The entire ward went quiet. Elara's heart slammed against her chest as she stared at Grandpa's smiling face.
What was he talking about? Why would he even ask a question like that without even blinking?
Against her will, she turned her head to look at Adrian. Her eyes narrowed when she realized he was already staring at her. Their gazes locked for a brief second before she immediately looked away, an uncontrollable flush crepting up her neck.
Grandpa watched them quietly. Then a small chuckle escaped his lips as if he had suddenly understood something. But whatever that understanding was, Elara knew it was definitely a misunderstanding.
"Never mind," he said, waving his hand weakly. "I thought I'd missed something."
The heat around Elara's ears grew stronger.
Why would he say things like that? It would have been manageable if Adrian wasn't standing right there, but he was. She could almost feel his gaze lingering on her.
