Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Call That Wasn't Yours

Chapter 4: The Call That Wasn't Yours

Most people ignore numbers they don't recognize.

Some answer out of politeness.

The legend doesn't say which choice is worse.

It begins with a phone call that arrives at the wrong moment. Late enough to feel intrusive. Quiet enough that the ringing seems louder than it should be.

No caller ID. No vibration beforehand. Just the sound, steady and patient.

Those who answer say the voice on the other end is calm. Familiar, but not recognizable. As if it knows how people usually sound.

"Sorry," it says politely. "I believe this number used to belong to someone else."

Most people respond the same way. They say it's a mistake. That they've had the number for years.

The voice listens.

Then it replies, gently, "Yes. That's what they said too."

Sometimes the call ends there.

Other times, the voice asks a small, reasonable question.

"Are you still using it?"

People laugh nervously. Of course they are. Why wouldn't they be?

The voice pauses, as if checking something just out of reach.

"I see," it says. "Then I'll update the record."

The call disconnects cleanly. No static. No error tone.

Nothing immediately changes.

Days pass. Sometimes weeks.

But small inconsistencies begin to surface.

Messages sent but never delivered. Calls that connect to silence before ending on their own. Voicemails saved on the phone that the owner doesn't remember recording.

Some swear they hear breathing just before the line goes dead.

Others receive calls from contacts who insist they never dialed.

The phone itself remains fine. No cracks. No glitches. No visible damage.

It simply begins to feel… temporary.

Like something being borrowed.

People start checking the screen more often. Confirming the number. Reassuring themselves.

One person claimed they answered the call twice.

The second time, the voice sounded relieved.

"Thank you for picking up again," it said. "We were worried we'd have to reassign it."

They asked what that meant.

The voice responded politely.

"Some places don't need to be kept," it said. "They remember who stayed."

The caller waited, as if expecting a response.

When none came, it added, "You've been very cooperative."

The call ended.

That night, the phone rang once more.

When they answered, no one spoke.

The line stayed open just long enough to confirm something had connected.

By morning, the number was no longer in service.

Friends insisted it had changed weeks ago.

Old messages showed "Unknown Sender."

The phone still worked.

It just didn't belong to anyone anymore.
