Sleep came heavy that night, deeper and more complete than any rest Alex had known since the game first swallowed him whole and spat him out into this brutal, beautiful world.
The house stood silent around them, its thick stone walls muffling even the distant night sounds of Eldoria: the occasional clatter of a late cart rolling over uneven cobblestones several streets away, the faint, far-off bark of a watchman's hound echoing down the ward, the low, restless murmur of wind moving through the narrow alleys and rattling loose shutters. Inside the master bedroom, the hearth fire had burned down to a nest of glowing embers, each one pulsing like a slow, dying heartbeat. The faint orange light danced lazily across the scarred ironwood bedposts (marks left by chains and desperate grips), traced the black iron bars of the new cage standing sentinel in the corner like a patient predator, and washed over the three bodies tangled together in exhausted surrender.
Kaelith lay sprawled on her side, one powerful arm draped possessively across kaelith's narrow waist, tawny fur rising and falling with each deep, even breath. Her thick tail curled loosely around Alex's thigh in that familiar, claiming way: velvet fur warm against his skin, the black tip twitching once in dreams before settling again into stillness. Mara curled tightly against his other side, freckled arm thrown across his chest, small hand curled into a loose fist over his heart as though anchoring herself even in sleep. Her auburn braid had come half-undone during their earlier hours; loose strands fanned across the pillow and tangled in his fingers like silken threads caught in a web. Her soft snores (barely audible) mixed with the occasional pop and sigh of cooling coals settling deeper into ash. The air still carried the lingering musk of their earlier claiming: the sharp salt of sweat, the rich animal scent of Kaelith's fur, Mara's sweeter arousal like crushed summer berries, the faint metallic bite of small scratches that had already begun to heal into thin pink lines across skin and hide alike.
Alex drifted.
The world tilted sideways (slow at first, a gentle slide like a ship turning into a current) then sudden and absolute, as though the floor had dropped away entirely.
He opened his eyes to white.
Not the blinding white of fresh snow or polished marble (something purer, colder, more absolute). It was the white at the heart of a star, the white that exists before color is born, before light learns to differentiate itself into shades and shadows. No walls enclosed him. No floor pressed against his bare feet. No ceiling arched overhead. There was only endless, featureless radiance that pressed gently against his skin without warmth, without shadow, without mercy. He stood naked, Flamefist Gauntlet vanished from his arm, longsword gone from his hip, every scar and bruise earned in the Pit erased as though time itself had reached back and smoothed them away with careful fingers. His body felt light (almost weightless) yet strangely anchored, as though gravity still remembered him even when the world had forgotten how to hold him.
A figure appeared before him (stepping from the light itself as though the radiance simply parted like water to let her through).
She was tall (taller than him by half a head), skin luminous and translucent, like moonlight poured into living flesh and allowed to glow from within. Six wings arched behind her, each feather edged in silver fire that did not burn but shimmered with quiet, contained power. The feathers themselves seemed woven from light and memory, shifting colors at the edges: pearl to opal to palest rose-gold and back again in slow, hypnotic waves. Her face was impossibly beautiful in a way that hurt to look at directly: high sharp cheekbones, full lips the color of dawn, eyes the molten gold of a summer noon with pupils shaped like thin, perfect crosses. Long hair the shade of spun starlight flowed around her shoulders and down her back, moving as though stirred by an invisible current that only she could feel. She wore nothing but shifting bands of light that wrapped her body in modest, flowing patterns (covering breasts, hips, and thighs) yet somehow revealing more than they concealed, the glow tracing every curve with reverent, almost worshipful precision.
An angel.
She regarded him in silence for a long, unhurried moment, golden eyes unblinking, serene, unreadable, ancient beyond any human measure of time.
"Are you enjoying your new life, Alexander?"
Her voice was everywhere and nowhere at once (soft as a whisper brushed against the inside of his ear, vast as distant thunder rolling through empty sky). It arrived inside his skull and outside it simultaneously, carrying no echo yet filling every empty space in the endless white.
