Chapter 1 - THE DAY I LEFT MY HOME

"It was back then. After my mother had died, I became a servant of the Gremory house. I am Lily Gremory, the illegitimate child of the Lord of this land. My mother was a maid here; he forced her into sleeping with him. After I was born, my mother fell ill, but still she worked here, for my sake, though my father didn't care for me at all.

After I turned five, my mother died. At that age, I started working here too, as a servant, doing little chores. There was my half-sister, who was born from the Lord's wife; she was two years younger than me. She got all she wanted: mother's love, proper food, nice dresses. Honestly, I envied her.

After I turned ten, my father started treating me well.He gifted me nice dresses, a personal room with a comfy bed. For the first time in my life, I got to eat all the tasty food I wanted to try. But my little sister didn't like me; neither did her mother. They abused me for saying that I didn't belong there, but I never raised my voice against them. I simply endured it.

After I turned twelve, I got to know why my father was treating me well. I was getting a proper education; I didn't have to do house chores. And the reason was, I was beautiful – my dark hair and my beautiful black eyes. One nobleman's child had taken a liking to me, and he wanted to marry me. Though I never saw his face, I was happy.

My father and his father were discussing that when I turned fifteen, we would be engaged, and I would be sent to their estate to live there and have my lady training. I never knew how he saw me and felt that he had to marry me, but I was glad. I had thought that when I met him, I was going to thank him for saving my life.

After I turned fifteen, that day finally came when I left this house. The carriage was waiting outside; my belongings were already sent to my new house, where I had to spend my whole life. I didn't know what awaited me, but whatever came to me, I would try to survive.

When I sat in the carriage, only my father came to see me off. My mother and sister had stopped talking to me since the day when the meeting was held, that I would marry a nobleman's son. There was only a single maid who really cared for me, and that was Marie. Though I couldn't hug her in front of others, else they would start treating her harshly too, we saw each other eye to eye and smiled. With this, I said goodbye to the Gremory family."
