Shadow Alley curled behind the docks like a hidden scar, narrow and damp even under the midday sun. The cobbles gleamed with river mist and spilled ale; the air carried salt, tar, and the faint copper tang of old blood. Lanterns dangled from crooked iron hooks, their weak flames barely cutting the gloom. People moved here in silence, hoods drawn low, eyes averted from doorways where soft moans and murmured bargains leaked into the street.
Mara led with quick, eager steps, her hand locked in Alex's. That manic smile never left her lips; if anything it grew brighter the deeper they went into the shadows. "Almost there, hero," she whispered, squeezing his fingers hard. "The Velvet Cage doesn't shout its name. You have to want it to find it."
She stopped at a plain wooden door recessed into soot-blackened stone. No sign, no number just a small brass knocker shaped like a coiled whip. Mara rapped twice, paused, then once more.
The door cracked open. A heavy man with a scarred cheek and one milky eye stared out, measuring Alex from boots to broad shoulders, then lingering on Mara's flushed face and the way she clung to his side like a favoured pet.
"Business?" he grunted.
"Private purchase," Mara answered, voice sweet and steady. "He wants quality. Fighter stock."
The doorman grunted again and stepped aside. "Boss is in the back. No trouble. No refunds."
Inside, the Velvet Cage felt more like a private salon than a slave market. Thick carpets swallowed footsteps. Low couches lined the walls, draped in dark velvet. A few oil lamps burned with steady, scented flames, myrrh and expensive perfume curling through the air. Soft lute music drifted from somewhere deeper, slow and sensual.
A woman emerged from behind a heavy curtain: mid-thirties, sharp cheekbones, black hair pinned in an elegant knot, dressed in a high-collared burgundy silk gown that clung to her curves without revealing skin. She moved with calm, absolute authority.
"Welcome," she said, voice smooth as poured wine. "I am Mistress Veyra. You seek a fighter, I understand."
Alex met her eyes without blinking. "Strong. Able to fight beside me in a labyrinth or a street brawl. Not just a pretty toy. I want someone who can kill when I need her to, then kneel when the fighting's done."
Veyra's lips curved in faint approval. "A man who values utility. Excellent. Come."
She led them through the curtain into a long, narrow chamber lit by wall sconces. Five girls stood on a low wooden dais in a loose line. Thin white linen shifts clung to their bodies—translucent enough to hint at curves, nipples, the shadow between thighs—yet modest enough to force imagination. Collars gleamed at their throats: iron for most, silver for one. Hands were clasped behind backs; eyes down or forward depending on their nature.
Alex scanned them methodically.
A short-haired blonde human with calloused knuckles, looks like a street fighter, probably sold for debt. Attractive, but too slight.
A green-skinned orc woman, tusks filed short, muscles thick under soft curves. Tempting, but her gaze was dull and broken.
Two elves, golden-haired and auburn both delicate, clearly pleasure-trained rather than combat-ready.
Then his eyes caught the last in line.
Dog beastkin.
She stood taller than the others, nearly six feet, broad-shouldered and powerfully muscled. Tawny-gold skin shimmered with short, velvety fur that darkened along her arms, powerful thighs, and the thick base of her tail, which hung stiff and alert behind her. Black-tipped ears twitched forward at the sound of boots, then flattened slightly under scrutiny.
Her face was fierce and beautiful: high cheekbones, full lips curled in a perpetual half-snarl, amber eyes burning with raw challenge. A black leather collar encircled her throat, a short chain dangling between heavy, firm breasts that strained the thin shift. The linen clung to sweat-damp skin, outlining hard nipples, the deep valley between her tits, the taut dip of her waist flaring into wide hips and thick, corded thighs built for sprinting, leaping, crushing. Between those thighs the shift molded to the plump mound of her sex, dark curls shadowing through the damp fabric. Her tail gave a single, slow lash agitation or invitation, impossible to tell yet.
She met Alex's stare head-on. No fear. No submission. Just primal hunger and defiance.
His cock hardened instantly, thick and insistent against his trousers.
"That one," he said, voice rough.
Veyra followed his gaze. "Kaelith. Canine beastkin. Former pit-fighter from the border arenas. Fast, vicious, high stamina, quick healer. She tore out throats for coin until her last owner lost a wager and sold her off. In combat she's lethal. In private…" Veyra's smile turned sly. "She bites. Hard. Unless you make her beg first."
Alex stepped closer. Kaelith's nostrils flared, scenting him. Her tail flicked once, ears swiveling. Up close her musk hit him warm fur, clean sweat, the sharp, sweet tang of feminine arousal already seeping through the linen.
He circled her slowly. Broad back, powerful arms, round ass firm enough to bounce under a palm. When he stopped in front of her again she held his gaze, lips parting to show sharp canines.
"You want to fight beside me?" he asked.
Kaelith's voice came low and growling. "If the master's worth following. I don't kneel for cowards."
Alex grinned, dark and slow. "Good. I don't keep cowards."
He turned to Veyra. "Price?"
"Two hundred gold," she answered smoothly. "Prime condition. Proven killer. No major scars, no brands. And she's in heat—makes her… responsive. You'll feel it the moment you touch her."
Alex's jaw clenched. Two hundred. He had one hundred and thirty-five at best after scraping every last coin from the pouch. Still short.
But he wasn't walking out without her.
"One hundred and ten," he countered flatly. "Cash in hand. Right now."
Veyra laughed, soft and sharp. "You insult me. One-ninety."
"One-twenty."
"One-eighty."
Alex stepped right up to Kaelith. He hooked a finger under her collar and yanked her forward until her heavy breasts pressed against his chest. She growled low in her throat but didn't resist. Her amber eyes locked on his, pupils blown wide, tail lashing faster, the scent of her slick heat thickening the air.
"One-ten," he said over his shoulder. "And I sign your magic contract. Binding. Permanent. She can't run, can't betray. Standard slave oath—loyalty etched into her soul. You keep the collar key until the ink dries."
Veyra studied him: his size, the casual violence in his stance, the quiet certainty that he would kill if pushed. Then she looked at Kaelith who was breathing hard now, nipples like diamonds under the shift, thighs subtly pressing together as arousal dripped down her inner leg.
Silence stretched.
"One hundred and ten gold," Veyra said at last. "And the contract. Standard terms: absolute obedience, no escape, pain if she disobeys. The magic is old—blood and will. Once signed, she's yours in body and soul until you release her or she dies."
Alex released the collar. He reached into his pouch and counted out every remaining coin—eleven stacks of ten, clinking heavily onto the side table.
Veyra swept them into a silk pouch with swift fingers. From a drawer she produced a rolled parchment sealed with black wax. She unrolled it on the table: dense script in crimson ink, runes pulsing faintly along the edges.
"Blood from both of you," she said. "Prick your thumb. Press it here."
Alex drew his belt knife, sliced his thumb without hesitation, pressed the bloody print to the bottom line. Kaelith watched, tail still lashing, then extended her own hand. Veyra pricked her thumb with a silver needle. Kaelith pressed her print beside his. The runes flared bright crimson, then sank into the parchment with a soft hiss. The contract rolled itself shut and vanished in a puff of black smoke.
"She's yours," Veyra said. "The chain key is on the collar. Break her in gently… or don't. She'll survive either way."
Alex turned to Kaelith. "On your knees, dog. Greet your new master."
Kaelith held his gaze one heartbeat longer, then sank slowly to her knees, tail sweeping the floor behind her, that feral half-snarl curling into something darker, hungrier.
Mara stepped forward, her own crazy smile blazing like fire. "Welcome to the pack, pretty bitch," she whispered, voice thick with glee.
