Chapter 2 - Ch 2 Threads That Refuse to Stay Still

The imperial academy announcement arrived on a morning that felt deceptively ordinary.

Ryomen vi Arker was midway through a controlled breathing routine, seated cross-legged on the polished stone floor of his chamber. Mana flowed through him in slow, measured circuitsnever surging, never stalling. It was a discipline he had refined over years, inspired less by this world's teachings and more by countless fictional masters who preached one truth in different words:

Power that leaks invites death.

A knock sounded.

Three knocks. Formal. Precise.

"Enter," Ryomen said, opening his eyes.

The chamberlain bowed deeply. "Your Highness. His Majesty commands your presence. The academy decree has been finalized."

So it begins.

Ryomen rose smoothly, slipping on his outer coatdark fabric, gold-thread insignia of the Arker royal line. He made sure his mana signature stayed flat. Predictable. Boring.

The palace corridors were alive with restrained tension. Servants moved faster than usual. Knights stood straighter. Whispers curled along the walls like smoke.

Demons on the frontier.

The academy accelerating its intake.

The crown prince of Arker coming of age.

Too many threads tightening at once.

Ryomen felt it as a faint pressure behind his eyesnot pain, but resistance. The world disliked coincidences stacking too neatly. Causality strained when too many events converged.

Good.

That meant something important was coming.

The council chamber smelled of incense and old stone.

His father sat at the head of the table, armor replaced by imperial black and gold. Generals, archmages, and nobles flanked him in a careful balance of power. His mother stood slightly behind the throne, hands folded, eyes calm.

They all turned as Ryomen entered.

Measured gazes. Evaluations.

No affection. No hostility.

Only assessment.

"Ryomen," the emperor said. "You are aware of the Aethernox Imperial Academy."

"Yes, Father."

"It is no longer merely a place of learning," the emperor continued. "It is a battlefield without bloodshed. A place where demons test the world through proxies and corruption rather than claws."

A general scoffed. "For now."

Ryomen kept his expression neutral.

An academy arc with real consequences, he noted mentally. Classic. Dangerous.

"The academy will host students from all allied races," the emperor went on. "Elves. Dwarves. Vampires. Dragonkin. Some are… less friendly than others."

Ryomen inclined his head. "I will act with discretion."

One of the nobles laughed quietly. "Discretion? This is the crown prince we're speaking of."

"Precisely," his mother said, voice soft but firm. The room stilled instantly. "That is why he must not be reckless."

Her eyes met Ryomen's.

For a fraction of a second, something passed between theman unspoken warning layered with something far deeper.

The seal, she reminded him without words. Do not strain it.

"I accept the academy summons," Ryomen said calmly. "As a student. Not as a symbol."

A murmur rippled through the chamber.

The emperor studied him for a long moment, then nodded once. "Very well."

The decree was sealed.

Ryomen vi Arker would attend the academy.

That night, Ryomen stood alone in the palace training hall.

Moonlight spilled through the high windows, illuminating rows of practice weapons. He selected a simple wooden swordbalanced, unenchanted, unimpressive.

He moved.

No wasted motion. No flourish.

Each strike cut clean air, stopping precisely where flesh would have parted. Each step flowed into the next. His breathing never changed.

Anime had lied about many thingsbut not this:

True strength is quiet.

As he trained, the air around him trembled almost imperceptibly. Not from force, but from correction. The world adjusted around his intent, smoothing angles, perfecting balance, shaving away inefficiencies before they could become mistakes.

Ryomen stopped abruptly.

The tremor lingered a moment too long.

"…That's new."

The causality threads around him pulsed faintly, like strings pulled too tight.

He exhaled slowly.

I'm influencing too much just by existing.

That was dangerous.

The academy would be full of prodigies, artifacts, bloodline magicand worse, observers. People and things that noticed anomalies.

He needed an anchor.

A reason for the world to excuse him.

"Talent," he murmured. "Let them believe that."

He resumed trainingsloppier this time. A deliberate misstep. A slower recovery.

The tremor faded.

Far away, beneath blackened skies, a demon altar cracked.

Vorthrex the Abyss-Seer staggered, claws digging into obsidian stone.

"No," he hissed. "Not again."

The sensation was faintalmost laughable. A ripple, barely strong enough to register.

But he remembered it.

From ancient memories carved into demonkind itself.

A presence that did not command… but decided.

"Find it," Vorthrex snarled. "Search the academies. Search the empires. Tear open every promising bloodline if you must."

A lesser demon hesitated. "Lord Vorthrex… what are we looking for?"

Vorthrex's eyes burned.

"…The reason the First War ended."

The academy gates loomed like a challenge carved in stone.

Students gathered in clusterslaughing, boasting, posturing. Mana flared openly. Blades hummed with enchantments.

Ryomen stepped forward among them, unassuming, his presence neatly folded in on itself.

No one noticed him.

Except

A dragonkin woman standing near the gate stiffened.

Her golden eyes narrowed.

That feeling…

An elf nearby paused mid-conversation, mana perception flaring instinctively.

Something is wrong with the flow.

High above, ward arrays shifted, recalculating something they could not define.

Ryomen felt it all and smiled faintly.

Good, he thought.

Let the academy be the place where fate trips over itself.

And somewhere deep beneath the world, something ancient turned in its sleep

and began to wake.
