Chapter 63: Who Robs a Museum?

The tour of the academy took forty minutes and covered three floors, a greenhouse that Rango was told housed botanical specimens and which smelled like something that had opinions about visitors, a library with a restricted section that Fiona described as aspirational for current students, and a ritual space in the basement that had the specific atmosphere of a room that took its job seriously.

Fiona narrated all of it with the polish of someone who had given this tour many times and still believed in what she was showing.

"Telekinesis, mind control, astral projection, shapeshifting," she said, facing Rango primarily, with the Addams in her peripheral attention. "Those are the foundational competencies. Every student works toward mastery of all four before advanced coursework."

"And a Supreme Witch?" Rango asked.

Fiona's smile did something that wasn't quite pride and wasn't quite warning. "Raising the dead," she said. "Among other things. That's not a figure of speech."

"I assumed not."

He glanced at Morticia, who was examining the botanical greenhouse with the attentive appreciation of someone comparing notes on their own collection. Gomez was asking the architecture questions about load-bearing walls with genuine structural curiosity. Wednesday was at the back of the group, saying nothing, observing everything, with Thing perched on her shoulder cataloguing whatever Thing catalogued.

"Emma's situation," Rango said, keeping his voice level and away from the Addams's earshot. "She came in with existing contamination. Azazel's influence, pre-birth, the seven deadly sins amplified and embedded at a foundational level. That's the primary reason she's here."

Fiona nodded. "I'm aware. Amos's letter was specific."

"Can you address it?"

"Not remove it," she said, honestly, which he appreciated. "But contain it, channel it, give her the tools to operate alongside it rather than against it." A pause. "The seven deadly sins are the most powerful catalyst for witchcraft that exists. A witch who can harness them rather than be driven by them —" She looked at him carefully. "Emma has potential that I've seen in perhaps four students in thirty years."

Rango said nothing to that.

He filed it, the way he filed everything — complete, unprocessed, waiting for context.

"I have no more questions," he said, and went upstairs to say goodbye.

The room had settled into its own ecology in the hour he'd been gone.

Wednesday occupied her corner — cross-legged on the bed, two blades on the coverlet beside her, working a whetstone along one edge with the patient rhythm of someone for whom this was both maintenance and meditation. Her expression had the particular quality of a storm system that has decided to hold its position.

Emma occupied her corner — Little Red Riding Hood dress still on, because she'd apparently decided to commit to the aesthetic for the day, working through the cleaning and function-check of the hunting knife Rango had shown her three weeks ago. Methodical. Focused. The way she did everything she'd decided to take seriously.

Megan was making the bed with architectural precision.

Thing was on the windowsill, watching the street below with the alert stillness of something on watch.

The room smelled like gun oil and whetstone and the faint cedar of the wardrobes, and had the quality of a place that had already negotiated its terms.

Rango sat beside Emma.

She didn't look up immediately. Finished the section she was on, then set the knife down and looked at him.

"You're leaving," she said. Not a question.

"Yeah." He put one hand on the top of her head, briefly. "I'll be back. That's not a thing I say — that's a schedule."

Emma looked at the window. At the darkening Boston evening outside it. At some middle distance that wasn't quite the window and wasn't quite the room.

The disappointment on her face was the specific kind that doesn't perform itself — just present, quiet, real.

He stayed with it for a moment without trying to fix it.

Then he stood, caught Ted's eye, nodded toward the door.

"Wednesday," he said, on the way out.

Wednesday looked up from the whetstone.

"She takes things seriously," he said. "Same as you. Just differently organized."

Wednesday looked at Emma. Looked at Rango. Said nothing, which from Wednesday Addams appeared to be a form of acknowledgment.

He pulled the door closed behind him.

In the hallway, Ted fell into step beside him without being asked.

"She'll be fine," Ted said.

"I know."

"You know I know that too."

"I know that too."

They went downstairs.

The goodbye with the Addams was warm on Gomez's side, gracious on Morticia's, and conducted from a distance that had narrowed back to something almost normal but not entirely. Rango shook Gomez's hand. Nodded to Morticia.

Gomez held the handshake one beat longer than necessary.

"Tuesday," he said. "The Kraken surfaces Tuesdays. Open invitation."

"I'll hold you to it," Rango said.

McQueen materialized at the curb with the timing of something that had been paying attention.

They got in.

The academy receded in the rearview mirror — white villa, lit windows on the third floor, the Boston evening doing its thing around it.

Rango watched the light in the third-floor window until the road curved and took it away.

Behind them, in the academy's front hall, Fiona stood at the window and watched McQueen's taillights disappear around the corner.

