The First Angel War.
This refers to the war that took place from Talos Calendar Year 5 to Year 15, fought between humanity and hostile forces primarily composed of Angels.
With Year 11 as the dividing line, it can be split into two phases—
In the first phase, the defining features were the mass disasters caused by Angels and the chaos on the human side.
Within 24 hours of the war's outbreak, a huge number of anchor points appeared without warning. Massive Angel swarms flooded and destroyed humanity's earliest city on Talos-II, which had been built around the northern Star Gate.
They completely occupied the Arctic region—and may have triggered "Talos-II's aurora" by means still unknown today.
The following six years were defined by a grim pattern: the surviving humans, crushed by Angel pressure, retreated south again and again, continuously losing their technological assets along the way.
That was the first half of the Angel War.
Only in Talos Calendar Year 11 did the then-Administrator assist the remaining human forces in reorganizing. Humanity finally became capable of resisting Angel incursions with some degree of effectiveness.
Which meant the war entered its second half.
And after a major military operation in Talos Calendar Year 15, Angel activity in the south was finally brought under meaningful control.
Major events of that era also included: the arrival of the colossal beast Sami, the "Wild Hunt Day" raised by Sami's people, and the founding of the Iron Oath Army, among others.
For humanity, the primary Angel disasters and wartime operations ended by late Year 15, so some people regard Year 15 as the end of the First Angel War.
Others argue that it was only in Year 17, with the establishment of the Civilization Ring, that the war could be considered truly concluded.
But even if the war had ended—
The Angel threat never went away.
...
Talos Calendar Year 152.
Hub District Base, Central Control Tower area.
Hao Fan used a floating crate to put himself up high, where he had a clear view of the field.
He'd discovered the crate's function earlier, back when he'd been wandering the base with nothing to do—
Press a switch, and the crate would hover slightly, follow an operator, and serve as a portable step stool to reach elevated positions for long-range attacks from above.
So after taking command, Hao Fan immediately had the snipers and casters use the floating crates to get up onto obstacles and higher ground.
Meanwhile, the guards and defenders stayed below the obstacles as bait, maintaining the original temporary defensive line.
In other words: it was basically the kind of positioning you'd use in Arknights, with Rhodes Island operators.
This way, the enemy would take fire from multiple angles at once.
Sounds a bit naïve, right?
But in practice it worked surprisingly well. The collapsing defensive line stabilized instantly.
That was largely thanks to the enemy being brainless Angels—creatures that prioritized attacking whatever was directly in front of them, ignoring threats above.
If the enemy were something like a Landbreaker, Hao Fan would never use this tactic. Without cover, anyone standing high up would just be a live target.
Still, purely in terms of raw combat difficulty, Angels—monsters that didn't fear death—were far more troublesome than Landbreakers.
"Big-Horn Angels… If that's all we're facing, then holding the line won't be a problem."
As the "commander," Hao Fan watched the overall situation through the Game Map.
Earlier, while chatting with Miguel, he'd found a copy of Angel Classification Encoding Standards in the man's clinic—a reference book documenting different Angel types.
It included the bull-like Big-Horn Angels currently charging them—
"Kleioson" (Archive Code: ACL071), capable of ramming targets with its horns.
They were one of the earliest recorded Angel formation modes, and relatively common everywhere.
Put simply: bottom-tier trash mobs among Angels—roughly equivalent to Originium Slugs in Arknights.
Except Big-Horn Angels hit far harder than slugs ever could. Their bodies were mineral rock, their brute strength inhuman—absolutely not something ordinary people could handle.
Bullets from handguns against them were basically a massage.
So the only option was to mob them down.
"Medics—watch the defenders' status. Prioritize healing them."
"Guards and vanguards—use coordinated tactics. Alternate attacks, cover each other. Watch your rhythm and stamina."
"Snipers and casters—get down from the high ground first. The next wave will include Spike Angels. Don't let those monsters catch you."
Hao Fan used the tactical comms, issuing one instruction after another in a calm, organized manner. His steady voice was reassuring.
The Spike Angels he mentioned were another Angel formation mode—
"Kentoron" (Archive Code: ARL121), able to energize the matter that composes its body and throw that energy outward by inertial means.
Its energy efficiency was low, but it still counted as a ranged method—and it could injure operators standing on elevated positions.
That was why Hao Fan ordered the snipers and casters down—to focus fire together on these scorpion-like Spike Angels.
And this style of combat—predicting enemy numbers and routes every time, like he could see the future—
It was practically Babel's evil spirit.
Qin Jiangchi, who had handed over command, was deeply shaken.
She'd assumed he was just a bizarre coin-flinging oddball—she never expected he had real skill.
She'd never seen a commander this capable in her life!
As for the truth?
Hao Fan was absolutely getting forced into it.
When Qin Jiangchi suddenly handed him command, and the next Angel wave hit at the same time, he had no time to argue—he could only grit his teeth and do it.
Otherwise, the security personnel holding the line might start taking deaths, and the situation would spiral further.
Fortunately, he was performing… pretty well.
So far, it looked like it would be fine—
"Damn—there's a big one!"
Hao Fan's expression tightened as a rhino-like Angel with two pairs of horns thundered toward them—
A Hard-Horn Angel.
"Tilisolon" (Archive Code: ACL072), a non-standard variant of ACL071.
Not only was it several times larger than Big-Horn Angels, it could also use the surrounding environment to display a certain level of decision-making.
In other words, the previous waves were probably being directed by this thing.
After failing to break the line for so long, the big one that had been lurking behind the swarm finally decided to enter the field itself.
And in a single opening charge, it sent the front-line defender flying. They couldn't hold it at all.
"Fall back behind cover—we need to reform the line!"
Seeing that, the other security personnel turned pale with fear, instinctively wanting to retreat.
Against a higher-tier, evolved enemy like this, they were simply outmatched.
Big-Horn and Spike Angels were already the limit of what they could handle.
"This is bad—the temporary line has a breach!"
Cold sweat beaded on Hao Fan's forehead.
There were far too many wounded inside the Central Control Tower. He absolutely couldn't let a monster like that break in—or the casualties would be catastrophic.
Just as he was scrambling for an answer, he suddenly saw a black-haired girl wearing a black eye-mask vault past the security personnel and rush straight to the front—
"Huh? Where'd this penguin come from?"
(And in Hao Fan's eyes, she really did look like a cute, dazed penguin.)
