Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: INCARNATE PASSION

The pain was immediate and absolute.

The crystal liquefied beneath Maxime's fingers, becoming a luminous pink substance that coiled around his arm like a living serpent. It crawled across his skin, burning and freezing at the same time, climbing toward his shoulder, his chest, his heart.

He screamed.

Nyx rushed toward him, but an invisible barrier slammed into her violently. She crashed into the chamber wall with a dull impact.

"MAXIME!"

He couldn't answer. The substance reached his heart and plunged in.

Memories that were not his exploded in his mind like supernovas.

A goddess with hair of flame, naked in his arms, moaning his name with religious devotion.

A divine banquet where every gaze cast upon him was laden with desire, covetousness, obsession.

Battles where his enemies hesitated, unsettled by his mere presence, their concentration shattered by an attraction they could not control.

Temples erected in his honor, where thousands of mortals celebrated love, desire, passion — all in his name.

And at the center of it all, one fundamental truth: he was Eros. Desire made flesh. The incarnation of the primordial need for connection, possession, fusion.

The Fragment integrated.

[FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: INCARNATE PASSION (2/8)]

[Divinity: 14% → 28%]

[TRANSFORMATION IN PROGRESS…]

Maxime's body arched, his back lifting from the ground as a pink light enveloped him completely. His muscles contracted, redefined themselves. His skin glowed with an inner radiance. His eyes — had he been able to see them — shifted from ordinary brown to a deep violet streaked with gold.

The light faded.

Maxime collapsed onto the floor, gasping. Every cell in his body vibrated with new energy. He felt… different. Stronger, yes. But also more aware. Aware of the warmth of Nyx's body through the barrier. Aware of the jasmine scent still lingering in the air. Aware of his own desire — not sexual, not exactly, but something broader. A desire for connection, influence, possession.

He rose slowly. His movements were fluid, almost feline. Every gesture seemed calculated to draw the eye.

The barrier fell.

Nyx rushed to him, her hands framing his face, searching his eyes with palpable concern.

"Maxime?" Her voice trembled. "Is it really you?"

He smiled. A smile that wasn't entirely his — too confident, too charming.

"Who else would it be?"

But his voice had changed. Deeper. Richer. Every syllable seemed to caress the air.

Nyx stepped back, and he felt her emotion through their Link. Wariness. Apprehension. But also… something else. A heightened attraction, almost involuntary.

"What's happening to me?" he asked, and this time his voice carried a note of vulnerability. "I feel… strange."

"The fragment." Nyx crossed her arms, creating physical distance between them. "It amplifies your divine nature. Eros was the embodiment of Desire. Every aspect of him — his appearance, his voice, his movements — was designed to attract, to seduce." She looked at him with a mix of fascination and caution. "And now, part of that is in you."

Maxime looked down at his hands. They seemed the same, yet at the same time… different. More beautiful, perhaps. Or perhaps it was only his perception that had changed.

"Do I control it?"

"With time." Nyx approached cautiously, as one would approach a wild animal. "But for now, you are… dangerous. Not cruel. Just… influential." She placed a hand on his chest, just above his heart where the fragment had plunged in. "Everyone you meet will feel that pull. Some will resist it. Many won't."

The chamber door opened behind them. Bastet stood in the doorway, and her expression had completely changed. Her green eyes were dilated, her breathing slightly faster. Her tail lashed the air restlessly.

"Oh." The word came out like a purr. "Oh, you're magnificent now."

She stepped forward, each movement predatory and deliberate. But something was different in her approach. Before, she had been the hunter. Now she seemed… uncertain. Drawn despite herself.

"The fragment truly took." She stopped a meter away, visibly fighting the urge to come closer. "Your Charisma…" She licked her lips. "It's almost at my level now. Seventy-four. Impressive for a level 8 god."

Maxime felt something in him react to her presence. Not raw sexual desire, but acute awareness. He knew instinctively that if he wanted to — if he reached out, if his fingers brushed her skin — she would react. She could resist, but it would cost her effort.

"I want to leave." He stepped back, putting distance between himself and Bastet. "Now."

The cat goddess blinked, as if coming out of a trance. Her expression hardened, regaining a semblance of control.

"Of course. You passed my trials. The fragment is yours." She gestured, and a door of golden light appeared in the wall. "That door will take you back to the temple entrance." Her gaze slid toward Nyx. "Your guardian is waiting outside. Or rather… she was waiting."

