Chapter 7 - What's Happening ?

The following days stretched out into a blur of late mornings and sun-drenched afternoons, the heavy weight of the school year completely left behind. Yet, as the rhythm of her daily life shifted, so did the dynamics of the world she thought she knew.

It started with a text from her best friend.

[11:42 AM] You will not believe who just DM'ed me. The guy from third period. Your guy.

Sitting on her porch, she stared at the screenshot her friend sent. It was a classic, overly casual opening line, laced with a sudden, intense interest in her best friend's summer plans.

A month ago, seeing the boy she had pined over for two quarters actively pursuing her closest friend would have felt like a punch to the gut. It would have triggered hours of self-doubt and tearful late-night phone calls. But as she looked at the message now, she felt absolutely nothing. No jealousy, no sting, no resentment. It was as if she were looking at a stranger trying to strike up a conversation with another stranger.

[11:45 AM] Honestly? Go for it if you're interested. He's all yours.

Her best friend sent back a string of shocked emojis, clearly expecting an entirely different reaction. But her attention was already shifting. Another notification had popped up at the top of her screen—the familiar, comforting icon of her messaging app.

Lately, the tone of her conversations with her online friend had subtly drifted. The comfortable, easy-going banter about music and books had taken on a deeper, softer undertone. The responses came faster, the messages grew longer, and there was a new, palpable warmth in the way he spoke to her.

[11:47 AM] I passed by that old bookstore we talked about yesterday, his message read. I saw a copy of that poetry collection you mentioned, the one with the blue cover. I couldn't help but think of how much you'd love it. I actually bought it. I guess I'm holding onto it for you now.

Her heart did a sudden, unexpected flip—a sharp contrast to the cold indifference she had felt just moments before regarding her old crush. It wasn't just a casual conversation anymore. He was thinking about her when they weren't actively talking. He was looking at the world through the lens of her interests.

[11:50 AM] You bought it for me? You don't even know if we'll ever meet to trade it.

[11:51 AM] Then I guess I'll just have to keep it safe until we do. I don't mind waiting. Talking to you has become the best part of my day.

A flush of heat crept up her neck. The realization hit her with total clarity: he was starting to like her. Really like her. And the most terrifying, exhilarating part was that she felt exactly the same way. The bond they had built in the quiet spaces of the digital world felt entirely real, eclipsing everything else.

But the real world refused to completely fade into the background.

Later that afternoon, she walked down to the local corner store to grab a cold drink. As she stepped out onto the pavement, the familiar, unsettling sensation returned. She glanced across the street.

He was there. Standing near the bicycle racks, pretending to look at his phone, but his posture was completely directed toward her. When she caught his eye, he didn't look away immediately; he just offered a slow, deliberate nod before blending back into the passing crowd. The shadow was still there, refusing to disappear, a persistent reminder of the uncomfortable reality outside her screen.

She tightened her grip on her phone, turning her back on the street and heading straight home. The stalker was an annoyance, a lingering phantom of a school year she was desperate to leave behind. Her old crush was now just a footnote in her best friend's social life.

None of it mattered anymore. She unlocked her front door, stepped inside, and looked down at the glowing screen in her hand. The typing bubbles were already moving. She smiled, completely stepping out of the shadow and into the light of something entirely new.
