Chapter 79 - Chapter 79 — Moonlight Whispers

The dawn after the bond ceremony was quiet. The forest glimmered with dew, and the air was crisp, filled with the scent of pine and wet earth. Shadowfang territory was alive with renewed energy — wolves training, repairing dens, and cautiously exploring parts of the forest previously restricted by the Hollow King's curse.

Nyra walked along a winding path near the cliff's edge, Kael silently following her. They didn't speak immediately, letting the sounds of the forest fill the space between them.

Finally, Nyra broke the silence. "It's strange… how peaceful it feels. After everything, I almost expected it to be… empty."

Kael's gaze softened, golden eyes fixed on her. "Peace isn't emptiness. It's earned. And you earned this, Nyra."

She glanced at him, a faint blush coloring her cheeks under the soft morning light. "We earned this… together."

Kael smiled, taking her hand in his, thumb brushing lightly over hers. "Together," he agreed.

They paused near a small clearing where the first younglings of the pack were playing under the watchful eyes of their mothers. Wolves who had survived the Hollow King's terror now laughed and tumbled over each other, oblivious to fear for the first time.

Nyra crouched, letting a small black-and-silver pup sniff her fingers. "They'll never know the fear we carried," she whispered. "Not fully. But I hope they'll grow strong… unbroken."

Kael knelt beside her, letting his hand hover over her shoulder. "They'll learn from you. From us. Strength tempered with compassion."

The two sat together in silence, watching the younglings run beneath the soft sunlight. The bond between them pulsed faintly, a warm energy wrapping around their shared presence.

Nyra leaned her head against Kael's shoulder. "Do you ever wonder… what comes next?"

Kael's jaw tightened slightly, his gaze drifting toward the distant forest. "I do. Not just the Hollow King's remnants… but other packs, challenges we can't see yet. Shadows never vanish completely."

Nyra lifted her head to meet his eyes, determination flashing in her silver gaze. "Then we'll face them. Together. Nothing else matters if the pack is safe."

Kael nodded, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Nothing else," he agreed.

The wind shifted, carrying the faint scent of rain and the forest beyond. Somewhere in the distance, a lone wolf howled — a reminder that the world outside Shadowfang was still vast, unpredictable, and full of possibilities.

Nyra squeezed Kael's hand. "I think… I think we've earned this moment," she said softly. "The calm, the quiet… just for us."

Kael smiled, resting his forehead against hers. "We'll take as many of these moments as we can get," he murmured.

And for the first time in centuries, under the clear light of the Blood Moon fading to a soft silver crescent, Shadowfang's heirs allowed themselves a quiet breath — the calm before a future they would shape together.