Nyx frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Bastet smiled, but it wasn't a friendly smile.

"It means you weren't the only one watching him. The Council of Gods sent an emissary." She sat gracefully on the edge of the basin. "He's waiting outside with a small army."

Maxime's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

"Ares." The name came out like venom spat on the ground. "The Greek god of War. And he didn't come to talk."

Nyx cursed in an ancient language Maxime didn't understand, but whose violence he felt.

"How many soldiers?"

"A dozen divine warriors. Levels fifteen to twenty." Bastet examined her nails with feigned indifference. "And Ares himself is level thirty-eight."

[ARES — LEVEL 38]

[GOD OF WAR (GREEK)]

[DANGER: EXTREME FOR CURRENT LEVEL]

Panic surged through Maxime. Level thirty-eight. He was level eight. Even with his new powers, even with Nyx at his side…

"We're going to die."

"Probably." Bastet shrugged. "Unless…"

"Unless what?"

Her smile turned predatory.

"Unless you use your new power." She stood, approaching again. This time Nyx stepped in physically, placing herself between them.

"Explain," Nyx ordered.

"Ares is a warrior, but he's also male." Bastet circled Nyx with liquid grace, addressing Maxime directly. "He's sensitive to Charisma, like all gods. With your new level of Incarnate Desire…" Her fingers brushed his chin. "You might be able to distract him. Unbalance him. Create an opening."

"You want me to seduce him?" The idea was absurd.

"I want you to survive." Her expression turned serious. "Ares is not an enemy you can defeat in direct combat. Not yet. But Desire is stronger than War. Always."

Maxime looked at Nyx. She was clenching her fists, her face a mask of barely contained rage.

"I can fight him alone."

"And you will lose." Bastet didn't blink. "Ares will kill you, then he will kill Maxime. In that order."

Silence stretched, taut as a piano wire.

Finally, Maxime spoke.

"What's the plan?"

Bastet smiled.

"Simple. You go out. You draw his attention. You use your new powers to unbalance him — Aura of Fascination, Captivating Gaze, whatever works." She pointed at Nyx. "While he's distracted, she strikes. Fast. Brutal. Lethal."

"It'll never work," Nyx growled.

"It can work." Bastet crossed her arms. "Or you can stay here and wait for him to break down the doors. Your choice."

Maxime felt the Divine Codex vibrate.

[SIDE QUEST ACTIVATED: Survive Ares]

[Objective: Escape or defeat Ares and his warriors]

[Reward: XP, possible new fragment if Ares is defeated]

[Failure: Death]

He exchanged a look with Nyx through their Link. He felt her reluctance, her fear of putting him in danger, but also her rational understanding that this was their best chance.

"We do it."

Nyx closed her eyes for a moment, then nodded.

"Alright. But I cover you. Constantly."

"I wouldn't expect anything less."

Bastet guided them toward the door of golden light.

"One last piece of advice, little god." She leaned in, her mouth near his ear. "Don't restrain your power. Let Desire consume you. Let it transform you. Even if it frightens you. Especially if it frightens you."

She stepped back, her green eyes shining with unsettling intensity.

"Because the Eros I knew… the one who made pantheons tremble…" Her smile grew almost nostalgic. "He was never afraid of what he was."

Maxime inhaled deeply, feeling the fragment's energy pulse within him. Pink. Warm. Alive.

"Let's go kill a god of War."

He stepped through the door, Nyx at his side.

The light engulfed them.

When it faded, they stood at the temple entrance. The desert stretched before them, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.

And there, fifty meters away, stood Ares.

Massive, nearly three meters tall, clad in bronze armor engraved with symbols of war. His helmet concealed his face, revealing only red eyes burning like embers. A colossal sword rested on his shoulder — as large as Maxime himself.

Behind him, twelve warriors in full armor stood motionless like statues.

Ares raised his weapon, pointing it at Maxime.

"EROS." His voice was a rumble that made the sand tremble. "The Council orders you to surrender."

Maxime felt Incarnate Desire pulse within him, hot and tempting.

He smiled — that new, dangerous smile he was beginning to recognize.

"And if I refuse?"

Ares' laughter boomed like thunder.

"Then I tear your head off and bring it back to Zeus."

Maxime activated his Aura of Fascination.
