Chapter 7 - First Voice

Am I even human?

Seeing the question mark and the comment, "you need nothing more."

Not to mention the designation of blade made him question it.

He had wanted to reject the idea, but now. He took a deep breath.

"It doesn't matter," he lightly slapped his cheek. "All that matters is I am me, even if in a different body, even if it's a different race. As long as I am me, nothing else matters." Thren said aloud, as if trying to convince the system or perhaps himself as there was no one else on the roof.

"Let's see what else you have." The screen flickered to display skills.

Hmm, Thren hummed upon reading the text.

He was familiar with Phantom agility, but the rest were new.

Most likely from levelling up.

The skills were pretty straightforward in explanation except for Legacy Gravitas. How does it scale compared to carnage. And what sort of effect does it have on the so called them. Who are them? So many questions.

But I doubt anyone will answer, He mumbled sarcastically, trying to provoke a response out of the system.

But of course it didn't respond, causing him to roll his eyes.

I guess tier should be similar to talent or in this case power. And I agree, as he looked at the B tier in front of phantom Agility. After all with just it, he was able to slay a couple of neophytes.

Even though he had the element of surprise, and they were quite confused, after all there was no skill that produced afterimages, not in Gunlag anyway.

If they had known, the fight wouldn't have gone so easily.

No, I'll have most likely died.

That shows how important information is in battle.

He grinned, but I won fair and square, after all what was that saying that grandma used to say again.

His eyes squinted as he rubbed his chin with all seriousness, trying to remember. All is fair in...

War and love.

But if a D tier could do something like that, I'm looking forward to an S tier skill. He looked back at the screen.

What exactly is this voice. It seems pretty important.

As if reading his mind, the screen instantly flickered to something else.

«HUMANITY HAS DECIDED TO LEND YOU THEIR STRENGTH, USE IT WISELY»

"Okay…" Thren dragged the words as he slowly nodded his head.

«One C tier voice unsealed»

«Two D tier voices unsealed»

Voices

[Zara {D tier}

Job: Singer]

[Shimron {D tier}

Job: Thug]

[Sullivan the mad alchemist {C tier}

Job: Alchemist

{A mad man who felt like a god but was just another frog in a well, just a tad bit more enlightened}

Activation possible]

»

Thren felt his brow twitch as he read the description of the so called Sullivan.

Wasn't this a system from Humanities will, so why does it feel like it hates humanity?

[I am unbiased] that monotonous voice rang out once more.

Of course you respond, but when I need you, you decide to go AWOL.

Silence.

Thren scanned the voices properly this time, the two D tier voices were sort of blurry, almost like someone used low quality rendering to design them. There colors were dull, almost like the system considered them...

[Benign]

Exactly.

Sullivan's card was a bit improved, but not too much. Asides from the longer title and comment, it had a yellow color added at the rim, almost like someone just poured color to make it stand out a bit.

[Of course, even though he is useless as well, he gained a little enlightenment to be considered superior.]

Thren simply shook his head and choose to keep his comments, since the system would most likely not answer.

"So what do this voices do?"

[Was the introduction not clear enough?] The voice came sharp and almost disappointed.

Thren rolled his eyes, I never learn.

Lend their strength to me huh. And since it is showing jobs, I am guessing if I activate, I should be able to use their skills, or at least that's my hypothesis.

But why does only Sullivan have the activation possible tag. I am guessing it has something with the being benign or so.

Activate Sullivan.

Instantly, a new row was added to the screen.

[Active Voices: 1/1]

«Sullivan the mad alchemist

Job: Alchemist

Activated»

The next second his essence dropped by 1.

Then another one the next second, and another the next second.

Thren frowned. He didn't suddenly feel powerful or gain any extra knowledge on alchemy, aside from the basic changing one thing to another of course. So...

"Its not changing, it's exchange." A tired voice rang out causing Thren to quickly seat up and scan around.

"Who said that?"

"This is so exhausting," The voice came again in his head.

"Sullivan?" Thren muttered.

"Who else."

Thren's eyes widened, "holy shit."

It wasn't skills, it was literally the person's voice or soul, who knows.

Except there was someone who did.

"I don't." The response came before he asked.

Of course you can also read my thoughts.

"So what can you do? Do you like posses me or what?"

"Of course not. Normally I'd have active skills, but he judged my skills as trash," the voice sighed.

"So I guess I'm useless, don't waste your essence."

"Who is he?"

But the response never came as Thren suddenly felt lightheaded.

«Essence below threshold»

«Active Voices: 0/0»

Huh, Thren's eyes moved to his essence stat.

«5/46»

"An essence per second huh. But it's fair." He grinned at the possibilities.

Imagine all the warriors, the kings, the human generals of the past. Imagine the knowledge he could gain. His grin widened at the thought.

But first he had to increase this so called sync level, he had to get stronger to access them. After all he was sure the higher tier the voice, the more the cost would be.

Looking over the vast city of Gunlag below, Thren spread his hands, feeling a bit more optimistic.

"Perhaps I actually have a chance after all."

The next second, red pixels crawled over his vision, forming something which made his eyes went round, his face scrunched up in a mixture of disbelief and fear.

"What in that actual hell?"
