He'd originally planned to call Zhang Wei out to celebrate his discharge, but then he thought his rapid recovery might frighten Zhang Wei, so he took a taxi home.

In the city center, the company rented an apartment for Ye Fan, which served as company accommodation. Initially, four people lived there together, but later the others gradually moved out because they found girlfriends, leaving only Ye Fan alone.

The apartment wasn't very large; the two bedrooms combined were only about forty square meters, but the sparse furniture and appliances made it seem relatively spacious. Sitting by the window, Ye Fan pondered the events at the hospital that day, his X-ray vision.

Ye Fan focused his gaze on a cabinet not far away, concentrating his attention. The amazing scene unfolded again; Ye Fan easily saw what was inside the cabinet. Suppressing his excitement, Ye Fan shifted his gaze to the window. A pigeon was flying past in front of him. Ye Fan clearly saw the feather patterns on the pigeon's feathers a hundred meters away, and even the numbers on its leg band…

After a series of tests, Ye Fan gained some information. He not only possessed the ability to see through objects but could also see things very far away. However, this ability couldn't be overused, or he would feel dizzy.

Just as Ye Fan was about to rest and recover his mental energy, there was a knock at the door. Before Ye Fan could open it, the landlord, a bald man in his forties, pushed the door open abruptly. With a stern, fleshy face, he said in a gruff voice, "Kid, it's time to pay the rent."

The landlord's sudden intrusion without permission infuriated Ye Fan. Although it was a rented house, he still had his own private space.

"Your company's administration department just called me. You've been fired. If you want to continue living here, you'll have to pay the rent again," the landlord said, rolling his eyes.

Ye Fan calculated that the rent was 1,500 yuan a month. At such a high price, and with only 2,000 yuan to his name now that he was unemployed, he definitely wouldn't continue renting. However, moving would take a few more days, so Ye Fan said, "Could I extend the lease for another week? I'll move out as soon as I find a suitable place."

The landlord scoffed and said, "I knew you were a poor wretch who couldn't afford to extend the lease. But since you're a long-time tenant, I'll agree. One week, 1,000 yuan, pay upfront."

 1,000 yuan a week?

He knew the monthly rent was only 1,500 yuan.

Ye Fan was immediately furious and asked, "You're asking for too much!"

The landlord nonchalantly replied, "Rentals are rising sharply these days, and there are a lot of people looking to rent. Enough talk, rent if you want, get out if you don't. I don't have trouble finding tenants."

Ye Fan was enraged and immediately said, "I'm not renting anymore!" With that, he quickly packed his clothes and other valuables into his backpack, turned around, and left.

The landlord blocked Ye Fan's path, saying, "Hey, hey! Don't go yet! Your boss hasn't paid this month's rent. If you leave, who am I supposed to ask for it?"

Ye Fan impatiently kicked the landlord to the ground, angrily saying, "If you want the rent, go find Zhang Dahu."

The landlord, not expecting the usually docile Ye Fan to actually attack, was stunned. By the time he reacted, Ye Fan was already gone. The landlord, furious, jumped up and down, cursing, "You little bastard, how dare you hit me!"

Standing by the roadside, Ye Fan muttered under his breath, "Damn it, what's wrong with me these past few days? So many unlucky things have happened." Cursing aside, life had to go on. After calming down, Ye Fan began to plan for the future. The little money he had wouldn't last more than a few days.

He needed to find a way to earn money as soon as possible. With this amazing ability of X-ray vision, why should he still work like before? Ye Fan shook his head. Now that he had this incredible power, why not use it to make money?
