Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six – The Risk of Being Seen

The morning light crept through the tall palace windows, painting golden stripes across polished floors. The hallways smelled faintly of wax and old stone, but today, the air felt heavy, electric with anticipation.

Lyra knew it immediately.

She had been spotted.

Not by common courtiers, not by whispers—but by a rival of influence, someone who had been watching her rise subtly for weeks. A noble with power and cunning enough to manipulate perception and circumstance.

She walked briskly down the corridor, trying to appear calm, though her heart hammered against her ribs. The bond pulsed sharply, warning her, warning him, warning both of them.

The moment she stepped into the main courtyard, the trap became clear. A group of palace attendants and lesser nobles subtly blocked her path, forming a funnel toward the steps where the rival awaited. Every movement calculated, every look measured.

Lyra's pulse raced. She could feel the Alpha before she saw him.

He appeared at the top of the stairs, expression carved from ice, posture flawless. His eyes, however, flicked to her instantly, scanning every detail of her position, reading the tension, feeling her heartbeat in tandem with his bond.

He did not move toward her immediately. Instead, he assessed the threat, calm on the surface, mind calculating. The bond flared violently—hot, insistent, protective.

Lyra's wolf stirred, restless. Danger. Approach.

The rival spoke first. Loud enough for all nearby to hear, sweetly venomous.

"Unclaimed," the noble said, voice smooth. "You move too boldly in corridors not meant for your rank. Perhaps some lessons are overdue."

Gasps and murmurs rippled through the courtyard.

Lyra held her chin high. "I move where I must," she said evenly, though her pulse throbbed. "And I take no lessons from threats thinly veiled as guidance."

A smile curved the rival's lips, cruel and deliberate. "Confidence… or foolishness? Time will tell."

The Alpha stepped down then, slow, controlled, deliberate. Each movement was precise, measured, and commanding. No one in the courtyard could misinterpret it—he was present, yet not emotionally revealed.

The bond responded immediately. Heat rolled through Lyra, awareness sharpened, and instinct screamed at both of them.

"You'll speak carefully," he said quietly, voice carrying just enough weight to cut through the murmurs.

The rival's smile faltered slightly. A flicker of hesitation.

Lyra's wolf growled low, sensing him even more clearly now. Protection. Immediate.

"You overstep," he continued, still composed, still cold. "And the palace does not tolerate recklessness disguised as challenge."

Lyra glanced up at him, pulse racing. She had not looked to him for rescue—but in that moment, his presence, controlled yet undeniable, grounded her. The bond pulsed strongly, linking them in a silent conversation of shared instinct and awareness.

The rival, realizing the tables had shifted, stepped back, voice clipped. "It appears caution has allies everywhere."

Alpha's gaze did not leave Lyra's for more than a heartbeat. His control remained absolute in public, but the bond screamed the truth beneath the surface—protective, possessive, aware.

Once the threat had been neutralized, he stepped aside, allowing Lyra to continue. Her hands remained steady, her posture unbroken, but she knew the moment had changed everything. The palace had witnessed not only a political correction but a subtle signal—the Alpha's attention was no longer optional.

As she moved away, the bond pulsed, hot and relentless. He had not spoken a word beyond measured correction, but Lyra felt the weight of his presence, the silent promise of intervention, and the lingering charge of what they shared.

The courtyard emptied. Only she and the distant Alpha remained.

The danger had passed. For now.

But both knew this: being seen had consequences, and the bond they shared was no longer something that could be hidden.
