Chapter 31 - Chapter 31:What?

The air in the subterranean vault was thick with the copper stench of stale blood and damp stone. Trailing behind Malakor, Kira stepped into a massive obsidian chamber. Heavy iron bars lined the walls, but inside these cages, the prisoners weren't physical animals—they were living, breathing shadows, their dark forms flickering weakly under the oppressive glow of violet paralysis seals hummed with suppressive magic.

As Kira walked past the rows of cages, his sharp eyes scanned the trapped beasts. Suddenly, his heart hardened. In one cage, a majestic Shadow Hawk lay pinned to the floor by iron spikes, its dark feathers molting into mist. In another, a massive, triple-tailed Shadow Panther let out a silent, choked roar.

Kira recognized them. These weren't wild monsters. These were the high-tier companions of renowned A-rank adventurers from the neighboring regions—loyal partners ripped away from their tamers through betrayal and dark magic.

"Magnificent, aren't they, my lord?" Malakor chuckled, his fat fingers caressing the iron bars of a cage holding a trembling shadow hound. "My associates went through immense trouble to harvest these beauties. Each one is a masterwork of umbral mana. So, tell me, Lord Yagami... which of these exquisite shadows catches your eye?"

Kira stopped, his face a flawless mask of aristocratic boredom. He lightly tapped his chin, looking at the merchant. "How much for the entire lot, Malakor? Name your price."

Malakor's greedy eyes widened, a sinister, ecstatic grin stretching across his face. "The entire vault? Ah, you possess the true appetite of a high noble! For all seventy-two high-tier specimens, along with their specialized control seals... it will be fifty million high-grade mana crystals. Not a copper less."

Kira took a step closer, leaning down until his lips were just inches from the merchant's ear. The arrogant, pampered noble persona vanished in an instant, replaced by a voice so cold it seemed to freeze the surrounding air.

"Fifty million crystals..." Kira whispered, his dark eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying malice. "How about you take a different payment? Die."

Malakor's smile froze. "Wh-what?"

Before the merchant could even process the word, Kira made a subtle, microscopic twitch of his fingers.

Schlikt!

A deafening chorus of wet, tearing sounds echoed through the vault simultaneously. In a fraction of a second, razor-sharp, invisible monomolecular wire strings—which Kira had silently woven throughout the entire chamber the exact moment he stepped past the threshold—snapped taut.

Malakor's head cleanly slid off his shoulders, his eyes still wide with uncomprehending greed as a fountain of blood erupted from his neck.

All around the upper ledges and hidden alcoves, the thirty-two elite guards didn't even have time to draw their weapons. Their heads and limbs were severed instantly, a horrific rain of blood splashing violently against the obsidian walls and pooling into the grooves of the stone floor.

Kira calmly flicked his wrists, pulling the bloody, invisible strings back into the specialized dispensers hidden within his sleeves. He looked around the crimson-stained room, smoothing the front of his spotless midnight-blue silk coat.

"Idiots," Kira muttered under his breath, his voice dripping with utter disdain. "You all didn't notice I already planned my move the very moment I entered. You thought you were watching a customer... you were just stepping into my web."

Deep within his mind, Iris's voice chimed in, filled with her signature playful satisfaction.

< System: Hostile entities neutralized. 33 targets eliminated in 0.4 seconds. Sasuga, Papa! Your string placement efficiency has increased by 15%! >

Kira didn't waste time celebrating. He stepped over Malakor's twitching corpse and walked toward the primary control console. Channeling a dense burst of his own mana, he slammed his hand onto the main runic anchor, shattering the core

With a loud, metallic hiss, the violet paralysis seals across all seventy-two cages shattered into dust. The heavy iron doors swung open.

The freed shadow beasts slowly stumbled out of their cells, their dark, ethereal forms expanding as their suppressed strength rushed back. They looked at Kira, their red eyes glowing not with feral rage, but with profound, intelligent gratitude. The Shadow Hawk bowed its majestic head toward him, and the triple-tailed panther let out a low, reverent purr, acknowledging the man who had broken their chains.

"Go," Kira said softly, his voice calm. "Return to your masters, or find your way back to the wild. You're free."

The Corrupted Fang

But as the tide of shadows began to flow toward the exit, a sudden, violent disturbance cut through the air.

From a dark, obscured cage at the very back of the vault—a cell Kira hadn't fully inspected—a feral, distorted shadow beast leaped forward with terrifying, blinding speed. It was a massive, skeletal Shadow Wolf, but its dark aura was twisted, pulsing with a sickening, toxic purple slime.

