[CAIUS POV]
My mind went blank. Iris had asked a completely reasonable question, but I could not give her an answer that would satisfy me. I simply stared at her, my mouth moving wordlessly as though I would be hit with a sudden epiphany that would salvage the situation.
Why had I saved her? Well, that was easy enough to answer.
Because I didn't want her to die.
She was the visual representation of my father's infidelity. Seeing her reminded me of the exact reason why my mother was no longer with me. A better, less bitter man would want her dead so that she would no longer suffer, but I wanted her to live and feel pain at every waking moment, even if I had to share the same pain as well.
Rejecting her would permanently sever the tie between us and allow her to live out the rest of her life in peace. I instinctively balked at the thought.
