Chapter 33 - Chapter 32: When Permission Changes Hands

Army Headquarters is unnaturally quiet. No alarms. No shouting. Just the steady, rhythmic flickering of screens turning black. On the operation map, a jagged red line is drawn.

Operation Night Net — SUSPENDED

A junior officer whispers, his voice trembling, "Sir… the target is still active."

The General looks up slowly. "That is exactly why we are withdrawing."

He leans in, his voice dropping to a gravelly undertone. "If we move again, we don't just lose soldiers. We lose permission."

No more questions are asked.

The ARC Observation Room

Inside the ARC, the air is thick with the hum of servers. The live feed remains active.

Soul Fluctuation: Stable

Memory Distortion: Rising

Observer Anomaly: Persistent

"He isn't escalating," one technician notes.

"No," a senior analyst corrects. "He's synchronizing."

"With what?"

A long, heavy silence follows.

"With something that was never meant to reside within a human frame."

The final directive flashes on the primary monitor:

DO NOT PROVOKE THE DOLL.

No one looks up.

The Shift

The Blood Cult remains silent. They don't need to speak; they only listen. The Army has retreated. The ARC has fallen back. A strategist says quietly to the shadows, "Don't watch the movement. Watch who holds the permission now."

On the table sits a weathered piece of paper. Spelled incorrectly. Dates scratched out. The narrative is beginning to bend.

Eren walks.

Today, there are no drones. No sniper scopes. No checkpoints. He stops. He listens to the void. The realization hits him—they are gone.

Then, a darkness descends. Not a physical shadow, but a conceptual weight. A single line of text manifests in the periphery of his consciousness:

"You are no longer hunted. You are being allowed."

Allowed. The word feels jagged, ill-fitting. For the first time, he asks himself: "…for what?"

There is no verbal answer. But the wind seems to recoil, pulling back as if to clear a path. A final line flickers into existence:

For the next stage.

The Illusion of Peace

The city believes peace has returned.

The ARC believes the observation continues.

The Army believes they've cut their losses.

The Blood Cult believes the game has finally deepened.

And Eren?

He begins to understand a fundamental truth: It is easy to be an enemy. It is agonizing to be a Process.

Because a process is never stopped. A process is only completed.

Chapter End Hook

The day the prey is no longer hunted is the day he stops running—and begins to choose the battlefield himself.
