Chapter 6 - When Love Bleeds

Eliza screamed Aaron's name as he collapsed against her.

Blood soaked through his shirt, warm and terrifying.

"No… no, no, no," she whispered, pressing her hands to the wound. "You're not allowed to die. Not now."

Mara and Lillian dragged them into the trees as gunshots echoed behind them.

"Put pressure here," Lillian ordered, tearing cloth from her own dress. "The bullet missed his heart."

Eliza held the cloth with shaking hands.

Aaron's lips were pale. His breathing shallow.

"Hey," she said desperately. "You promised you'd protect me."

His eyes fluttered open. "Still… working on it."

She laughed and cried at the same time.

A Refuge of Ghosts

They hid in an abandoned church near the river.

Broken stained-glass windows painted the floor in dying colors.

Mara locked the doors.

Lillian checked Aaron's wound with surprising calm.

"I learned medicine before I married a monster," she said. "Before Victor turned me into a secret."

Eliza watched as Lillian stitched Aaron's skin.

"How long has he kept you?" Eliza asked.

"Twelve years," Lillian replied. "Twelve years of silence."

Aaron groaned.

"Eliza?" he whispered.

She ran to him.

"Don't go anywhere," he said.

She took his hand. "I'm not going anywhere."

The Weapon of Truth

When Aaron slept, Lillian sat with Eliza near the altar.

"There is something Victor never found," Lillian said.

"What?"

"A list," she whispered. "Not of deaths. Of buyers."

Eliza's heart raced. "You mean…"

"Every judge, politician, and corporation who bought weapons from him."

"That's power," Eliza said.

"That's war," Lillian corrected.

Lillian reached into her coat and pulled out a small metal pendant.

Inside was a microchip.

"Eliza… your mother hid this in me," she said.

Eliza's breath stopped.

"She knew Victor would erase her. So she gave me the truth."

Eliza held the pendant like it was her mother's heart.

"This ends him," she whispered.

Eliza Breaks

Later that night, Eliza stood alone outside.

She punched the brick wall until her knuckles bled.

"He took my mother," she whispered.

"He took my editor."

"He almost took you."

Aaron limped to her.

He wrapped his arms around her from behind.

"You don't get to face this alone," he said.

She turned and hit his chest weakly.

"Don't scare me like that!"

"I didn't mean to get shot," he said with a faint smile.

She cried against him.

"I don't know how to fight a man who owns everything."

Aaron lifted her chin. "You fight him with the one thing he can't buy."

"What?"

"Truth."

Victor Hale's Mistake

Far away, Victor Hale stood in a glass office above the city.

"They should be dead," he said calmly.

"They escaped," his assistant replied.

Victor smiled. "Good. Fear sharpens people. It will make her reckless."

"And Lillian?"

Victor's eyes darkened. "She should have stayed buried."

A New Purpose

At dawn, Aaron could walk again.

Mara gathered survivors from her shelter.

Women Victor had broken.

Men he had used.

Eliza stood before them.

"We are not victims," she said. "We are witnesses."

Lillian stepped forward.

"And witnesses speak."

Eliza held up the pendant.

"My mother died for this. I won't let it be wasted."

The room filled with silent fire.

The Promise

That night, Aaron and Eliza sat together.

"If we win," Eliza said softly, "what will you do?"

He thought. "Disappear. Learn how to live."

She smiled. "With me?"

He kissed her forehead. "If you'll have me."

She closed her eyes. "I already do."

Outside, the city waited.

And Victor Hale had no idea…

He had just created

the woman who would destroy him.