The warmth left her face the way warmth leaves a room when the fire goes out — not dramatically, just completely, the temperature dropping back to what it actually was.

She'd known about the Supreme Witch curse since before she'd inherited the title. Knew it the way you know about a disease in your family — abstractly at first, then personally, then as the organizing fact of every decision you made.

When a new Supreme Witch came into her power, the previous one declined. Magic, vitality, youth — all of it transferred, the way water finds its level. The natural order, some of the older texts called it. The older Supreme Witches who'd written those texts had also, notably, all died young.

Fiona had not died young.

She had been Supreme Witch for thirty-one years, which was not the record but was notable. She had maintained it through the understanding that the natural order was a description, not a requirement, and that descriptions could be edited if you were willing to do the work.

The work, in practice, meant identifying candidates early.

She'd had seven over the years. None of them had completed their potential. That wasn't an accident.

She looked up at the third-floor window.

Two candidates. In the same room. At the same time.

The Addams girl she couldn't touch — Morticia's founding status with the Witch Association made Wednesday effectively untouchable, the institutional equivalent of diplomatic immunity. Moving against Wednesday Addams would bring down consequences Fiona had no interest in managing.

But the Winchester girl.

The Winchester family had been formidable once. Anderson Winchester's reputation still meant something in certain rooms. But Anderson was gone. Pete and Louise were gone. What remained was a young man with a consecrated Colt and a talking car and an inherited name that made people step backward at parties.

Not nothing. But not what it had been.

She lit a cigarette — a habit she'd had for sixty years that had never once affected her health, which was one of the benefits of the arrangement — and exhaled slowly.

The plan was simple in outline. Train Emma carefully, bring her potential to full expression, and then, at the right moment, do what she'd done seven times before.

The Winchester boy would come back, of course. He'd said so. But by then—

The cigarette burned down between her fingers.

She'd have to be careful with the timing. More careful than usual, because the boy was clearly competent and clearly paying attention, and the grandfather's name on that recommendation letter meant Amos was watching through a long lens.

But careful was something she was very good at.

She turned from the window and went back inside, the warmth returning to her face as automatically as a light switching on.

Thirty-one years.

She had not survived thirty-one years by being impatient.

[New York Natural History Museum. Two days later.]

The after-hours museum had settled into its own version of a Tuesday evening.

Exhibits were out of their cases. The Roman centurions had claimed the east wing, where the acoustics were better and Octavius had opinions about the layout that he'd been sharing for forty-five minutes. The Neanderthals were doing something in the natural history wing that involved the large topographic display and a level of enthusiasm that Rango had learned not to investigate directly. A cluster of smaller figures from the miniatures case had commandeered the computer at the information desk and were deep in something on the screen.

Rango came around the corner to find Octavius and Ted in heated debate over the monitor, with Jedediah sitting on the keyboard eating something he'd gotten from the vending machine.

"—the point," Octavius was saying, with the rhetoric of a man who had given speeches that moved armies, "is that the narrative structure is completely derivative of Homer—"

"It's Ghostbusters," Ted said. "It's not trying to be Homer."

"Everything is trying to be Homer. That's the nature of—"

"Gentlemen," Rango said.

They looked up.

"Why is the computer screen full of—" he squinted — "is that a Supernatural fan forum?"

"We were doing research," Octavius said with dignity.

"On Supernatural."

"On the Winchester Family," Ted said, with the specific tone of a man who had been waiting for this moment. "Specifically whether Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural are based on any real documented hunters, which I maintain is a legitimate research question given recent developments."

Rango looked at the screen. At the forum thread titled Are the Winchesters REAL? (Evidence thread, no debunking please).

He looked at Ted.

"Close it," he said.

"I'm just saying—"

"Close it, Ted."

Jedediah, still on the keyboard, swallowed a chip. "The tall one does look a bit like you, boss."

"Close. It."

The screen went dark.

In the relative quiet that followed, Rango leaned against the desk and rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands.

Two days since Boston. He'd called Emma twice — both times she'd answered promptly, reported that the coursework was interesting in the tone she used for things she found genuinely interesting, mentioned that Wednesday had asked three questions about the museum dinosaurs, and then said goodbye before the conversation could become sentimental, which was an approach he respected.

He'd called Amos once. Told him about Fiona.

Amos had been quiet for a long time.

Then he'd said: Watch that one. She's been Supreme Witch for thirty years and the math doesn't work.

Rango had said he knew.

Amos had said: The math never lies about these things. Find out what the math is hiding.

He was still working on that.

