When making small talk, adults could usually find ways to discuss things not meant for children's ears. If all else failed, they could just drop the topic. It was just chitchat, after all. But he was hinting they should talk somewhere else.
Reading between the lines, the old man suddenly realized that his grandson, after working so hard to get on his good side and make him happy, had deliberately brought up this topic during their chat. He was clearly up to something.
'No wonder! This kid isn't the type to make small talk. Why would he suddenly start gossiping like this?'
'This little rascal! He has something on his mind but won't say it directly. Is he trying to play games with his own grandpa?'
"Come on, let's go over to your grandpa's."
