Chapter 58 - Chapter 58: Calm After Violence

The storm moved on as suddenly as it had come.

By dawn, only scattered grey clouds remained drifting across a pale North Blue sky. The sea, though still restless, had returned to long rolling waves instead of violent upheaval. Cold wind swept steadily across the deck, carrying the clean, sharp scent that always followed heavy rain.

For the first time in hours—

There was quiet.

Real quiet.

The kind that followed survival.

Aira stood at the helm with both hands resting lightly on the wheel. Her shoulders were sore from fighting the storm, but her posture remained steady as she guided the ship along the Log Pose's direction once more. The needle had stabilized again during the night, pointing deeper into North Blue territory.

Kenji sat near the mast, back resting against the wood as he slowly rewrapped a fresh bandage around his forearm. Not a serious wound — just a shallow cut from earlier that had reopened during the sea king clash.

He tied the knot with his teeth and exhaled.

"…That thing was huge."

"You say that about every large enemy," Aira replied.

Kenji shrugged. "Because they keep being large."

Ryu stood near the bow as usual, watching the horizon. The light of early morning reflected faintly off the water, turning the endless surface into shifting sheets of pale silver.

Behind him, Soren cleaned his rifle with quiet efficiency. He had dismantled it across a folded cloth again, checking each component carefully for moisture or debris from the storm.

For a while, no one spoke.

Then Kenji broke the silence.

"…First sea king as a crew," he said.

Ryu nodded faintly without turning. "Yeah."

Aira allowed a small smile. "We handled it well."

Soren reassembled the final component of his rifle and secured it across his back. "Coordination improved mid-engagement," he said. "Efficiency increased."

Kenji blinked. "That's your way of saying we did good?"

"Yes."

Kenji grinned. "Nice."

---

After the storm, small repairs became routine.

Rope lines needed tightening.

Sections of railing reinforced.

Water cleared from storage areas.

Nothing catastrophic.

The ship had held.

Ryu moved across the deck inspecting structural points carefully. His movements remained calm, methodical. Even now, after battle and storm, he treated maintenance with the same seriousness as combat.

Kenji joined him after finishing his bandage.

"…Hull looks fine," he said, knocking lightly against one reinforced section.

"Minor stress here," Ryu replied, pointing near a support beam where the sea king's earlier impact had struck. "But stable."

Kenji nodded. "Good."

Aira left the helm briefly once the wind steadied enough for straight sailing. She checked storage and sail tension, adjusting anything loosened by the storm.

Soren moved last, confirming equipment stability and ammunition dryness. Every action he took carried the same quiet precision as his shooting.

When they finished, the deck settled again.

Nothing urgent.

No enemies.

No storm.

Just sea.

Kenji dropped onto a coil of rope and leaned back with a long exhale. "…Feels strange when nothing's trying to kill us."

Aira sat near the helm railing. "Enjoy it while it lasts."

Ryu remained standing at the bow, but his posture had eased slightly.

Soren moved beside him after a moment, gaze scanning the horizon with habitual awareness.

For a while, they simply watched the open water.

Then Soren spoke.

"You spared that pirate crew yesterday," he said.

Ryu nodded. "They were already broken."

Soren considered that. "You don't hunt indiscriminately."

"No."

Kenji spoke from behind them. "We hunt bad people. Not just anyone with a flag."

Aira added quietly, "There's enough monsters out here already."

Soren gave a small nod.

Understood.

---

A distant flutter broke the calm.

Aira looked up first.

"…Another News Coo."

The large bird descended in a practiced glide, landing on the railing with professional confidence. Kenji tossed it a coin immediately, and it dropped a folded newspaper before taking off again.

Ryu caught it this time and unfolded it slowly.

His eyes moved quickly across the front page.

Then paused.

Kenji leaned forward. "What?"

Ryu turned the paper slightly so they could all see.

**UNKNOWN HUNTER GROUP ACTIVE IN NORTH BLUE — MULTIPLE INCIDENTS REPORTED**

Aira blinked. "…Already?"

The article listed:

* Brassfall convoy interception

* Reports of coordinated young fighters

* Increased pirate casualties along several routes

* Marine speculation of a rising hunter crew

Kenji grinned. "We might be becoming a problem for someone."

Soren read quietly over Ryu's shoulder.

"…Your reputation will spread quickly now," he said.

Ryu folded the paper slowly.

"Good," he replied.

Aira gave him a look. "You like attention too much."

"It brings stronger targets," he said simply.

Kenji laughed. "And stronger targets bring better fights."

Aira shook her head but didn't argue.

The wind shifted slightly as they sailed on. Above them, clouds thinned enough to allow clearer sunlight to touch the water. For the first time since entering North Blue, the sea looked almost calm.

Almost peaceful.

Ryu rested his arms lightly on the railing again.

"…Next island?" Kenji asked.

Aira checked the Log Pose and her charts briefly. "Another day or two if wind stays steady. Small trade island. Likely pirate traffic."

Kenji smiled slowly. "Perfect."

Soren adjusted the strap of his rifle. "We continue forward."

Ryu nodded once.

Four figures stood on the deck.

No longer uncertain.

No longer adjusting.

A crew now moving with shared direction.

Behind them, the storm and sea king were already fading into memory.

Ahead—

North Blue waited.

And it was starting to notice them.