Alex's jaw tightened. Even here (wherever here was) he felt the familiar coil of rage twist low in his gut, steady and comforting as an old friend.
"I'm alive," he said flatly. "I have power that makes men flinch when I walk past. I have women who belong to me (body, soul, and scream). I have a house with walls thick enough to hold every sound we make. I have a name the Pit chants when they're drunk and scared and trying to convince themselves they're still men. If that's what you mean by 'enjoying' (then yes)."
The angel tilted her head slightly, wings shifting with a sound like distant bells struck once and left to ring into perfect silence.
"You were pulled from your world for a purpose," she said. "Not chance or whim, but purpose."
Alex's fists clenched at his sides, knuckles whitening.
"You brought me here?"
"No." The single word was gentle (almost sad, carrying the weight of something vast and sorrowful). "I merely… observe. The one who pulled you has not yet revealed themselves. But they watching, wating and measuring."
"Then tell me who," Alex growled, stepping forward despite the lack of ground beneath him. "Tell me why. Tell me what the fuck I'm supposed to do with all this."
The angel's lips curved (a small, enigmatic smile that revealed nothing and promised even less).
"You will know when the time comes. For now… this."
She extended her hand.
In her palm lay a stone (small, no bigger than a quail's egg). Perfectly smooth, black as the void between stars, yet flecked with tiny points of white light that moved slowly beneath the surface (like captive stars swimming through dark oil, patient and eternal). The stone seemed to drink the surrounding radiance rather than reflect it, a small absence of light in the midst of endless glow, a quiet wound in perfection.
"Take it," she said.
Alex hesitated only a heartbeat (instinct warring with curiosity) then reached out. The stone settled into his palm, warm (almost fever-hot), pulsing faintly against his skin like a second heartbeat buried deep in the earth. The weight of it surprised him; it felt far heavier than something so small should be, as though it carried centuries inside its perfect shell.
"When you wake," the angel continued (voice dropping to a whisper that somehow filled the endless white space and pressed against his bones), "crush it."
Alex stared at the stone (then lifted his gaze back to her golden eyes).
"What does it do?"
She did not answer.
Instead, she stepped closer (wings folding slightly) until her luminous face was mere inches from his. Her breath (if she breathed) was cool against his lips, carrying the faint scent of ozone and distant rain and something older, something that remembered the first dawn.
"This is your purpose," she said (soft, final, absolute). "Crush it once you wake. Nothing more. Nothing less."
Before he could speak (before he could demand answers, threaten violence, bargain with whatever power she represented) the white light flared (blinding), swallowing everything in a single merciless heartbeat.
Alex jolted awake.
The bedroom was dark (only the dying embers in the hearth giving any light at all). Kaelith still slept against his shoulder (steady breathing, tail draped over his thigh like a living rope). Mara curled on his other side (soft snores, freckled arm thrown across his chest, fingers curled loosely over his heart).
His left hand (the one not wearing the Flamefist) was clenched into a fist so tight his knuckles ached.
He opened it slowly.
The stone lay in his palm (black as void, flecked with moving white lights that drifted beneath the surface like stars in slow, endless migration).
Exactly as in the dream.
His heart slammed against his ribs (once, twice) then settled into a hard, deliberate rhythm that matched the faint pulse he felt through the stone.
Kaelith stirred faintly (amber eyes cracking open), sensing the sudden tension that had snapped through his body like a bowstring.
"Master…?" she murmured (voice thick with sleep, rough from earlier screams, yet already sharpening with instinctive concern).
Alex stared at the stone.
It pulsed once (warm against his skin) like a heartbeat not his own.
He closed his fingers around it (tight), feeling the heat spread up his arm, into his chest, into the place where rage and purpose lived side by side.
The night was very still.
And something (somewhere) was waiting.
