The Iron Pit never slept; its roar only deepened, grew hungrier between bouts. Fresh-raked sand drank the last of the seeding-round blood at the edges, turning dark patches into muddy smears under the torchlight. The massive braziers at each corner of the arena guttered low now, flames licking upward in fits and starts, throwing jagged shadows that danced like specters across the pitted stone walls. Smoke hung thick in the air, acrid, heavy with the smell of burning pitch, roasted meat from vendor carts, and the copper-sweet reek of spilled blood. The crowd, half-drunk, fully feral, screamed wagers back and forth, slapped coins on benches, bayed for more red, more broken bones, more names choked off in surrender.
Alex and Kaelith slipped back into the fighters' tunnel after their seeding wins, skin still electric, drying gore crusting gauntlet, claws, and leather. The tunnel itself was a low, torch-lit throat of stone, damp and echoing, lined with iron-barred warm-up cages where other fighters paced, shadowboxed, or sat slumped against the bars nursing swollen joints and split lips. A few glanced up as the pair passed, some with grudging respect, others with naked envy, but most kept their eyes down. The Pit had its own hierarchy, and tonight it was shifting fast.
Mara darted down from the stands the moment the current match ended, threading through the press of bodies like a fox through underbrush. She reached them in seconds, slamming against Alex first, lips crashing into his, tasting the copper tang of Torvald's blood still on his mouth, then spun to Kaelith, burying her face in the beastkin's blood-matted ruff and inhaling deeply.
"Fucking gorgeous," she breathed, voice trembling with manic joy. Her nails scraped lightly over Kaelith's fresh cuts, shallow, and already clotting, drawing a low hiss from the beastkin. "You made him kneel like a whipped cur. I saw every second from up there. Now go rip the next ones open wider. I want screams. I want their names choking on your victory."
Alex fisted Mara's auburn braid, yanked her head back sharply, and kissed her bruising-hard, teeth clashing, tongue claiming. His free hand dug into Kaelith's ass, possessive, rough, fingers sinking deep enough to bruise the flesh beneath the wyvern leather.
"Stay where I can see you," he growled against Mara's mouth, voice low enough that only they could hear it over the distant crowd roar. "Wave that staff. Scream until you bleed for me. I want to look up mid-fight and see you losing your voice cheering my name."
Mara laughed, wild, jagged, almost unhinged, already retreating toward the spectator tunnel. "I'll scream till my throat bleeds, hero. Go paint the sand red. Both of you."
She melted into the mob, auburn braid swinging like a banner.
The announcer's bellow rolled through the stone like thunder.
"Round two begins! Slot A! Alex the Flamefist versus Gavren the Highborn!"
Alex strode onto the sand without hesitation.
Gavren emerged from the opposite tunnel: tall, lean, silver-haired, noble-sharp features twisted in open contempt. His polished plate gleamed under torchlight; house sigils etched into every pauldron and vambrace. Longsword at his hip, small round shield strapped to his left arm. He stopped ten paces away and sneered across the ring.
"Peasant with a trinket glove," he called, voice carrying easily over the sudden hush. "Kneel now. Spare us both the embarrassment of watching you bleed out in the dirt."
Alex flexed the Flamefist Gauntlet once. The ruby pulsed, crimson, hungry, like a second heartbeat.
He drew his longsword in a slow, deliberate motion and waited.
The horn blared.
Gavren lunged, elegant, and lethal, thrust straight for the heart, blade gleaming like a shard of moonlight.
Alex twisted, just enough. The point kissed his ribs, drawing a thin line of fire across leather and skin. He snapped the gauntlet up.
White flame roared into Gavren's shield arm. Metal sagged instantly, glowing cherry-red. Leather blackened. Skin blistered underneath in ugly, weeping bubbles. Gavren snarled, shock more than pain yet, jerked back, sword whipping sideways in a desperate counter.
Steel met steel, clang that rang in the teeth.
Alex punched again.
Crimson fire punched through breastplate dead-center. Padding smoked. Flesh cooked. Gavren's scream tore high, raw, animal, as heat gnawed rib and muscle. The shield clattered to the sand. His sword arm shook, grip faltering.
