Chapter 43 - the name across the table

Air travel had once meant escape.

Now it meant expansion.

Kashvi sat by the window of her private jet, London fading into a soft blur beneath the clouds. The cabin was quiet except for the low hum of the engine and the occasional page flip from the file in her hand.

Singapore.

A market worth billions.

A partnership that could redefine her company's global position.

Her assistant had briefed her thoroughly. Virex Holdings — aggressive growth strategy, strong regional influence, high political connections. Their board was known for power plays disguised as diplomacy.

She had handled worse.

Still, something about this deal felt… charged.

Not dangerous.

Just personal.

She closed the file and leaned back, allowing herself a rare moment of stillness.

Five years ago, she had boarded a flight to London with nothing but heartbreak and determination. No power. No plan. No safety net.

Just Kriday.

And now she was flying toward another continent because the world wanted her signature.

Life didn't just change.

It inverted.

Singapore greeted her with sharp sunlight and sharper efficiency.

The city was glass and steel, ambition reflecting off every surface. The car from Virex Holdings waited exactly where it was promised, the driver greeting her with quiet professionalism.

Her hotel suite overlooked Marina Bay — expansive, immaculate, intimidating.

She placed her bag down and walked straight to the window.

Control.

Everything in her life now revolved around maintaining it.

Not out of fear.

Out of wisdom.

The meeting was scheduled for 10 a.m. sharp.

By 9:45, Kashvi was seated in Virex Holdings' top-floor conference room — a sleek space framed with transparent walls and a panoramic view of the skyline.

Her legal head, Arjun Sethi, sat to her right. CFO Meera Khanna to her left.

Across the long glass table sat four board members from Virex.

But the main chair — the head of their side — remained empty.

"Ms. Mehra," one of the directors began smoothly, "our Managing Director will join us shortly."

Kashvi nodded once.

She didn't ask questions.

She observed.

The presentation began — expansion models, projected revenue growth, operational frameworks. She listened without interrupting, occasionally making small notes.

Her face remained unreadable.

But internally, she calculated everything.

At 10:12 a.m., the conference room doors opened.

The sound was soft.

But the air shifted.

Every instinct Kashvi had built over the years tightened at once.

She didn't turn immediately.

Footsteps echoed lightly against the polished floor.

Confident. Measured.

Then a voice.

"Apologies for keeping everyone waiting."

Her fingers stilled over her pen.

That voice.

It had been years.

And yet it slid through memory like it had never left.

Kashvi slowly looked up.

And for the first time in five years…

her composure flickered.

Standing at the head of Virex Holdings was a woman dressed in ivory silk and controlled elegance.

Sharp eyes. Perfect posture. No visible weakness.

"Allow me to formally introduce myself," the woman said, taking her seat.

She placed a folder down.

Lifted her chin.

And met Kashvi's gaze directly.

"Anvi Malhotra. Managing Director, Virex Holdings."

The surname landed like controlled detonation.

Malhotra.

The name she had buried.

The name that once defined her identity without permission.

The name tied to a past filled with control, betrayal, and destruction.

Anvi didn't look shocked.

She looked prepared.

As if she had known exactly who would be sitting across the table today.

Silence stretched for exactly three seconds.

Long enough for history to breathe.

Short enough for no one else to notice.

Kashvi's spine straightened.

Her expression returned to neutral.

Professional.

Impenetrable.

"Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Malhotra," she replied evenly.

No tremor.

No hesitation.

If Anvi expected emotional collapse, she wouldn't get it.

The board resumed the presentation, unaware of the quiet war unfolding in eye contact alone.

Anvi spoke with polished authority.

"Virex is prepared to offer equal equity distribution under revised leadership structure," she said calmly. "However, operational command for Southeast Asia must remain under our discretion for the first fiscal year."

Her tone was smooth.

But her eyes never left Kashvi.

This wasn't just business.

It was positioning.

Kashvi leaned forward slightly.

"And what guarantees do we have," she asked coolly, "that Virex's discretion aligns with K.M. Global's long-term objectives?"

A faint smile touched Anvi's lips.

"Because," she replied, "we both understand what happens when control shifts unexpectedly."

There it was.

Not direct.

But intentional.

A reminder.

Or a threat.

Arjun glanced at Kashvi subtly, sensing the undercurrent but not understanding it.

Kashvi's hands folded neatly on the table.

"I don't operate on past assumptions," she said calmly. "I operate on present leverage."

A beat of silence.

Then she continued.

"K.M. Global does not surrender operational authority. We collaborate. We don't concede."

Her voice wasn't loud.