The front door of the museum exploded inward.

Not metaphorically. The main entrance — solid hardwood, reinforced frame, original 1874 ironwork hardware — came off its hinges with the specific violence of something that had not knocked first and had no intention of starting now. Debris scattered across the marble foyer. The door itself ended up eight feet inside the building, which was not where doors were supposed to be.

Through the opening, in a cloud of dust and what had recently been the door frame, walked two figures.

Rango was on his feet before the echo finished.

The figures resolved as the dust settled: broad, heavy, moving with the blunt confidence of things that did not anticipate resistance. One had the rough, gray-skinned architecture of something built around a rhinoceros's structural logic. The other had the low-set, bristled quality of something that had arrived at humanoid form through a boar's evolutionary history and hadn't fully committed to the transition.

They looked around the foyer with the casual assessment of people who had arrived somewhere they intended to be.

The rhinoceros one's eyes found Rango.

"Winchester," it said. The voice had the quality of something that had learned English from recordings and practiced it without ever hearing it used naturally.

"That's me," Rango said. His hand was already at his back. "And you're in my museum."

The boar one looked at the exhibits — at the centurions who had frozen in place, at the miniatures scrambling behind the desk, at Ted on the information counter watching with the stillness of someone calculating.

"Nice place," it said, with the tone of someone who did not think it was a nice place and wanted you to know that. "Be a shame."

"If you finish that sentence," Rango said, "I'm going to take it personally."

The rhinoceros one reached into its coat — and produced not a weapon but a sealed envelope, which it held out with the deliberate patience of something that had been given a job and intended to complete it before anything else happened.

Rango looked at the envelope.

Looked at the two figures.

Looked at the door that was no longer a door.

"You could have knocked," he said.

"We did," the boar one said. "With our bodies."

"That's not—" He exhaled. "Fine."

He crossed the foyer, took the envelope, broke the seal.

Inside: a single card, heavy stock, no letterhead. Four lines of text in a handwriting he didn't recognize.

Mr. Winchester —

You have something that belongs to our collection.

We'd like to discuss its return.

— The Acquisitions Office

Rango read it twice.

Looked up at the two figures.

"What collection?"

The rhinoceros one smiled, which was a significant undertaking given its face.

"That," it said, "is what they'd like to discuss."

Ted appeared at Rango's shoulder, having covered the distance from the information desk in a path that had taken him behind three exhibit cases and around the perimeter, which was the intelligent route.

He looked at the card. Looked at the two figures. Looked at the destroyed door.

"Back in Ghana," he said, to Rango, at a volume calibrated for Rango alone, "when someone wanted a meeting, they sent an email."

"Different world," Rango said.

"Apparently," Ted said. "Should I get McQueen?"

Rango looked at the rhinoceros. At the boar. At the card with no letterhead and no return address and a name — The Acquisitions Office — that meant nothing to him yet, which meant it meant something to someone else, which meant he needed to find out what before that became a problem.

"Not yet," he said.

He folded the card. Put it in his pocket.

Looked at the two figures.

"Tell your employers I'll be in touch," he said. "And tell them next time, they send an email. This —" he gestured at the door — "comes out of their deposit."

The rhinoceros and boar looked at each other.

Then, without further comment, they turned and walked back out through the opening that had recently been a door, into the New York night, with the unhurried confidence of things that had delivered their message and considered their job complete.

Rango stood in the foyer.

The museum was very quiet around him — exhibits frozen in place, everyone waiting.

Then Octavius, from somewhere in the east wing, called out: "Is it safe?"

"For now," Rango said.

The museum exhaled. The centurions resumed their argument. The miniatures came out from behind the desk. Jedediah went back to the vending machine chips.

Ted looked at the open doorway. At the Boston trip two days ago. At the card in Rango's pocket. At the totem on Rango's palm that had been running warm since the rhinoceros and boar walked in and hadn't cooled yet.

"We need a bigger list," Ted said.

"We need a better door," Rango said.

"Also that."

He pulled out his phone and called Amos.

It rang twice.

"Something came to the museum tonight," Rango said, when Amos picked up. "Delivered a card. Called themselves the Acquisitions Office." A pause. "Tell me you know what that is."

Amos's silence had the quality of recognition.

"Lock the building," he said. "Don't respond to the card yet. I'll be there in the morning."

"That bad?"

"That complicated," Amos said. "Which in our work, yes, is the same thing."

He hung up.

Rango looked at the open doorway, at the city beyond it, at whatever was out there that had decided the Winchester name was a useful address to know.

"Ted," he said.

"Yeah."

"Call a carpenter."