Crowd exploded, blood-lust incarnate.
Alex pressed forward without mercy. Sword flicked, precise, surgical, shallow cuts parting straps, splitting chain links, painting red ribbons across arms, thighs, chest. Gavren parried, desperate, slowing, each clash costing him breath, stance, speed. Blood welled from a dozen shallow wounds; sweat ran pink down his face, stinging the cuts.
Alex feinted high.
Gavren bit, overreached, shield arm lifting instinctively to block.
Gauntlet slammed into ribs.
Fire detonated inward. Armor buckled with a tortured screech. Bone snapped, sharp crack audible even over the crowd roar. Gavren folded sideways, clutching his side, smoke curling from charred steel, blood bubbling at his lips in frothy gasps.
"Yield," Alex said. Flat. Sword leveled at Gavren's throat.
Gavren wheezed, eyes glassy with shock and pain, then slammed his palm against the sand, once, twice, three times.
Horn.
"Flamefist! Flamefist! Flamefist!"
Alex raised his sword high, blood-slick, soot-streaked, pointed straight at Mara in the stands. She leaped on her bench, staff aloft, screaming herself raw, green crystal blazing like a second heart. He held the point a heartbeat longer, letting the crowd see the promise, then turned and walked off the sand, leaving the broken noble kneeling in his ruin.

Kaelith's bout followed immediately.
The announcer's voice thundered.
"Slot B, round two! Kaelith the Beastclaw versus Vorrak the Ironfist!"
Vorrak lumbered out: bull-thick, six-four, spiked plate armor, iron-wrapped fists the size of hams. Bloodroot stained his grin crimson; his eyes were already fever-bright with anticipation.
"Pretty claws, little bitch," he bellowed across the sand. "I'll snap them off one by one and fuck you with the stumps."
Kaelith's tail lashed once, then stilled. Her amber eyes narrowed to slits.
Horn.
Vorrak charged, double overhand hammer blow aimed to cave her skull.
Kaelith dropped low, exploded forward like a loosed arrow.
Claws raked thighs as she passed, deep, wet furrows through leather and meat. Blood sprayed in bright arcs. Vorrak bellowed, spun, haymaker whistling over her head.
She rolled under it. Came up behind. Greataxe arced flat, slammed into the side of his knee with bone-grinding crunch. Cartilage tore; leg buckled sideways. Vorrak staggered, roared, charged again, blind rage.
Kaelith met him head-on.
Axe haft blocked iron fist, sparks spat. Claws punched side, plates crumpled inward, tips sinking into meat. Vorrak howled, high, furious, swung wild.
She ducked. Slipped inside guard. Dropped axe, clatter, and seized his wrist with both clawed hands. Twisted, hard. Bone snapped, wet crack. Vorrak bellowed, tried to headbutt her.
Kaelith arched back, dodged, then drove her knee into his groin. Full force. Something soft ruptured inside; his scream pitched shrill, eyes bulging. He folded forward, hands flying to protect himself.
She grabbed hair, claws piercing scalp, yanked his head down and smashed her forehead into his nose. Cartilage pulped; blood gushed hot across her muzzle in a thick sheet. Vorrak reeled, eyes streaming, dropped to one knee, gasping.
Kaelith retrieved her axe. Laid the flat of the blade across the back of his neck, edge kissing skin just enough to draw a thin line of red.
"Yield," she snarled.
Vorrak wheezed, hands cradling ruined groin, slapped sand three times, weak, desperate.
Horn.
"Kaelith! Kaelith! Kaelith!"
She stood over him, chest heaving, claws dripping ropes of red, greataxe planted beside her like a marker. Blood sheeted her muzzle, throat, arms in thick, glistening sheets. She threw her head back, roared, long, shattering, primal. The Pit shook with the sound.
Mara screamed back, ecstatic, feral, staff high above her head.
Alex lifted the Flamefist, flame licking knuckles in salute.
Kaelith's teeth flashed, all predator, all triumph.
She turned and walked off the sand, leaving Vorrak broken, bleeding, kneeling in defeat.
Two down. Three more fights to go. The night burned hotter. The gold waited.
