Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight - Discipline

(Kael POV)

Kael did not return to his chambers.

Not yet. Not while the taste of Lyra's defiance lingered like fire on his tongue.

The corridor replayed in his mind: the tray slipping, her knees buckling, the way her silver eyes refused to submit even when the bond surged like a living thing between them. His wolf growled low, impatient, unsettled. He had never felt the pull this strong, never from an omega who was supposed to fear him.

She defied me. And I let it happen.

Control was everything. Alpha power demanded it. Authority required it. Yet, for the first time, Kael's dominance had been tested, and the bond had reacted in ways he hadn't anticipated.

He stepped onto the training yard, the early sun cutting glints off his armor, sword in hand. Guards froze instinctively. His Beta, tall and precise, stepped forward.

"You are injured," the Beta said cautiously.

Kael ignored him, gripping his sword tighter. "Then I'll heal."

The words were sharp, final. No one dared speak further.

(Kael POV)

Alone in the ring, Kael struck the training post over and over. Not measured strikes. Not demonstrations of skill. Raw, punishing, relentless. Steel sang against wood, each swing a mixture of anger, frustration, and disciplined fury.

You let it happen, he told himself with every strike.

The bond hummed faintly, mocking, teasing. Lyra's defiance was like acid, a spark burning through the calm he tried to maintain.

Pain flared through his shoulder where a muscle screamed in protest. He welcomed it. Pain reminded him he was alive, in control, and human, but also fragile. A moment of weakness, and the bond would find him.

His wolf prowled beneath his skin, restless, frustrated. He would not give in. Not now. Not ever.

By the time the council convened, Kael was composed. Alpha in full: cold, controlled, untouchable.

Omegas would whisper later of his absence, of the strange tension that lingered like a storm over the palace.

"There was an incident," Kael said calmly when the council inquired.

"Corrected how?" a councilor asked.

Kael's silver eyes swept the room. "Distance," he said. "The omega involved will be reassigned immediately."

No names. No emotions. Power justified itself.

One councilor asked cautiously, "Will this affect palace operations?"

Kael's voice was ice. "Only positively."

Inside, his wolf growled, restless. Inside, his alpha instincts bristled. He had punished himself, yes. But the bond? Still pulsing, still alive, still dangerous.

(Lyra POV)

Meanwhile, Lyra had returned to her assigned quarters, unaware of the full measure of what Kael had endured in her absence. She traced her fingers along the cracked tray she had dropped in the corridor, feeling shame and pride in equal measure.

I did not beg, she told herself. I did not give in.

Her chest ached faintly, not from exhaustion, but from the bond. A low hum beneath her skin reminded her: Kael was near, and the connection refused to be ignored.

She pressed her palm over her heart. Two months. That was all she needed to train, to sharpen herself, to be ready for whatever came next.

The bond throbbed faintly, like a pulse she could feel but not control.

She smiled faintly. He doesn't scare me. Not yet.

(Kael POV)

Sunlight slanted through the training yard. Kael sheathed his blades and leaned against the railing, silently observing the palace below.

Control had been regained. Publicly, at least. But inside… inside he could not stop thinking of her, the way she had looked at him, unmoved, unbroken, defiant.

Distance was supposed to starve the bond. Control was supposed to hold it in check. Yet it pulsed quietly, like a living thing, reminding him that it could not be denied forever.

He closed his eyes, pressing the heels of his palms against his face.

If distance fails…

He would not allow failure. Not for himself. Not for the palace. Not for her.
