Chapter 79 - Chapter 80: Batman vs. Hulk / Professor Lizard

Since the gamma bomb disaster years ago, Dr. Bruce Banner had never truly rested.

After his confrontation with Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in 2003, he had spent three years running across the world. Every city was temporary. Every identity was false. Every night could end in gunfire.

He knew Ross wasn't the only one hunting him. An organization once tied to Homeland Security, now known as S.H.I.E.L.D., monitored him. Sometimes even local military units attempted to detain him.

Banner had prepared for capture.

He injected himself regularly with special biochemical inhibitors. If he were ever imprisoned, those inhibitors would prevent anyone from extracting usable gamma-altered blood for experimentation.

And if someone tried to break him?

He would let Hulk out.

That was always his final move.

But tonight was different.

He opened his eyes expecting soldiers.

Instead, he saw a giant reptilian monster towering over four meters tall.

Confusion. Shock. Doubt.

And then—

He saw Ross.

All the self-blame. All the running. All the hiding.

It turned into anger.

Pure anger.

BANG!

A massive green fist shattered the cryogenic pod. The reinforced lid warped into a twisted "<" shape and flew through the air like scrap metal.

Hulk stepped out.

His muscles were monstrous — larger even than creatures Batman had fought before. Every breath made them ripple like cables under tension. His skin stretched tight over raw strength.

Thud.

Hulk landed heavily on the rooftop.

His eyes burned with rage as they locked onto Ross.

But then—

He saw Professor Lizard.

The Lizard had fully transformed.

Yellow-green scales covered his body. His spine curved unnaturally. Claws scraped across the rooftop surface. A massive tail twitched behind him.

Unlike Hulk's muscular but still human structure, the Lizard looked completely alien.

Predatory.

Cold.

For a moment, neither monster moved.

Each sensed the other's power.

Then—

Clang!

The twisted pod door slammed onto the rooftop.

Caught mid-flight.

By Spider-Man.

He stepped forward in his dark battle suit, placing the heavy alloy door down like a shield.

Hulk's gaze snapped toward him.

The Lizard's tail flicked sharply in his direction.

Hulk didn't know what to make of this black-suited figure who could casually catch an object thrown with over two tons of force.

Human?

Monster?

"Dr. Banner—" Spider-Man began calmly.

"HULK!"

The roar exploded across the rooftop like a shockwave. Air rippled visibly. Windows on nearby buildings cracked.

Spider-Man did not flinch.

Inside his mind, he reviewed more than forty separate contingency plans designed specifically for Hulk.

Verbal appeasement was one of them.

But Hulk was already moving.

At the same time, the Lizard crouched low and tore into the rooftop floor, digging downward.

He had no interest in fighting Hulk.

His only thought was simple:

Get to the twentieth floor.

Retrieve the perfected Regeneration Serum.

Save Leo.

Hulk stomped forward.

Spider-Man reacted instantly.

He slammed the alloy pod door vertically into the rooftop like a shield.

The next second—

SMASH!

Hulk's fist struck.

The force transferred through the metal and into Spider-Man's body. Even with the barrier, the impact sent both shield and man flying backward.

"One broken rib," Spider-Man calculated mid-air. "Within tolerance."

Pain registered.

Then disappeared.

In mid-air, he fired reinforced webbing — thicker than usual, tensile strength comparable to steel cables.

Snap!

The webs attached to Hulk's shoulders.

"Barbara, gamma device status?" he asked calmly.

"One minute until readiness," Oracle replied.

"Prepare Anti-Hulk Protocol."

Spider-Man pulled hard on the webs, using Hulk's mass as anchor, and hurled himself forward like a cannonball.

He curled his body tightly.

Impact.

BOOM!

Twenty-five tons of kinetic force exploded as he slammed into Hulk's torso.

The rooftop floor collapsed beneath them.

Concrete cracked.

Steel beams bent.

Both fell through to the floor below.

Meanwhile—

"Professor Lizard has reached the fifty-eighth floor," Spider-Man heard through the vibrations.

The Lizard was digging downward rapidly.

Spider-Man ignored Hulk's roar beside him.

He assessed the building.

Most soldiers were neutralized. The Batmobile had drawn away reinforcements.

The battle needed containment.

"Battlefield must remain between eleventh and sixtieth floors," he calculated quickly. "Optimal activation above twelfth floor."

"Enable Plan W," he whispered.

Instantly, multiple web lines shot through the holes the Lizard had dug.

They wrapped around his torso and tail.

Spider-Man pulled upward violently.

The Lizard, who had almost reached the twentieth floor laboratories, was yanked back toward the upper levels.

He roared in frustration.

Above, Hulk smashed upward through debris, bursting back into view.

He grabbed Spider-Man mid-pull.

With terrifying strength, Hulk swung him sideways.

Spider-Man crashed through a concrete wall, leaving a human-shaped crater.

Dust filled the air.

Hulk leapt again.

Spider-Man rolled out just before a fist smashed into the floor, sending cracks racing outward.

"Hulk strongest!" the green giant bellowed.

"I don't doubt that," Spider-Man muttered.

The Lizard burst through the collapsing floor nearby, dragged upward by webs, claws scraping violently.

Now all three were within the same shattered level.

Concrete dust. Twisted beams. Flickering emergency lights.

Hulk turned toward the Lizard.

The Lizard hissed back.

They charged.

The collision shook the entire building.

Hulk's punch met scaled flesh.

The Lizard's claws raked across Hulk's shoulder.

Neither yielded.

Spider-Man activated small sonic emitters along the walls.

High-frequency pulses filled the space.

The Lizard recoiled, hissing in pain.

Hulk staggered slightly but powered through.

Spider-Man moved quickly, firing more reinforced webs to bind Hulk's arms temporarily.

They snapped within seconds.

As expected.

"Thirty seconds," Oracle reported.

The gamma containment device was nearly ready.

Hulk grabbed the Lizard's tail and spun him violently, smashing him into a pillar.

Concrete exploded.

The Lizard bit down onto Hulk's forearm.

Hulk roared in fury.

Spider-Man leapt between them, launching a flash bomb.

Blinding light.

Deafening sound.

Both monsters staggered.

"Ten seconds."

Spider-Man fired multiple anchor webs into structural beams, wrapping Hulk and Lizard together in a dense cocoon.

They struggled violently.

The webs strained.

"Five."

Spider-Man flipped backward to a safe distance.

"Three."

Hulk flexed.

The webs began to tear.

"Two."

The Lizard shrieked.

"One."

"Activate Anti-Hulk Protocol."

From the eleventh floor, the modified gamma device powered on — not as a weapon, but as a focused suppression pulse.

A controlled gamma-frequency wave surged upward through the building.

It hit Hulk first.

His roar faltered.

Then the Lizard.

The scales shimmered under the energy shift.

The pulse was tuned not to amplify—

But to disrupt.

Hulk staggered backward, muscles trembling.

The Lizard collapsed against a broken pillar.

For a brief moment—

Silence.

Dust floated in the air.

Hulk's massive form began to shrink.

Green faded slowly.

Banner fell to his knees, breathing heavily.

The Lizard's body also convulsed, scales receding slightly but not fully disappearing.

Spider-Man stood tall amid the destruction.

Plan W had bought seconds.

Anti-Hulk Protocol had bought minutes.

But this fight was far from over.

Because rage could be suppressed.

It could not be erased.

And tonight, Gotham's strategist had stepped into a battlefield no human was meant to control.
