Niklaus leaned back slightly in his seat, allowing the silence to settle between them before continuing.
The room had grown strangely quiet.
The faint crackle of the fire was the only sound that disturbed the stillness. Golden light from the lamps rested across the ancient artifacts lining the walls, while shadows stretched lazily across the floor. Outside, the afternoon wind moved through the trees, brushing against the cave entrance with a soft, almost whispering sound.
Videl remained seated across from Niklaus.
She hadn't moved much since their conversation began.
But the longer Niklaus spoke, the more difficult it became for her to maintain the calm expression she had entered the cave with.
She had come seeking an answer.
She hadn't expected the answer to shake the very foundation of who she believed herself to be.
Niklaus folded his arms.