It wasn't a normal shadow beast. The syndicate had forcefully cross-bred and corrupted this particular creature, mixing the DNA of a slave beast with forbidden, experimental bio-toxins designed to create an uncontrollable weapon.

"What?!" Kira's eyes widened.

Instinctively, Kira reached deep into his consciousness to snap his fingers and call forth Alaska and his vanguard wolves to shield him. But his hand froze mid-air as a chilling realization struck him.

Damn it... I left them behind.

To maintain his perfect disguise as a pampered, non-combatant noble lord entering the high-security Undercroft, he had intentionally left Alaska and the eighty shadow wolves guarding the mini-mansion to protect Lyira, Marry, Shizu, Aoi, and Sofia from any potential retaliatory ambushes. For the first time, his shadow reservoir was completely empty.

Without his wolf shield, Kira brought his arms up in a desperate cross-block, channeling a raw kinetic barrier around his skin.

But the corrupted beast was frantic, driven mad by agony and chemical rage. It lunged straight through his hasty barrier, its jagged, venomous teeth sinking deep into Kira's left forearm.

Crunch!

Kira grunted in pain as the beast's fangs pierced through his expensive silk coat, biting deep into the flesh. A horrific, boiling black liquid instantly pumped from the wolf's glands straight into Kira's bloodstream.

With a roar of pure irritation, Kira channeled a massive kinetic shockwave through his injured arm, blasting the corrupted beast off him. The force was so immense that the wolf exploded into dark particles against the ceiling, neutralized permanently.

Kira stumbled backward, gripping his bleeding forearm. The puncture wounds were oozing a foul, dark green slime.

< System: Warning! Emergency! High-density 'Abyssal Hydra Venom' detected in the bloodstream! The toxin is heavily modified with anti-magic properties! >

< System: Activating Passive Skill: Poison Resistance (Rank Max). Counteracting cellular degradation... >

Kira leaned heavily against an obsidian pillar, his breathing suddenly turning ragged and shallow. Thanks to his Max-Rank Poison Resistance, the lethal toxin didn't liquefy his internal organs or kill him instantly as it would have any normal adventurer. His heart kept beating, fighting off the fatal core damage.

But the syndicate's toxin was cruelly engineered. It wasn't just meant to kill; it was packed with a heavy, concentrated neuro-paralytic sedative meant to subdue massive, high-tier monsters. Even with his immense resistance, the sheer volume of the chemical compound began to violently overload his nervous system.

"Step... back..." Kira growled out loud, his vision beginning to blur heavily. The edges of the vault started to spin, the crimson pools of blood on the floor distorting into shifting, grotesque shapes.

< System: Papa! The venom's sedative properties are bypassing the standard magical resistance vectors! Your cognitive functions are dropping rapidly! Please, you must force a mana circulation, Papa! Papa! >

Iris's voice, usually so steady and comforting, sounded distant, echoing as if she were shouting from the bottom of a deep well. Kira tried to channel his mana, but his pathways felt like they were filled with cold, heavy lead. His legs turned to water, and he collapsed to his knees, his hands barely holding his torso off the cold stone.

The Closing Shadows

Through his hazy, fading sight, Kira heard the heavy thud of footsteps echoing from the stone staircase.

He forced his head up, his eyelids heavy as blocks of stone. Through the dim, flickering torchlight and the mist of his failing vision, he saw them.

A group of figures was slowly walking into the blood-splattered vault. They weren't wearing the grey cloaks of the Gargoyle Syndicate mercenaries. Instead, they wore long, flowing, pitch-black ceremonial robes, their faces completely obscured by deep hoods embroidered with crimson, forbidden runes. They walked with absolute confidence, entirely unfazed by the slaughter of Malakor and his guards.

"Look at this mess," a deep, distorted voice echoed from beneath one of the black hoods, sounding entirely calm. "The boy truly is a monster. He wiped out the entire security force with a single movement of his fingers."

"It matters not," another robed figure replied, stepping over Malakor's headless body and stopping just a few feet away from where Kira lay paralyzed. "The experimental specimen did its job. The toxin has brought the fallen one to his knees. Load him into the transport before his elven harlots track his location."

Kira tried to snarl, tried to push himself up to rip their throats out, but his body completely refused to respond to his command. His arm felt entirely numb, the dark poison veining up toward his shoulder.

His vision began to narrow into a thin, dark tunnel. The last thing Kira Yagami saw before his consciousness completely shattered into absolute darkness was the cold, unfeeling stretch of a black-gloved hand reaching down toward his face.
